MG Co Commission Discusses County-Wide Sales Tax

The Montgomery County commission has a discussion on a county-wide sales tax during the public comment portion of this week’s meeting.

A resident from the southern part of the county asked Montgomery County Commissioners if they were planning any action on a county sales tax. Commissioners stated there had been some discussion on the matter. Commission Chair Mike Cordray says they want to proceed cautiously on the issue.

County Administrator Jonathan Booe says the county must take care to balance financial needs with those of taxpayers.

Only a handful of Kansas counties do not have a county-wide sales tax and Montgomery County has only done it a limited number of times to raise funds for a specific purpose. Commissioner Robert Bever says, if the county opts for such a tax, he would like to see the funds go to the Sheriff's Office or the Road and Bridges.

Since the discussion was not an agenda item at yesterday’s meeting, no action was taken. However, commissioners said they plan to take up the issue officially in January.
