Erie faces Jayhawk Linn tomorrow in the first game  of the Kenny Holt Memorial Tournament in Uniontown.

Chiefs Advance to AFC Championship Game

The Kansas City Chiefs will play for the AFC Championship for the seventh consecutive season.

The team defeated the Houston Texans in the Divisional round 23-14, and advance to the AFC title game where they will face Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills.

Kansas City sacked CJ Stroud eight times in the win, and Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce for a pair of touchdowns.

This is a rematch of last year's divisional round game, and is the fourth time the Bills and Chiefs will play in the playoffs since 2021. With a win, Kansas City would break a record for the furthest a team seeking three straight Super Bowls has advanced in the playoffs.

Ravens Split with Cougars in Great Bend

Coffeyville had mixed feelings after a Saturday doubleheader in Great Bend.

The Lady Ravens were able to overcome a nine point halftime deficit to beat the Barton Cougars in overtime, 71-69. Aubrey Hishaw had the game winning score with five seconds left.

Head Coach Tony Turner says the team did a great job of sticking together.

CCC improves to 14-3, with a 9-3 league record, and are two games back of first place. Despite big wins over Dodge and Barton, and four upcoming home games, Turner says the team can't take their foot off the gas.

The men struggled with turnovers, committing 23 in a 75-64 loss to Barton. Assistant Coach Jordan Bailey says Barton is one of the toughest teams they've seen so far.

Trent Ruth scored 19 points, but the duo of Brian Griffith and Justin Taylor combined for just five points. The men fall to 14-4, and are 10-2 in league play, one game behind Cowley for first place. Ruth says he's confident the team will bounce back quickly.

The Ravens have four of their next five games at home, beginning with a Thursday night doubleheader with Fort Hays Tech.

Nado Hold off Tigers in OT

Field Kindley boys basketball gets back over .500 in league play with an overtime win against Fort Scott 48-47.

Fort Scott would grab the momentum in the second half, led by 12 points from Kanin Brown, out-scoring the Nado 15-10 in the third and 14-9 in the fourth. Fort Scott would tie the game up with 42 seconds and ultimately force overtime. Fort Scott's Kyle Anderson would hit a three to start overtime giving the Tigers the 47-44 lead their first since the opening quarter. An Aaron Tunstall layup would bring the Nado back to within one and then with 5.5 seconds left Carter Herring would put the Nado back on top.

Coffeyville is now 6-3 on the season and 3-2 in league play. They open the Ralph Miller Classic with a rematch against Chanute on Thursday at 6:30pm on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

Seven is the Lucky Number as Lady Nado Keep Win Streak Alive

Field Kindley girls basketball makes it seven in a row knocking off the number seven team in 4A with a 48-41 victory over Fort Scott.

A matchup everyone had circled this week as two teams competing for an SEK League title and were undefeated in league play squared off. The game lived up to its expectations as the first half was back and forth with Coffeyville up 12-10 after the first quarter and 19-16 at the half.

Fort Scott found themselves in the lead about halfway through the third quarter 26-25, when Kaylin Caron would hit a three sparking a Coffeyville run. The Lady Nado would extend their lead to a game high 12 points. Coffeyville would go cold in the fourth quarter offensively missing their last fifteen shots, but good defense and clutch free throws would keep them in the lead and helped secure the victory. Kaylin finished with a game high 17. Taiylor Caron added 11 points and Erin Lopez finished with 8. Brooklyn White added 7 points and over 20 rebounds.

The Lady Nado have now won seven in a row to improve to 7-2 on the season and 5-0 in league play. This time around, Houston brings quarterback CJ Stroud, along with weapons Joe Mixon and Nico Collins, to attempt to spoil the 15-2 regular season of KC.

Kansas City will be starting Joe Thuney at left tackle for the game, a traditional guard who moved outside to help with the struggles at the position.

The men's matchup is a pair of top 15 teams in the nation, with the Red Ravens ranked No. 12 and Barton No. 13. The Cougars are the reigning national champions, and return key players such as Brent Moss and Keandre Kindell.

Head Coach Jay Herkelman says despite losing many players from the championship team, Barton is still one of the league's best.

The 4th quarter saw its share of lead changes, but the biggest shot of the night came from Braydon Messner, who knocked down a huge three-pointer as time wound down in the 4th. As all first year coaches do, Peitz is leaning on upperclassmen leadership to help smooth the transition to a new coach. The Blue Streaks have two talented seniors in Krewe Johnson and Rylan Allen, and Peitz says, they've been crucial to the team's growth.

Neodesha wrapped up a game with Columbus last night, and will have games against Cherryvale, Caney, and Fredonia in the next three weeks.

Head Coach Dee Barnett says since then, the team has really started to turn the corner.

Not only do the Yellow Jackets feature one of the most talented rosters in the area, but also one of the most experienced, with plenty of players who have spent major time at the varsity level. Barnett says it's a true luxury to have a group that is ready for nearly every scenario.

Fredonia had their two games this week canceled due to weather, and will return to the court for the first time in 2025 when they battle Humboldt on Tuesday night.

Kelce Lashes Out Over Tank Accusations

There has been speculation that the Kansas City Chiefs intentionally threw the regular season finale against the Broncos, but one player is having none of it.

Some fans and writers around the league have raised the question if Kansas City rested starters across the roster in order to ensure that the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals wouldn't have a path to the final playoff spot. Key players were expected to sit with the top seed locked up, but Kansas City played reserves and inexperienced guys at nearly every spot.

Tight end Travis Kelce says, however, that the speculation is completely ridiculous.

The Chiefs had nothing to play for in the game against Denver on Sunday, but ESPN's Chris Russo says the team put on an embarrasing performance regardless.

Kansas City is on a bye this week, and will await their Divisional Round opponent next weekend at Arrowhead Stadium.

Lorenzen Comments on Return to Royals

The Kansas City Royals made an addition to their starting rotation earlier this week, agreeing to a one-year deal with right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen.

The deal is worth a guaranteed $7 million, with a mutual option for the 2026 season at $12 million.

Lorenzen says this was an opportunity that he couldn't pass up on.

Lorenzen was acquired at the trade deadline last season, and had an earned run average of 1.57 for Kansas City, emerging as one of their most consistent arms in the playoff push. General Manager JJ Picollo says this was a priority for the organization.

Lorenzen will prepare for the 2025 season as a starting pitcher, but also has plenty of bullpen experience if the team needs change moving forward.

Iola Senior Among Leading Scorers in State

One of the best scorers in the state of Kansas has been leading the Iola Mustangs to success in his senior season.

Guard Corland Carson has lived up to the lofty expectations set in the preseason, when he was named as a Preseason Player to Watch by Sports in Kansas. Carson is averaging 25.5 points per game through the first six games of the season, and has kept the Mustangs competitive with a 3-3 record.

Carson scored a season-high 38 points against Osage City earlier in the season, which is one of the highest single game scoring outputs by any high school player in Kansas this season. In his junior year, Cortland averaged 18.3 points per game and was named second-team All-State by Sports in Kansas.

Carson and the Mustangs had their first scheduled game of 2025 postponed due to weather, and will be back on the court tomorrow night against Osawatomie.

Wildcats Searching for Answers

The Kansas State Wildcats have dropped two consecutive conference games, and are sitting at .500 on the season.

Following a win in the Big 12 opener against Cincinnati, the team has come up short in back-to-back road games against TCU and Oklahoma State. Head Coach Jerome Tang says the team has struggled with giveaways.

KSU has had struggles with consistency in numerous areas of the floor, including 3-point shooting, rebounding, and overall defensive intensity. The team is also still searching for a player to emerge as a top option, with flashes from players like Coleman Hawkins, David N'Guessan, and Brendan Hausen, but no stability from a game to game basis.

Tang says despite this, he's not hitting the panic button yet.

The Wildcats return to Manhattan this weekend to host the Houston Cougars, who enter the matchup winners of seven consecutive games. Coverage begins at 4 p.m. Saturday on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

Assistant Coach Zariah Sango says the team's depth was on full display in the win.

Norika Welch led the team with 20 points, while Kailyn Willis had nine off the bench as well.

Sango says Welch has all the ability to be a special player for this team.

The men have won eight of their past nine, beating Pratt 81-63. The team used a strong second half to open up a large lead and earn their 12th win of the season.

Assistant Coach Jordan Bailey says the team did a great job of staying patient.

Justin Taylor had a team high 14 points while Brian Griffith finished with 13 as well.

The Ravens will travel to Liberal this weekend for a doubleheader matchup with the Seward County Saints on Saturday afternoon. Bailey says it will take a full team effort to come back to Coffeyville with a win.

Coverage of Saturday's games begin at 1:45 p.m. CT on US 98.

Nado Fall to Indy in Second One Point Loss of Season

Field Kindley boys basketball falls to rival Independence 49-48.

The Nado got out to a strong start leading 10-8 after the first quarter and 23-21 at the half. Despite the first half lead, Coffeyville lost some of their momentum heading into the half when Javen Colbert hit a deep three to cut the lead to two at the break.

The Nado would go cold to start the second half being outscored 19-6 in the third quarter. Coffeyville would wake up a bit in the fourth but just ran out of time. The Nado outscored Indy in the fourth 19-9 and had chance to tie the game at the free throw line with one second left but fell just short.

Coffeyville takes on Parsons on Friday and both teams are 4-2.

Experienced Neodesha Girls Team Off to Strong Start

Wilson County boasts one of the most exciting high school basketball teams in the area, with the Neodesha Blue Streaks girls basketball team off to a 6-1 start to the season.

The team cruised to a convincing home win over Sedan in their first game of 2025, and also have early season wins over Humboldt, Olpe, and Fredonia. Head Coach Justin Pierce says the group does a great job of making it fun for everyone.

One of the many seniors that leads the group is Prayer Roebuck, who is committed to play college volleyball at Division 2 William Jewell in Kansas City, and is closing in on 1,500 career points on the basketball court. She says this senior class has nearly a decade's worth of chemistry on the court.

The team's lone loss this season was a narrow defeat to the Eureka Tornadoes in the Wildcat Classic Championship game. Eureka has dominated the conference over the past decade, and Pierce says this team's ultimate goal is to finally flip the script.

Neodesha will be tested in a tough conference matchup on Friday night, when they travel to take on the Cherryvale Chargers.

Lady Nado Start League Play 2-0 for First Time in Over 20 Years

Field Kindley girls basketball starts league play 2-0 for first time in over 20 seasons. The Lady Nado beat county rival Independence 48-45 in their first game of the new year.

Both teams got out to fast starts shooting over 40% in the first half. Indy led after the first quarter 14-13, but Coffeyville would lead at the half 27-26. Things slowed down in the second half with both teams struggling to find a rhythm offensively. Despite the scoring struggles, the Lady Nado would extend their lead to three outscoring the Bulldogs 8-6 in the quarter.

Independence was able to get the lead down to one with just under four minutes to play. Senior Taiylor Caron would hit two free throws to push it back to a three point lead and the Lady Nado were able to close it out from there.

Coffeyville improves to 4-2 on the season winning four straight. They face 0-6 Parsons on the road on Friday at 6:00pm on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

Neodesha Races Past Sedan in Game of Week

Neodesha started the 2025 portion of their season strong, racing to an 83-58 win over Sedan in the KGGF High School Basketball Game of the Week.

The game started with a back and forth opening quarter, before a late six point swing had the Blue Streaks up nine after one. Senior point guard Krewe Johnson took over in the second quarter, scoring 15 points and leading Neodesha to a 37 point quarter.

Sedan wouldn't go down without a fight, as senior Brycen Dickens had 15 points in the second half, and Jackson Dowell contributed 11 points as well. However, the duo of Johnson and senior Rylen Allen proved to be too much, as the two seniors combined for 41 points in the victory.

Neodesha has won three of their last four games, while Sedan will look to bounce back after losses to Caney and Neodesha. The KGGF High School Game of the Week will be at Fredonia on Friday night, when the Yellow Jackets host the Eureka Tornadoes.

The Caney Valley Bullpups sweep the Nowata Ironmen in high school basketball acrtion last night in Caney; the boys won 64-54 and the girls took home a 68-26 victory.

Elyn Washburn led the Lady Pups with 17 points and Sarah Martinez added 14. Molleigh Kaminska had another solid performace with ten points and ten rebounds. The Lady Pups had eighteen steals on the night which led to some easy transition baskets. They improve to 5-0 on the season.

Ravens Return Home to Battle Pratt

The Red Ravens are back at Nellis Hall for the first time in 2025, when they welcome the Pratt Beavers to town tomorrow night.

The Lady Ravens are looking to get back in the win column, after a narrow defeat to rival Butler. Head Coach Tony Turner says the team needs to slow it down offensively.

Pratt is led by first year coach Christopher Jefferson, who served as an assistant last season. Turner says it can be difficult to scout a team like this.

On the men's side, the Ravens look to carry momentum from a massive ranked win over the Grizzlies into the friendly confines, when they welcome a Pratt team that has climbed into the Top 6 in the conference. Head Coach Jay Herkelman says Pratt is a tough team playing extremely well right now.

The Beavers feature a backcourt that can score as much as anyone in the conference. Herkelman says he's hoping the team's second unit can step up and be the difference.

Coverage of Coffeyville and Pratt begins tomorrow night at 5 p.m. CT on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.

Lorenzen Signs One Year Deal with Royals

The Royals have made their second starting rotation signing of the offseason, agreeing to terms with a familiar face.

Right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen has agreed to a one year deal with Kansas City, worth $7 million guaranteed, and including a mutual option for the 2026 season.

Lorenzen was traded to the Royals at the trade deadline of the 2024 season, and was very effective in his time with the club. He pitched in just over 28 innings, with a strong 1.57 earend run average.

MLB Network's Yonder Alonso says this is a valuable addition for the ball club.

Lorenzen has the capability to pitch in both the starting rotation or out of the bullpen. He will be tasked with helping fill the spot that was left when the team traded Brady Singer to the Cincinnati Reds last month.

Former Chief Tyreek Hill Publicly Requests Out of Miami

A frustrating season for the Miami Dolphins, which featured inconsistency, injuries, and barely missing the playoffs, received even more difficult news following their season finale.

Former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill was noticeably upset after the team's Week 18 loss to the New York Jets. Hill had one of the worst seasons of his career, finishing with less than 1,000 yards for the first time since the 2019 season.

A large part of the struggles stemmed from the injuries to both Tua Tagovailoa and former Kansas State quarterback Skyler Thompson. The Dolphins displayed a revolving door at the quarterback position for much of the season, resulting in a disappointing 8-9 finish.

Hill spoke to the media following the game, and made it clear he wants out of Miami.

Tyreek Hill is 30 years old, and still finished the season in the Top 25 in the league in both catches and receiving yards. In his career, he has 796 catches for more than 11,000 yards and 82 touchdowns.

Red Ravens Beat #5 Butler in Doubleheader Split

The Red Raven men's basketball team earned their biggest win of the season on Saturday, beating #5 Butler on the road 70-61 in a doubleheader split.

Coffeyville opened the game leading by six, but quickly found themselves down 10 following a 16-0 run by the Grizzlies. The Ravens were able to earn a two-point lead at the half, thanks to key scores by Justin Taylor, Rashid Kuta, and Brian Griffith.

Assistant Coach Jordan Bailey says this is the perfect way to start the 2025 portion of the season.

The second half was a back and forth affair, with both teams trading scores and defensive stops on an afternoon that saw 10 ties and eight lead changes. With the game tied at 51 with six minutes left, Coffeyville went on a massive 9-0 to seize the lead for good.

Bailey says the team was able to play their best when it mattered most.

Taylor had 18 to lead the Ravens, who improve to 11-3 on the year, and 7-1 in conference play. CCC sits second in the KJCCC, a half game behind first place Cowley.

The Lady Ravens fell in the opener 52-48, and dropped to 10-3 on the season. Coffeyville faced multiple double digit deficits throughout the course of the game, and couldn't quite come all the way back. Karys Washington had a great day, finishing with 11 points, 13 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks.

Head Coach Tony Turner says they'll be working on more consistency offensively.

The Ravens return to Nellis Hall on Wednesday night, welcoming the Pratt Beavers to town.

Chiefs Fall to Broncos, Look Ahead to Playoffs

The Kansas City Chiefs opted to rest a majority of their starters in the regular season finale, resulting in a 38-0 drubbing at the hands of the Denver Broncos.

Denver outgained Kansas City 479-98, including 158 yards rushing. The Bronco defense also held the Chiefs to just five first downs on the afternoon.

Kansas City arrived to Denver late due to the winter weather in the Kansas City area, which resulted in the airport being shut down for multiple hours on Saturday.

Head Coach Andy Reid says despite the tough day, there were positives to take away.

The Chiefs finish the regular season 15-2, and the top seed in the AFC. They will await their Divisional Round opponent, which could be the Houston Texans, Los Angeles Chargers, Pittsburgh Steelers, or Denver Broncos, depending on the Wild Card games.

Former CCC, KState Coach to National College Basketball Hall of Fame

A coaching legend that experienced great success at both Coffeyville Community College and Kansas State University is one of the eight inductees to the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

Jack Hartman is the lone coach in the induction class of 2024, and is the sixth person affiliated with Kansas State to be inducted.

Hartman spent eight seasons as head coach at CCC from 1955-62, winning the NJCAA national championship in 1962 with a perfect 32-0 season. He also spent 16 seasons at Kansas State, and is the school's all time winningest coach, winning 295 games, three Big Eight titles, and nine postseason appearances.

Red Raven Coach Jay Herkelman says this is a special honor for the school and community.

Hartman has had an impact on numerous basketball legends in his career, working with Walt Frazier at Southern Illinois, and Rolando Blackman, Ed Nealy, and Lon Kruger at KSU, among others.

He was a native of Dewey, Oklahoma, and was a two-sport star at Oklahoma State, including a brief professional football career in the Canadien Football League. Hartman passed away in 1998 at the age of 73.

Royals Predicted to Win Division in 2025, Ragans Projected Cy Young

There are big expectations for the Kansas City Royals in 2025, and some writers believe they will reach the top of the division next season.

Kansas City is projected to win the AL Central Division title in 2025, in a collaborative article released by national reporters and writers for each of the 30 MLB teams. The boys in blue finished in a tie for second in the division last season, but went 33-19 in division play, which was better than both the Detroit Tigers and Cleveland Guardians, the team's top competitors.

Additionally, all-star pitcher Cole Ragans has been picked as the early favorite for the American League Cy Young award, in a story from MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince. Ragans had a 3.14 ERA in 186 innings last season, with strikeout numbers than ranked at the top of baseball. He finished fourth in Cy Young voting last season, and is entering the prime of his career at 27 years old.

Kansas City reports to spring training next month with a return to the playoffs on the mind.

Ravens Travel to Butler to Battle Grizzlies

The Red Ravens take the basketball court for the first time in 2025, traveling to El Dorado for a matchup with the Butler Grizzlies.

Both matchups loom large in the landscape of the conference, with the Butler and CCC women's teams tied for third place in the league, while the Butler men's team holds a one game lead over Coffeyville for second place.

Lady Raven Coach Tony Turner says this is a huge matchup for both teams.

Butler and Coffeyville have been one of the conference's best rivalries for many years, and that includes in the coach's seat. Turner says Butler Coach Mike Helmer is one of the best in the business.

The Butler men are led by first year head coach Eric Nitsche, who has the team off to a 12-1 start and ranked No. 5 in the nation. Head Coach Jay Herkelman says Nitsche has done a fantastic job so far.

Butler has plenty of talent at both the guard spots, and with their interior defense down low. Herkelman says, however, one thing that's different this time around is the crowd at the Power Plant.

Coverage of Coffeyville and Butler begins tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. with tip of the first game at 2 on US 98.

Wentz to Start at Quarterback for Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs will be sending out a new quarterback this weekend.

Carson Wentz will get the start for Kansas City when they close the regular season against the Denver Broncos. Patrick Mahomes, along with numerous starters on each side of the ball, will be rested for the playoffs with the top seed in the AFC already clinched.

Wentz says he's preparing for this game just like any other.

Denver needs a win to clinch a playoff spot, while Miami and Cincinnati could sneak into the playoffs if Kansas City were to win. The Broncos are currently two-score favorites for the game Sunday afternoon.

Longhorns, Buckeyes Advance to CFP Semifinals

The college football playoff quarterfinals are nearly complete, with two more teams punching their tickets to the semifinals.

The Texas Longhorns defeated the Arizona State Sun Devils 39-31 in double overtime in the Peach Bowl. Texas held a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter before ASU stormed back, but the Longhorns made enough plays late to hang on.

Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian says it's a testiment to the team's toughness.

Arizona State was Big 12 champions after being picked to finish in last place in the preseason rankings. Head Coach Kenny Dillingham says he's proud of the team's journey to this moment.

In the Rose Bowl, Ohio State got revenge on the Oregon Ducks, racing to a 41-21 victory. OSU led 34-0 late in the first half, and got big play touchdowns from Jeremiah Smith and TreVeyon Henderson, and 319 yards passing from former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard.

Head Coach Ryan Day says they are one of the nation's best when they're clicking.

It is the first loss of the season for Oregon, who began 13-0 and were champions of the Big Ten conference. Head Coach Dan Lanning says they struggled to slow down the Buckeyes.

Ohio State and Texas will play in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas next Friday, while Penn State awaits the winner of Georgia and Notre Dame.
