Leftovers and Holiday Eating

Thanksgiving is in the books and now it's time for all the delicious leftovers.

From turkey sandwiches, to turkey tetrazzini, to home made turkey potpies, leftover turkey recipes are one of the highlights of the Thanksgiving holiday. However, K-State Extension Wildcat District SNAP-Ed Agent Katherine Pinto says don't hold on to those leftovers too long.

The end of November also means the beginning of holiday party season. Christmas parties and New Year's Celebrations bring fun with friends and family, but they can also bring lots of food and drink. Pinto says that cutting back in some areas can help with eating healthy during this time of year.

The Center for Disease Control suggests staying active with moderate physical activity, choosing smaller portions of foods you really like at parties, and to focus on the social parts of parties instead of the food to have a healthier holiday season.

Another citizen says he takes the opposite view.

The City says Fredonia was given an opportunity, but Labette Health presented the more complete plan. Mayor Devin Johnson says, that's what happened, despite what others may say.

Currently, the agreement is under review by Labette Health. City Administrator Brogan Jones told the commission that they may have the agreement back as soon as next week.

CPD Approved for Federal ICE Program

The Coffeyville Police Department is approved to take part in a federal program through U.S. Immigration and Customs.

Police Chief Kwin Bromley and City Manager Ben Brubaker stressed that the program will not change CPD’s community-focused approach, does not involve proactive immigration sweeps, and will not affect how officers respond to calls for service. Instead, it allows CPD to legally hold individuals with existing ICE detainers and collaborate with ICE when federal immigration law intersects with local criminal investigations.

City officials emphasized that the initiative is rooted in public safety, protects due process, and maintains equal treatment for all Coffeyville residents, with a continued commitment to transparency.

Record Number of Travelers on the Road for Thanksgiving

This Thanksgiving will likely see a record number of Americans on the road and in the skies.

Triple-A predicts 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home this week. That number is 1.6 million more than last Thanksgiving and is a new overall record for travelers during the holiday season, surpassing even pre-Covid numbers. Shawn Steward with Triple-A Kansas says many of those travelers will be on the nation's highways.

Steward says those numbers mean that roads may be more congested with heavier traffic than in years past.

The good news for Kansans is that gas prices have fallen slightly to a state-wide average of $2.72 a gallon for regular unleaded.

Triple-A expects around 6 million people are expected to travel by air this week, though there may be fewer people traveling by plane this week due to the recent disruptions in air travel caused by the federal government shutdown.

Only a handful of Kansas counties do not have a county-wide sales tax and Montgomery County has only done it a limited number of times to raise funds for a specific purpose. Commissioner Robert Bever says, if the county opts for such a tax, he would like to see the funds go to the Sheriff's Office or the Road and Bridges.

Since the discussion was not an agenda item at yesterday’s meeting, no action was taken. However, commissioners said they plan to take up the issue officially in January.

Salina Restaurant Owner Wins First Amendment Battle

A Salina restaurant owner wins a federal lawsuit that will allow the business to finish painting its mural.

A federal judge has sided with Steve Howard, owner of the Cozy Inn, in his dispute with the City of Salina over a mural on the exterior wall of his restaurant. The issue began in November 2023 when Howard hired an artist to paint a mural featuring a UFO and flying hamburgers on the wall of the restaurant. A few days later, the city notified him that he would not be able to finish the mural because the City considered it a sign and not artwork. Howard filed a lawsuit against the City in 2024.

The mural has been left unfinished for the past two years as the case made its way through the courts. Now, a judge has ruled that the City cannot determine if a display is a sign or artwork based on its content.

Howard says, he is excited, at long last, to be able to finish his mural.

A Joplin dentist is sentenced for his role in a fatal hit-and-run accident.

54-year-old John H. Joseph the Second was sentenced to 12 months of probation for criminal interference in the investigation of the accident that killed 60-year-old Gary LaTurner of Galena. In August 2023, LaTurner was walking along K-66 west of Galena when he was struck and killed. Police say the driver of the vehicle was Rocco Joseph, John Joseph's son. The Cherokee County Attorney's Office state that while the Kansas Highway Patrol's investigation determined that the juvenile driver involved in the initial impact was not criminally liable for the collision itself, John Joseph's actions in the aftermath of the accident obstructed the investigative process and the driver’s duty to report, and warranted felony prosecution.

Exactly 100 more residents voted this time than during the last bond attempt at 363, with 217 voting in favor and 146 against the $1.4 million bond issue.  In order to pass, the bond needed a super majority or 60% of the vote. Despite more voting yes than no the bond fell just shy of the 60% at 59.8%. One more yes vote or one less no vote would have seen the bond passed.

Had it passed, South Coffeyville would have used the money for repairs to the roof, windows, sidewalks, brick siding and HVAC on school buildings. The money was also planned to go towards a storm shelter for the community. The official vote tally still needs to be certified by Nowata County.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office Reminds Holiday Travelers to Buckle Up

The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office is stressing the importance of seat belt use as the holiday travel season begins.

Thanksgiving is one of the busiest holidays, with that comes an increase in crashes. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office wants to remind everyone to always buckle up. Starting on Saturday and running through Thanksgiving weekend, sheriff’s deputies in Montgomery County will join law enforcement agencies across the state in emphasizing the importance of seat belts. During that time, drivers can expect to see increased law enforcement presence on local roads during the statewide Thanksgiving Safe Arrival campaign.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, buckling up is the single most effective thing you can do to protect yourself in a crash. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep you safe and secure in your vehicle.

The right fit matters:

• The shoulder belt should lay flat across the middle of the chest and away from the neck

• The lap belt should fit across the hip, not stomach

• Never put the seat belt behind the back or under the arm

• Children should be properly restrained in car seats according to weight, age and height

For more information on seat belts go to www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle-safety/seat-belts.

Oklahoma Tax Revenues Increase in October

Sale tax revenue totaled $582 million with another $85 million coming from oil and gas taxes. So far this year, Oklahoma has collected just over $17 billion for state coffers.

The Federal Reserve made its October rate cut using the latest available public and private sector data, aiming to support continued employment stability while keeping inflation in check.

Northern Lights Visible Across Four-State Area Last Night

Residents across the four-state area were treated to a rare sight in last night's sky as the aurora borealis or northern lights were visible in the northern sky.

The geomagnetic phenomenon is rarely visible this far south, but, due to a powerful burst of energy from the sun, the display could be seen as far south as Texas and Florida. The coronal mass ejections or CME's reached the Earth in what the Space Weather Prediction Center called a severe geomagnetic storm. The storms occur when the solar wind rushes through the Earth's magnetosphere, causing charged particles to interact with gases in the atmosphere. This interaction causes the northern lights that ripple across the sky in green, red, and yellow hues.

Kansas Legislators Opt Out of Special Redistricting Session

Kansas lawmakers have decided against holding a special legislative session this week for the purpose of redrawing the state's U.S. House Districts.

Kansas House Speaker Dan Hawkins made the announcement yesterday. Kansas Republicans had been considering the move in an effort to join the nation-wide movement in the battle for partisan advantage in the 2026 election. A special session would have likely targeted Kansas' 3rd Congressional District seat, currently held by Sharice Davids, the only Democrat in the state's congressional delegation.

The Kansas constitution would have allowed the Republican-controlled legislature to bypass Governor Kelly's refusal to call a special session, but the move would have required a two-thirds vote by both the State House and Senate. The special session was controversial from the beginning with State Senator Virgil Peck stating that he had received lots of feedback both for and against the move.

However, yesterday's announcement doesn't necessarily mean the measure is dead. State Republicans would still have time to schedule a special session before the Legislature convenes for its regular session on January 12.

Voting Continues in Cherryvale Despite Ballot Error

Voting continues in Cherryvale despite an error on the ballot.

Montgomery County Clerk Ami Standridge says a candidate filed paperwork for an office in a ward different from the one in which they live in. She says the filing was accepted in good faith during the filing period, as election officials rely solely on the documents and fees submitted by candidates.

Standridge says the candidate met statutory requirements, including payment of the filing fee and completion of a declaration of intent. Under Kansas law, once a name has been certified and printed on the ballot, the county clerk does not have the authority to remove or alter it, even in cases involving filing errors. The legal impact of the mistake is now under review.

Norman Johnson appears on the ballot for Cherryvale Ward 1, but does not live in that ward and Ward 2 has no one on the ballot, which is also incorrect. A Cherryvale citizen says they reached out to Standridge when the sample ballots came out notifying her of the error.

The full letter from Standridge can be seen below.

City of Nowata Approves Sewer Ordinance Amendment

City Commissioners in Nowata approve changes to an ordinance involving new sewers and connections.

The change adds a requirement for backwater device connections to stop the reverse flow of water in pipes in order to avoid contamination. City Attorney John Heskett says it's an important change.

Commissioners also heard reports from various department heads including police and fire, animal control, the treasurer and code enforcement officer.

The Nowata City Commissioners will meet again on December 1 at the Nowata Fire Department. The public is invited to attend.

Caney Releases Funds For Water Connection to Coffeyville

The city of Caney is one step closer to seeing shovels in the ground after approving the release of funding for the 14 mile pipeline project from their elevated water storage facility to the city of Coffeyville.

During last night's meeting, City Administrator Andrea Sibley reported to the council that authorization has been received to release the one million dollars of funds received in a CDBG grant earlier this year. Mayor Josh Elliott says every dollar in grant funding is vital in a project of this magnitude.

In other business, the council approved the purchase of 18 sets of dual purpose PPE to replace gear at the end of its life. Grant funding will pay for eleven of those sets, with the rest covered by ARPA funds. The council also cleared up discrepancies between housing ordinances and RV parks / short term living situations inside the city limits.

KDOT to Replace Bridge in Crawford County

The Kansas Department of Transportation will begin a bridge replacement project this month in Crawford County.

The new bridge will be 26 feet long, 26 feet wide and will feature 12-foot driving lanes. Funding for the project comes through KDOT's Off-System Bridge Program and the Kansas Local Bridge Improvement Program. The programs target improvements to city and county bridges not on the state highway system and in need of replacement and repair.

The project is expected to be completed in early spring.

Wann Man Sentenced in UTV Death

On July 15, 2023, Thornton was driving northbound in the southbound lane on County Road 4010 north of County Road 700 in Washington County, when he collided with a UTV, killing 58-year-old Shelly Beaston. A toxicology report from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, showed Thornton’s Blood Alcohol Content at 0.117.

Two Injured in Independence Crash

Two people are injured in a crash just south of Independence.

The accident occurred around 3pm yesterday at the intersection of South 10th Street and County Road 4000, just east of ICC. A 2007 Toyota Tundra drivern by 66-year-old Patrick Wilson of Liberty had stopped at the stop sign at the intersection. He pulled onto 10th Street and collided with a southbound Hyundai Azera driven by 23-year-old Parker Banzet of Coffeyville. Banzet and a minor child both sustained minor injuries and were taken to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center for treatment.

No one else was injured in the crash.

October Tax Revenues for Kansas Above Estimate

October tax revenues for the State of Kansas are once again above estimates.

Total tax collections for the state in October were $695.6 million or 7.2% above estimates. Revenue was also up 4% from this time last year. Most of the rise was driven by individual income tax collections, which were nearly 23% above estimates. Combined retail sales and compensating use tax receipts were also up sllightly at $289.5 million, while corporate income taxes fell to $15.9 million or 60% below estimates.

Governor Laura Kelly noted that the drop in corporate tax receipts was concerning, stating that fiscal responsibility would be her primary concern as she begins crafting her Fiscal Year 2027 budget proposal.

Montgomery County to Take Action Against Oil & Gas Companies on Delinquent Taxes

Montgomery County considers options on taking action against companies with outstanding tax debt on oil and gas wells.

At Monday’s County Commission meeting. County Treasurer Mandi Hargis and County Appraiser Melody Kikkert answered questions from commissioners as to what action could be taken to force companies to pay their tax debt. Hargis says one move would be to involve the Kansas Corporation Commission.

According to Hargis, one Bartlesville-based company Gateway Resources owes more than $590,000 going back to 2017. Commissioner Robert Bever suggested the county might put pressure on landowners and says it’s an issue of fairness.

Commissioner Phil Clubine adds that the county should focus on the companies and not the land owners.

The commission approved sending a letter to companies with outstanding debt, notifying them that they had 45 days to pay in full before more aggressive collection efforts begin.

Cherryvale Passes Several New Ordinances: Animals, Generators, RVs

Several ordinances are passed at this week's Cherryvale City Council Meeting.

The first adjusts the wording of the existing animal control ordinance to deal with nuisance offenders. Code Enforcement and Animal Control Officer Nicole Ecret says this will impact those who have multiple violations.

Ecret says something has to change to decrease the number of animals at large.

The Council also approved an ordinance regarding the temporary use of generators, limiting the time they can be on to line up with the current noise ordinance in the city, which is between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. An ordinance on RVs was also passed that requires them to be parked on a driveway and not in a front or side yard. RVs must be parked perpendicular to the street without blocking the sidewalk. RVs can be temporarily parked for up to 72 hours for loading, although unattached trailers can't be left on a city street for more than 24 hours. The Council also discussed a proposed nudity ordinance at length, but decided to table the matter until the next meeting.

Dewey Woman Facing Charges for Eluding Police

A Dewey woman is facing felony charges after allegedly fleeing from police.

37-year-old Shasta Blevins was charged with endangering others while eluding police and driving with an improper tag. According to the Bartlesville Police Department, authorities attempted to stop Blevins due to a tinted license plate cover. Blevins had both front windows rolled down and failed to yield to authorities.

According to BPD, she drove through spike strips and failed to yield at multiple intersections, nearly resulting in a collision. Blevins finally pulled over near Adams Boulevard and Elm Avenue. She will appear in court again on November 21st at 9:00am and her bond is set at $25,000.

Osage County Annex Construction Sees Minor Setback

Osage County Commissioners receive news about a minor setback to the construction of the annex building.

The State Fire Marshal's Office conducted tests at the annex building and those tests didn't go according to plan. Contractor Dalton Higgins says they are working to remedy the problem.  There were a few other minor issues that have been taken care of.

Higgins says the biggest challenge now is getting back on the list for the state fire marshal to come back out.  This setback shouldn't delay work on phase one of the courthouse project.
