This Saturday is opening day for quail and pheasant hunting in Kansas and Oklahoma, and populations may be on the increase.
According to the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the Flint Hills has maintained good regional densities of bobwhites this year. The area around Coffey County may provide some quality quail hunting opportunities, although the bulk of southeast Kansas is expected to remain poor.
Surveys in northeast Oklahoma look a little more promising after several down years, with roadside surveys showing an increase in long-term averages, with the highest numbers in almost 10 years.
Hunters in Oklahoma are allowed 10 quail per day and 8 per day in Kansas.
