Caney Sweeps Iola in Crazy Basketball Doubleheader

The Caney Valley Bullpups sweep the Iola Mustangs in two competitive high school basketball games last night in Caney; the Lady Pups won 48-39 and the boys won 80-77 in overtime.

Elyn Washburn led the Lady Pups with fourteen points and Gracie Eden added eight. They improve to 7-0 on the season. Caney started slow but adjusted defensively which led to transition baskets later in the game.

It was an intense game for the boys; six technical fouls were called in the game. Iola held the lead for much of the first half, but Caney came back in the 3rd quarter. The 4th quarter saw its share of lead changes, but the biggest shot of the night came from Braydon Messner, who knocked down a huge three-pointer as time wound down in the 4th. Caney outscored Iola 8-5 in overtime for the win, as Cortland Carson's three pointer to tie bounced off the rim as time expired. Carson led all scorers with 29. Caney improves to 5-2 on the season.

Colt Hightower, who now has over 1,000 career points, led Caney with 27. Peyton Darden added 14, and Braydon Messner scored ten in the win.

Both teams will compete in the Caney Valley Ramona tournament on Thursday. The girls play Liberty at 10:00 a.m., while the boys play Caney, Oklahoma at 5:30.
