For the second time in program history, the Independence High School Marching Band has been crowned the best small school band in the state of Kansas.
The Bulldogs competed with dozens of other bands from around the state in Topeka. Band Director Erin Shelton says a large number of schools qualify to compete for the championship.
IHS swept the Kansas Bands Association small school championships, winning awards for music, visuals, general effect, color guard, drumline, and front ensemble. Shelton says it takes a community effort to accomplish a season like this one.
Section leaders and drum majors for the championship IHS Marching Band were present at the November school board meeting of USD 446, receiving recognition from the board and the community.
