The Kansas Attorney General's Office files charges of election fraud against a western Kansas mayor.
State Attorney General Kris Kobach's Office says the mayor of Coldwater Jose Ceballos has voted in multiple elections and is not a U.S. citizen. His office alleges that the 54-year-old Ceballos is a legal resident of the U.S. but is actually a citizen of Mexico. Ceballos was re-elected as Mayor of Coldwater on Tuesday.
Three charges of voting without being qualified and three counts of election perjury were filed against Ceballos yesterday in Comanche County. The charges are non-person felonies and a conviction could result in up to five years in prison. The case is being prosecuted by First Assistant Attorney General Stacy Edwards.
It will be up to the Coldwater City Attorney to decide whether Ceballos is eligible to continue his role as mayor.
