Resident and Pet Escape Columbus House Fire

A resident and a dog escape uninjured from a Columbus house fire.

The fire occurred just before 2am yesterday morning. Crews from Columbus Fire-Rescue, along with Baxter Springs, Scammon, and Lola Fire Departments responded to the scene on East Sycamore Street to find a home fully engulfed in flames. Authorities say there was very heavy smoke coming from the home and flames were visible coming from the structure's roof. Fire crews remained on the scene for nearly three hours until the blaze was completely out. A preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire was a wood stove in the garage.

The residence was a total loss, but no injuries were reported.
