Northern Lights Visible Across Four-State Area Last Night

Residents across the four-state area were treated to a rare sight in last night's sky as the aurora borealis or northern lights were visible in the northern sky.

The geomagnetic phenomenon is rarely visible this far south, but, due to a powerful burst of energy from the sun, the display could be seen as far south as Texas and Florida. The coronal mass ejections or CME's reached the Earth in what the Space Weather Prediction Center called a severe geomagnetic storm. The storms occur when the solar wind rushes through the Earth's magnetosphere, causing charged particles to interact with gases in the atmosphere. This interaction causes the northern lights that ripple across the sky in green, red, and yellow hues.
