Tylor Perry Signed by Toronto Raptors

A former Red Raven national champion is headed to the NBA.

Point guard Tylor Perry has signed with the Toronto Raptors to begin his professional career. Perry is an undrafted free agent, and agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract, with an invitation to the Summer League in Las Vegas.

Red Raven head coach Jay Herkelman says he's excited for Perry and the opportunity he has.

Perry spent two seasons in Coffeyville where he quickly became a program name, helping lead the Ravens to a national championship, the first in Herkelman's career.

Perry would then transfer to North Texas where he would win Sun Belt player of the year and lead the Mean Green to the NIT championship in 2023. He spent his final season at Kansas State with Jerome Tang, serving as valuable senior leadership for an inexperienced Wildcat roster.

Herkelman says Perry has always stayed true to his upbringing no matter where he's been.

Perry becomes the latest Raven to have a professional career, and will have plenty of eyes on him this summer when he suits up for the first time.

Miller was the 5A state champion in both the 800m and 1600m, and finished second in the state in the 3200m. Ryin also helped the Vikings to a fourth place finish as a team in the state championship.

The movie, Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story, will begin production next month, and will be filmed entirely in Kansas City, with certain scenes in Arrowhead Stadium, the first time a movie has ever been filmed in the venue.

The premise of the movie is based on a Chiefs super fan aiming to win the team's Fan of the Year contest, and developing romantic involvement with the team's fan engagement director.

Summer classes come to a close this week at Coffeyville Community College, and with that, the end of summer practices for Lady Raven basketball.

Approximately half of the roster has been on campus this month, participating in workouts and light practices in order to get to know new teammates.

Head coach Tony Turner says the group has made a strong first impression.

One of the key returners for this year's team is sophomore Alexis Parker. Already having been voted a captain of the team, Parker says she hopes to improve the team's overall communication.

The Lady Ravens have had to replace many departing sophomores from last year's team, resulting in plenty of new faces. Turner says the goal was to find players that fit in with the Raven way.

The Lady Ravens will move back to campus in August, and begin official fall practice on August 16th.

Independence Community College women's basketball is aiming to build off a successful season.

Beckmann says he has changed a few things with the play style since becoming the head coach.

The Lady Pirates were one of nine teams in the conference to finish with a winning overall record, in a conference that includes the national champions, and four nationally ranked teams.

A former Kansas high school star is on top of the college baseball world.

Outfielder Dylan Dreiling was named the Most Outstanding Player of the College World Series, helping lead Tennessee to their first national championship in program history. Dreiling hit a clutch home run late in Game 3, that gave the Volunteers just enough breathing room to survive.

Dreiling led Tennessee in hits and runs batted in over the course of the tournament, and becomes the first player ever to hit a home run in all three games of the championship series. Dreiling says this team was destined to reach the top from the start.

Dreiling is from Hays, Kansas, and was the 5A state player of the year in 2022. He is the first Kansan to win the CWS MVP since Greg Brummett in 1989, when Wichita State won the national championship.

Now a national name after his sophomore season, Dreiling will be one of the top hitters in the nation in 2025.

A Kansas kid saves the College World Series for Tennessee.

The Volunteers were already down a game in the Best of 3 Championship Series with Texas A&M, and trailed 1-0 in the 7th inning of Game 2. When the chances of a national championship seemed grim, outfielder Dylan Dreiling delivered a game-winning 2-run home run to give Tennessee the win.

Dreiling is from Hays, Kansas, and has been one of the most productive hitters in the Volunteers lineup this season. The sophomore is hitting .336 on the year, with 22 home runs and 72 runs batted in. He leads the team in both batting average and RBIs during the College World Series.

Chiefs Safety to Serve as Kickoff Specialist

New kickoff rules are coming to the NFL this season, and the Kansas City Chiefs are planning a major move to adapt to them.

Safety Justin Reid is planning to be the kickoff specialist for the team, leaving Harrison Butker as the kicker for field goals and extra points. The new rules are expected to increase both the number of returns, and the likelihood of return touchdowns, making an extra tackler on special teams crucial.

Reid says there are many differences to how the ball will be kicked this year.

Reid has also been a key piece of the KC defense, being a leader on the unit that's won consecutive Super Bowls. He says the team has their eyes set on the three peat.

Training camp for the team begins at the end of July, with the preseason beginning in August.

Jayhawk Alumni Team to Feature Legendary Player

The popular TBT Basketball Tournament, which features alumni teams of numerous schools across the country, begins this weekend with the winner taking home $1 million.

Mason is an undisputed legend in Lawrence, winning the 2017 National Player of the Year. He says he's excited to play in front of the Jayhawk fans.

Mason began his professional career in the NBA, but has spent the past two seasons overseas. He says he's grown a lot as a player since his time as a Jayhawk.

The TBT Tournament features many unique aspects, with the major one being the Elam Ending, which ensures every game ends with a game-winning shot. Mason says he's eager for the opportunity to hit the winner.

The Jayhawk team will be playing in the Wichita Region of the tournament, with the first game tomorrow afternoon.

Royals Reliever to Miss Time

The Kansas City Royals will be without a relief pitcher for a couple weeks.

Altavilla has made five appearances for the Royals this season, including serving as an opener for a game against the New York Yankees. He also made headlines over the weekend after hitting Dodgers star Mookie Betts on the hand, which resulted in a fractured wrist.

Kansas City called up right-hander Stevel Cruz in a corresponding move. Cruz is 25 years old, and has a 4.97 ERA in 10 games pitched in the majors this season.

Another returner from last year's roster is center Charles Caparaso. Caparaso became a key part of the rotation in the second half of the season, and he says building a routine helped him find a groove.

Like every freshman in college athletics, Griffith had highs and lows throughout his first season with the Ravens. He says a lesson he's learned is to not dwell on mistakes.

CCC will look to sophomore leadership to lead the incoming freshmen and transfers. Caparaso says he has a great relationship with the entire coaching staff.

The Ravens will continue practicing until the end of the month, and will move onto campus full time in early August.

Kapales recently played professionally in Montenegro, following playing Division 1 volleyball at both St. Peter's and Gardner Webb. She says she has learned numerous techniques she hopes to bring to Labette.

This is the first coaching job for Kapales, who takes the role new Red Raven volleyball coach Kandi Midgett served in for two years. Kapales says she hopes her legacy is one of passion for players.

Many junior college athletes are focused on earning the opportunity to continue their career at the 4-year level. Lehocky says JUCO athletes have a unique hunger and desire to win.

The Pirates, like other teams around the area, are home for summer until late July. Lehocky says she's having her players stay off the court this summer.

ICC participated in a number of scrimmages this spring, and will have approximately three weeks in August to prepare for the season opener.

The Cardinals showcased highs and lows in 2023, showing flashes of taking a leap to conference title contention. Cook says she hopes the team will build off of their strong defense.

Cook is adding a new assistant coach to the staff in Alexis Kapales, who replaces Kandi Midgett, who became the CCC head volleyball coach earlier this year. Cook says there are mixed feelings when an assistant leaves the program.

Guard Elmarko Jackson will miss the entire 2024-25 season after suffering a torn patellar tendon in a workout this week. The projected recovery time is 12-14 months.

Jackson is a former McDonald's All-American and was a four-star recruit out of high school in Marlton, New Jersey. He averaged 4.3 points per game last season, including starting 18 games during the year, and would have been a key guard on this year's roster.

The Jayhawks will lean more on transfers AJ Storr and Zeke Mayo with the loss of Jackson.

Red Raven Punter Commits to Pittsburgh

A Red Raven football player is headed to the Power 5, commiting to the Pittsburgh Panthers last week.

Punter Cade Dowd announced his commitment to Pitt after serving as the starting punter for the Ravens last season. He says it hasn't fully set in yet that he's headed to the ACC.

Pittsburgh has been a consistent contender in the ACC for the past several years, winning the conference championship in 2022. Dowd says there was an instant connection when he made his visit.

Dowd was denied a waiver to continue his junior college career, ending his time in Coffeyville after just one season. He says he will be forever thankful for the memories in JUCO.

Dowd recently competed in the Kohl's Texas Kicking, Punting, and Snapping Showcase, where he ranked first in roll out punts, first in transfer punts, and third overall. He will compete with incumbent starter Caleb Junko for the starting job.

Campaign Launched to Move Chiefs to Kansas

The efforts to relocate the Kansas City Chiefs to Kansas have gained support following a rejected sales tax in Jackson County.

A new website was created, with the help from Scoop and Score, Inc. to support a STAR Bond package that would bring the Super Bowl champions to the Sunflower State. A link to the website can be found HERE.

Following the rejection of the tax, the Kansas Legislature began discussing a bond proposal to build a new stadium that would draw the organization to Kansas City, Kansas.

Both Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson and Speaker Dan Hawkins sent a message to Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt regarding a potential relocation, stating "the rich tradition and history of the Chiefs are beloved across the entire Kansas City region and throughout Kansas. The potential to establish a home for the Chiefs family here on the Kansas side of the state line is an opportunity that deserves a thourough conversation."

The Kansas Conference Committee on Senate and House Commerce started working on a bill, but it has not been approved yet. The special session begins on June 18th.

Campers Improving Skills at Camp of Champions

Youth basketball players from around the area are improving their skills at the Camp of Champions.

The camp is organized by CCC men's basketball coach Jay Herkelman, with help from his players and staff. The goal of the camp is to motivate young basketball players to stick with the sport.

15-year old Rayvon says he's enjoyed one of the camp's competitive games.

Herkelman has been running the Camp of Champions since he began coaching in Coffeyville. 11-year old Bentley says it's been a good time learning from the Hall of Famer.

Many campers are improving skills such as passing, shooting and teamwork. Rayvon says he's learned a lot about the fundamentals.

The Camp of Champions continues through Thursday from Nellis Hall.

Camp Held at CCC for New High School Shot Clock Rule

This could soon be the sound in gyms across the State of Kansas with the implementation of the shot clock for high school basketball.

The new rule is only on a trial basis for this season but could be something that is permanently changed. To prepare for the change a camp was held at Coffeyville Community College for area officials and teams to get used to this new rule. Event Organizer and Official Will Tunstall says throughout the camp players, coaches and officials got more and more used to it.

Tunstall says this camp wasn't just good for the teams and officials but also for school administration and the volunteers who help run the scorers table during basketball season.

Some opponents of the rule change argued that it could prove costly for smaller schools to add additional equipment. Tunstall says schools are flexible in what equipment they can use to implement the shot clock.

Some schools, like 3A Caney Valley, have already added the equipment to their gym. Those in favor of the rule change hope to see a positive change in the pace of play at the end of games. It should also reduce complaints from coaches, fans and announcers about the stall ball style play high school basketball sees now.

Locally, the Southeast Kansas League has agreed to use the 35 second shot clock for all league games. After this one season trial period for the possible rule change, KSHSAA will decide whether it becomes a permanent change.

Raven Star Reflects on Time in Coffeyville

Red Raven basketball star Cris Carroll is off to Division 1, signing with the Youngstown State Penguins last week.

Youngstown State plays in the Horizon League conference, and has been one of the league's top teams in recent years. Carroll says he's had conversations with the Penguins for a few years.

Carroll transfered to Coffeyville after spending his freshman season with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons. He says that experience helped him grow as a player.

With the departures of Soti Nafpliotis and Landon Glasper, as well as an early season injury to Boubacar Keita, Carroll was thrust into a star role from the time he stepped on campus. He says his relationship with the coaches was strong throughout the season.

Carroll will have two seasons of eligibility remaining, and is preparing to join the Penguins this summer.

Woods-Blackowl Thankful for Time in Coffeyville

A leader for one of the most successful women's basketball classes in Red Raven history has made her commitment.

Point guard Tetona Woods-Blackowl will be continuing her career at Champion Christian College, a program in the National Christian College Athletic Association, and the 2021 NCCAA D2 National Champions.

Woods-Blackowl says she was able to grow as a player in her two seasons in Coffeyville.

Tetona was a key piece of a historic sophomore class for CCC Women's Basketball, starting over 50 games across two seasons. She says she'll have lifetime memories with this group.

Woods-Blackowl was considered undersized out of high school, which led to her competing at the JUCO level. She says the junior college experience has humbled her.

Tetona will have two seasons of eligibility remaining, and will look to make an immediate impact when she joins the team this summer.

Kansas State Baseball Off to Super Regionals

For the second time in school history, the Kansas State Wildcats are going to Super Regionals.

The Wildcats defeated Southeast Missouri State, 7-2, to sweep the Fayetteville Regional.

KSU entered the region as the 3-seed, but quickly made an impression, dismantling Lousiana Tech 19-4, before beating top seed Arkansas 7-6.

Star shortstop Kaelen Culpepper was the best player in the Regional, hitting for the cycle against Louisiana Tech, the first Wildcat to hit for the cycle since 2014. He continued the success with a 3-run homer against Arkansas to upset the nation's fifth-ranked team.

KSU is now one of the final 16 teams battling for a national championship, and will face the Virginia Cavaliers in the Charlottesville Super Regional.

Wacha to Miss Time with Foot Fracture

The Kansas City Royals will be going through their June schedule without a key veteran pitcher.

Right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha will miss three to four weeks with a non-displaced fracture in his left foot. Wacha was hit with a line drive in the first inning of Friday's loss to the Padres, and pitched five innings before exiting the game.

Wacha is not believed to need surgery, which would have added weeks to the recovery time. Wacha will be able to play catch on a knee, and keep his arm active while his foot recovers. The team is hopeful he can ramp up activities in about two weeks.

The Royals face a gauntlet schedule this month, playing seven games against the Cleveland Guardians, three games with the Los Angelese Dodgers, and four games with the New York Yankees.
