The Coffeyville Red Ravens dropped another home matchup in a one-possession game Saturday afternoon, falling to the Garden City Broncbusters 19-14.

The second Kansas Jayhawk Conference matchup for the Red Ravens started on a good note, as the defense forced a three-and-out on Garden City’s first possession.

Coffeyville then took a 7-0 lead on a 16-yard touchdown pass to Cam Hunter. Afterward, the Broncbusters reached the Red Ravens’ red zone twice but could only come away with field goals, making it a 7-6 game midway through the second quarter.

Garden City added a touchdown late in the second quarter to take a 13-7 lead into halftime, and the Red Ravens’ offense stalled as the Broncbusters scored 19 unanswered points to take a 19-7 advantage into the final frame.

After starting quarterback Marco Rodriquez left with an injury during a fourth-quarter drive, John Nicholas entered the game and found Jayden Howard for a 30-yard touchdown reception on fourth down, cutting the deficit to five.

The Red Ravens got the ball back with under two minutes remaining and no timeouts, but a fumble ended their final possession as Garden City secured the Homecoming victory.

The Red Ravens fall to 1-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. Coffeyville will travel to Iowa next week to take on Ellsworth, with pregame coverage beginning at 10:30 a.m. and kickoff set for 11 on US 98.

Field Kindley High School football falls to Independence on their Homecoming Night 56-16.

After an opening drive fumble by the Bulldogs, Coffeyville would strike first on a 16 yard touchdown catch by Kobi Kirk.  After the first score it would be all Independence scoring 49 unanswered points.  Indy improves to 2-2 on the season and Coffeyville falls to 0-4.

The Nado will stay on the road as they travel to Winfield next Friday.

Criss Davis and his Bullpups traveled to Baxter Springs on Friday night and spoiled the Lions’ Homecoming festivities by pulling away in the final 24 minutes for a 64-26 victory.

After forcing an early three-and-out, Caney Valley struck first on a two-yard touchdown run by Traxcyn Garton, followed by his two-point conversion.

Baxter Springs quarterback Cole Parrish then broke free for a 70-yard touchdown run to make it 8-7, marking the first time an opponent has scored against the Bullpups this season.

Caney answered with a three-yard touchdown run from Jace Buckley before a fourth-down pass from the seven-yard line to Drake Roberds extended the lead to 21-7.

The Lions responded with touchdown passes of 58 and 52 yards to cut the deficit to 21-19 with about a minute left in the first half.

After a strong kick return from Huck Seger, Caney went to the air with 10 seconds remaining, connecting with Roberds for a 42-yard touchdown to regain momentum. The ensuing two-point conversion gave the Bullpups a 29-19 halftime lead.

The second half belonged to Caney Valley, as the Bullpups recovered an attempted onside kick before Buckley scored on a reverse to make it 37-19. Caney then picked off Parrish, and Garton followed with a 39-yard touchdown run.

The Bullpups added two more scores, including another touchdown catch from Roberds and a rushing touchdown from Buckley, to take a 56-19 lead after outscoring Baxter Springs 27-0 in the third quarter.

Buckley finished with four rushing touchdowns and more than 200 yards on the ground, while Roberds had three touchdown catches and more than 100 receiving yards.

Buckley and Roberds combined for seven of Caney Valley’s nine touchdowns, while the Bullpups’ second-half adjustments helped keep Parrish and the Baxter Springs receivers in check.

Caney Valley will face Neodesha next week during the Bluestreaks’ Homecoming, as the Bullpups and Bluestreaks meet with unblemished records on the line. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98, as the Bullpups look to play Homecoming spoiler once again.

The Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis are coming off a 44-0 win over the Humboldt Cubs in Week 3.

While the Bullpups’ offense has been rolling, the defense has been just as impressive. Caney Valley has yet to allow an opponent to reach the end zone this season.

Davis says he likes how his defense is playing after shutting out a Humboldt team capable of putting up points. He also emphasized the team’s strong run defense and improved ability to contain opponents through the air.

Caney Valley will make the 60-minute trip to Baxter Springs this Friday to take on the Lions. Davis says his defense will need to be alert to the explosiveness of Baxter Springs’ offense, as the Lions can break off big plays and use their elusiveness to make defenders miss.

The Bullpups are tied for first in the TVL and will look to stay unbeaten tonight against a non-district opponent from the CNC as they reach the halfway point of the regular season. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens football team is coming off another close defeat, falling to the Iowa Central Tritons in a back-and-forth affair, 31-27, last Saturday.

The loss drops Coffeyville to 1-3 on the season, but the Red Ravens remain 1-0 in conference play. They’ll have a chance to improve to 2-0 in the KJCCC tomorrow when they host the Garden City Broncbusters during Homecoming weekend.

Head coach Nick Dobler says he likes how his team battled back to take the lead in the fourth quarter after falling behind by two scores, however, he’d like to see the Red Ravens stop hurting themselves and put themselves in better situations late in games.

Garden City enters tomorrow’s matchup at 2-3 and will look to even its record against a conference opponent. Dobler says both teams are in a similar position, and his squad will need to focus on itself and execute amid a night of Homecoming festivities.

The Red Ravens are one of four teams still unbeaten in conference play and will look to build momentum as they head into the heart of their season. Pregame coverage begins Saturday at 12:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 1 p.m. on US 98.

Independence High School prepares for their week four action taking on their rival on Homecoming Night.

The Bulldogs have dropped two in a row and are 1-2 on the season. IHS has been outscored 57-40 in the second half of games this season. Head Coach Kendall Fiscus says they come out of halftime slow. Coffeyville and Independence have already seen each other once this season at the Jamboree. Fiscus says both teams have changed a lot since then.

Independence Homecoming Coronation starts at 6:30pm and kickoff is at 7:00pm.

Field Kindley High School heads into week four looking to play the role of spoiler on Independence's Homecoming night.

The Nado are coming off a 39-18 loss to Parsons. Head Coach Mike O'Connor says the team has to be like goldfish and have short memory. The Bulldogs average 25 points a game. O'Connor says they have to focus on slowing down their offensive attack.

Pregame is at 6:30pm and kickoff is at 7:00pm on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks and head coach Nathan West continue their hot start after a 61-0 victory over the Eureka Tornadoes in Week 3.

The Bluestreaks are now 3-0 as they prepare for district play, with both sides of the ball working in unison to help Neodesha earn some sizeable victories.

Coming into the game against Eureka, West says he challenged his players to focus on details and fundamentals and play a complete game from the opening whistle to the final one. 

The Bluestreaks will face Central Heights in Week 4, looking to continue their perfect start, while the Vikings will be looking for their third win. West says Central Heights has some quality receivers, so his defense will need to be prepared for their route running and find ways to put pressure on the quarterback. 

Neodesha will be on the road for the third time in four weeks and will complete a road-heavy stretch after Friday, with only one more away game remaining on the schedule for the rest of the season.

The West Elk Patriots and head coach Ian Denton look to rebound after a 44-18 rivalry loss to Sedan last Friday.

The Patriots were looking to avenge their 2025 defeat to the Blue Devils, but Sedan pulled away late in the second half, dropping West Elk to 1-2.

Denton says several players had to step into unfamiliar positions because of injuries. Despite trailing by just 10 points in the fourth quarter, the Patriots couldn’t capitalize on their long drives to put pressure on Sedan.

Injuries have hampered the Patriots this season, with several players sidelined. However, Denton says freshman running back Carson Tindle did a great job stepping up and filling in amid some unforeseen absences.

The Patriots will travel to face the Southeast Lancers this Friday, looking to get back to .500 while continuing to focus on getting their injured players healthy.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens’ men’s and women’s soccer teams both have winning records as they approach the halfway point of their seasons.

The men’s team sits at 3-2-3 after opening the year 2-0, but has struggled to finish games, with ties becoming a familiar result over the past few weeks. Coffeyville is coming off a 6-1 win over Seward County and will host conference leader Cowley this Saturday, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.

The women’s soccer team is 6-2-1 after a 3-0 road loss to Butler last night. The Red Ravens opened the season 5-0 and remain among the top teams in the Kansas Jayhawk Conference. The loss was just their second of the year, and they’ll host Cowley on Saturday, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.

Meanwhile, the CCC volleyball team enters the second half of its season at 8-12. After starting the year a few wins above .500, the Red Ravens have gone 3-7 over their past 10 matches and currently sit ninth in the conference.

Coffeyville is coming off a four-set loss to Independence yesterday evening and will return to action tomorrow against Northeast Community College in Arkansas, with first serve set for 4:30 p.m.

Sedan High School football is heading into week four looking to make it three wins in a row after beating West Elk 44-18.

It was Homecoming night for Sedan and Head Coach Mick Holt says the team came out a little flat. Sedan would outscore West Elk 24-6 in the second half to secure the win. The Blue Devils look to make it three wins in a row as the take on Flinthills on Friday. Holt says both teams may be 2-1 but the Mustangs were close to being 3-0.

This is Sedan's first district game of the season.

Labette County High School football is heading into week four coming off a 29-28 win over Emporia on Homecoming Night.

Trailing 28-21 in the fourth quarter the Grizzlies would score a touchdown to make it 28-27 and then chose to go for two to take the lead. Head Coach Bradley Argabright says he knew before the scored the touchdown they would go for two.  Labette heads on the road for the first time this season taking on 3-0 5A Washington. Argabright says they have been one of the better teams in their conference the last few seasons.

This is Labette's first of three straight road games.

Cherryvale head coach Harry Hester reached a major milestone Friday, as the Chargers earned a 54-8 Homecoming victory over Bluestem.

With the win, Hester now stands alone as the winningest head coach in Cherryvale football history, passing Tom Harrell with 77 victories.

The victory moves Cherryvale to 2-1 on the season, and Hester was humble in the moment, giving credit to his players and coaching staff for making the accomplishment possible. 

The Chargers will be on the road to face Galena this Friday. The Bulldogs are still looking for their first win of the season, but Hester says not to let the records deceive, especially as district play begins. 

In his 14th year at the helm in Cherryvale, Hester will have more opportunities to add to the win record as the Chargers look to begin district play with a strong performance.

The Fredonia Yellowjackets secured their first victory of the season last Friday, defeating Northeast 56-18. The win also marked head coach Lucus Lanning’s first victory as head coach of the Yellowjackets.

Fredonia was coming off a tough loss to Caney Valley in Week 2 and responded with a convincing win over the Vikings, who were looking to improve to 2-1.

Lanning says his team did a good job of sharing the ball with different players and finished strong after coming out of halftime a bit slow. 

Fredonia’s defense also caused havoc across the field, and Lanning says defensive coordinator Jared Ratzlaff did a good job of putting together a scheme for Northeast. 

The Yellowjackets will host the Humboldt Cubs this Friday, looking to get back to .500 against a team coming off its own tough loss to the Bullpups.

The Kansas State Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks women’s soccer teams are preparing for their next matchups after opening conference play.

The Wildcats are off to their best start in program history under second-year head coach Colleen Corbin, opening the season 5-1-3 with a strong showing in non-conference play.

After winning their first four games, K-State has gone 1-1-3 since then and dropped its first Big 12 game to Houston, 3-0. The Wildcats will have a chance to bounce back tomorrow against Arizona at home, with kickoff set for 6:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Kansas opened conference play with a 1-1 draw against Cincinnati. The Jayhawks had won three straight before facing the Bearcats last Friday, and the tie moves them to 6-2-1 on the season.

Kansas will also play tomorrow, hosting Arizona State as it looks to get back in the win column. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.

The Independence Bulldogs suffered a 38-26 loss to the Fort Scott Tigers in their home matchup Friday night.

Following a Week 2 loss to Augusta, the Bulldogs were looking to rebound and get back above .500 against a familiar opponent they defeated 15-8 last season.

Friday’s contest featured plenty of scoring, with both teams trading touchdowns and entering halftime tied at 14. Coming into the game, head coach Kendall Fiscus says his team needed to be prepared for Fort Scott’s offensive and defensive lines, along with its strong ground game.

The game opened up in the second half, as Fort Scott scored three touchdowns to take a 38-20 lead into the fourth quarter. Fiscus says the Tigers are a relentless team and that playing a full four quarters would be key to coming away with a win.

The Bulldogs would score again to cut into the lead, but couldn't find the end zone again, falling by 12. The loss drops Independence to 1-2 on the season. The Bulldogs will look to get back to an even record in Week 4 when they host the Field Kindley Tornado.

The Erie Red Devils and head coach David Pitts are coming off a 66-12 loss to the South Sumner Outlaws.

The Red Devils were looking for their second consecutive win after an 82-36 showing against Pleasanton in Week 2, but were unable to slow down the Outlaws' offense.

Down 33 points early in the first half, Pitts says he began to see some of his players drop their heads, but was proud of their fight and grit as they continued to compete and make plays. 

Pitts also says he liked how his players flew around the field with aggression, and pointed out tight end Evan Dillinger for having a great run after the catch en route to a big 60-yard touchdown. 

The Red Devils will face the Udall Eagles on the road Friday. Udall is still looking for its first win of the season, while Erie will look to get back to .500.

The Kansas Jayhawks volleyball team is coming off a pair of sweeps over Ole Miss and Grand Canyon in the Jayhawk Classic, improving to 7-3 on the season.

The pair of wins mark Kansas' sixth straight three-set victory after a slow start to the year.

Following the match against Ole Miss, head coach Matt Ulmer says his team came out with some aggressiveness but was able to settle down and find its offensive rhythm in the first and third sets.

As Kansas prepares to begin Big 12 play, Ulmer says his players are building better connections and chemistry, while he would also like to see more consistency in the serving game.

Kansas will open conference play Friday when it hosts the Houston Cougars at Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Kansas City Chiefs outlasted the visiting Indianapolis Colts Sunday, as Patrick Mahomes engineered a seven-play, 46-yard drive to put Harrison Butker in position to knock through a 40-yard field goal for a 33-30 overtime victory.

The Chiefs and Colts traded leads throughout the first half, with Indianapolis carrying a narrow 20-17 advantage into the break. Kansas City came out strong after halftime, putting together an 80-yard touchdown drive capped by a one-yard pass to Jalen Royals in the end zone for the first touchdown of his career.

Kansas City never trailed again, though Indianapolis managed to even the score twice, including late in regulation and again in overtime. With a little over three minutes remaining in the extra period, the Chiefs got one final opportunity, and Butker’s kick secured the win and moved Kansas City to 2-0.

Mahomes finished with three touchdown passes and 382 passing yards, while Kenneth Walker eclipsed 100 rushing yards for the second consecutive game. Travis Kelce also turned in a 101-yard performance and added a touchdown.

The Chiefs will head to Miami next week to take on the Dolphins in Week 3. Pregame coverage begins at 11 a.m., with kickoff set for noon on the Mighty 690.

The Labette County Grizzlies and head coach Bradley Argabright eked out a 29-28 Homecoming victory over the visiting Emporia Spartans Friday night.

The Grizzlies found the end zone midway through the first quarter and carried a seven-point lead into the second, but Emporia’s offense found its rhythm and scored 20 unanswered points to take control of the game.

Coming into the matchup, Argabright says the Spartans were well-coached and had an established running game, along with a quarterback capable of making plays through the air. 

Down 13 at halftime, Labette County fought its way back and took a one-point lead midway through the third quarter. Argabright says he wasn’t concerned about the Homecoming festivities becoming a distraction as his team battled back late in the game. 

The Grizzlies scored the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter and converted the two-point attempt to take the lead for good. Labette County then stopped Emporia twice on downs to preserve the 29-28 win. The Grizzlies improve to 2-1 and will hit the road for the first time next week to face Washington.

The Sedan Blue Devils and head coach Mick Holt picked up a big rivalry victory during Homecoming week, defeating the West Elk Patriots 44-18.

Both teams traded scores in a chaotic second quarter that featured five total touchdowns, with Sedan taking a one-possession lead into halftime at 20-12.

Entering the matchup, Holt says his team couldn’t afford to overlook any opponent, especially a rival like West Elk. He pointed to the Patriots’ strong backfield and offensive line as areas Sedan needed to prepare for. 

The Blue Devils held onto their lead over the final two quarters, including a 24-point outburst in the last 12 minutes. Holt says his team was ready for the challenge, with both squads coming off victories and looking to build momentum. 

The win moves Sedan to 2-1, and the Blue Devils will continue their homestand this Friday against Flinthills as they aim for their third victory of the season in Week 4.

The K-State Wildcats improved to 3-0 Saturday, overcoming a slow start at Bill Snyder Family Stadium to earn a 31-20 victory over the Tulane Green Wave.

Head coach Collin Klein says his defense gave up some yardage to Tulane, but he was proud of how the Wildcats forced the Green Wave to settle for field goals, which he believes played an important role in the outcome.

K-State will hit the road for the first time this season when the Wildcats travel to Cincinnati this Saturday to begin Big 12 play. Coverage will be on the Mighty 690.

Meanwhile, the Kansas Jayhawks dropped to 1-2 after falling to Arizona State 24-17 in London, England.

Kansas struggled to get its offense going until the fourth quarter, but couldn’t do enough to overcome the Sun Devils. Head coach Lance Leipold says consistency remains an issue on that side of the ball, though the Jayhawks have shown flashes of success.

The Jayhawks will have a bye week to work on areas that need improvement before returning home to face Middle Tennessee on October 3, ahead of the start of Big 12 play.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens football team dropped a back-and-forth non-conference matchup with the Iowa Central Tritons 31-27 Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Iowa Central opened the scoring with a three-yard scoop-and-score after recovering a fumble near the Coffeyville end zone. The Red Ravens responded later in the first quarter when John Nicholas connected with Tyler Jackson for a highlight-reel, one-handed touchdown catch on third-and-goal from the nine.

After the extra point was unsuccessful, Coffeyville trailed 7-6. The teams traded scores from there, with Nicholas finding Jayden Howard for a 37-yard touchdown just before halftime to give the Red Ravens a 12-10 lead.

The Tritons scored on their first possession of the second half before returning a Nicholas interception 43 yards for a touchdown to build a 24-12 advantage.

Coffeyville answered in the fourth quarter after backup quarterback Marco Rodriguez connected with tight end Keith Jones for a touchdown, Jones’ first catch and touchdown of the season. TJ Ward then scored on a two-yard run, and a successful two-point conversion put the Red Ravens ahead 27-24 with 5:24 remaining.

Iowa Central drove down the field late in the fourth quarter and faced fourth-and-goal from the three-yard line with just over a minute remaining, but a defensive holding penalty at the end of the play on Coffeyville gave the Tritons a first down, and they scored on the next play with 52 seconds left to reclaim the lead.

An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on the touchdown celebration forced Iowa Central to kick off from its own 15, and Jayden Howard returned the ball to the Tritons’ 41-yard line to give Coffeyville one final opportunity.

Rodriguez and the Red Ravens moved the ball to the 12-yard line with two seconds remaining, but a cross-field throw to Jackson in the back of the end zone fell incomplete as Iowa Central held on for the 4 point victory. 

The loss moves Coffeyville to 1-3 on the season and 1-0 in conference play. The Red Ravens will host Garden City next week at Veterans Memorial Stadium, with pregame coverage beginning at 12:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 1 p.m. on US 98.

The Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis turned in another strong performance Friday night, shutting out Tri-Valley League opponent Humboldt 44-0 during their home Pink Out Night.

Caney Valley received the opening kickoff and marched 65 yards on nine plays, capped by an eight-yard touchdown run from Jace Buckley, who escaped two Humboldt defenders on his way into the end zone. The Cubs threatened to answer with a drive into the Bullpup red zone, but fumbled on second down, giving the ball back to Caney Valley.

The Bullpups capitalized on the turnover, as quarterback Layne Denny connected with Konner Paulie for a 78-yard touchdown strike on third-and-19 to make it 14-0. Humboldt reached the red zone again but was stopped on fourth-and-long, and Caney Valley added to its lead while forcing two more first-half fumbles.

Denny and Traxcyn Garton each surpassed 100 yards of production in the first half, with Denny doing his damage through the air and Garton on the ground.

Caney Valley added another score before halftime when Denny found Jacob McVey on fourth-and-six from the 14-yard line. McVey hauled in the catch in the flat and raced to paydirt for his first touchdown of the season, as a successful two-point conversion sent the Bullpups into the break with a 36-0 lead.

Humboldt’s first possession of the second half ended with a fumbled punt in its own end zone, which Caney Valley recovered and turned into another touchdown to extend the lead to 44-0.

With a running clock in the third quarter, Caney Valley’s underclassmen gained more valuable playing time and helped preserve the shutout. Through 12 quarters this season, the Bullpups have yet to allow a scoring drive or a touchdown. The Bullpup defense forced four fumbles, recovered two, and stopped the Cubs on fourth down three times.

Caney Valley improves to 3-0 and will travel to Baxter Springs next week. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 p.m. on US 98.

Field Kindley falls in their week three matchup with Parsons 39-18.

The Nado got things started with a one play 33-yard touchdown run by Nathan Magna.  Parsons would answer right back, with a 42-yard touchdown run by Kane Leon.  Coffeyville would take the lead again on a 36-yard touchdown run by Isaiah Bowie.  

The Vikings would take the lead 13-12 and then outscore Coffeyville 26-6 the rest of the way.  Penalties really hurt Coffeyville as they had 15 for 149 yards.  The Nado head to Independence next week to take on the Bulldogs on homecoming night.

Field Kindley is looking for their first win of the season as they return home to take on Parsons.

The Nado are coming off a a 43-8 loss to Chanute where they struggled to get anything going offensively. Head Coach Mike O'Connor says the Blue Comets controlled the line of scrimmage.  Heat continues to be a problem across the area changing not only practice times but also the intensity and locations of practices. O'Connor says they follow the guidelines put out by KSHSAA.

O'Connor says as they prepared for Parsons this week they continued to focus on the fundamentals.  Pregame for tonight's matchup will start at 6:30pm with kick off at 7:00pm on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

The Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis are aiming for a 3-0 start after outscoring their first two opponents 113-0.

The Bullpups’ rushing attack powered the team to a Week 1 victory, while the passing game broke open in Week 2, giving Caney Valley a balanced approach on offense.

The defense has also been a standout, forcing turnovers and coming up with key stops on fourth down. Davis says Samuel Denton, along with the ability of all three levels of the defense to stop the run, has been a big part of the Bullpups’ success. 

Caney Valley will face a familiar Tri-Valley League foe in Humboldt this Friday, marking the fifth consecutive year the two teams have met. Davis says the Cubs like to outnumber opponents and stay versatile by mixing the run and pass. 

Caney Valley won last year’s matchup 38-0, while Humboldt won the previous three meetings from 2022 through 2024. The two 2-0 teams will meet tonight in Caney, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

The Oswego Indians and head coach Matt Fowler enter Week 3 with a 2-0 record after another strong offensive performance.

Oswego is coming off a 59-14 victory over St. Paul last Friday, as the Indians scored more than 50 points for the second straight week and have now put up 115 points through their first eight quarters of the season.

Fowler says Oswego has a strong offensive line that understands the schemes, along with plenty of weapons that make the ground-oriented attack dangerous. He also says the passing game is starting to develop after the Indians went 5-for-5 through the air last Friday.

Oswego will face the Crest Lancers on the road this Friday, and Fowler says he’s emphasizing getting the defensive backs more involved in stopping the run while also limiting offensive penalties.

This will be the fifth straight meeting between the two teams, with the series split 2-2 over the past four years. Oswego won last year’s matchup 45-0, while Crest will enter Friday still searching for its first win of the season.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens football team returns to Veterans Memorial Stadium this Saturday to host the Iowa Central Tritons in Week 5 of the NJCAA season.

Coffeyville is coming off a 31-30 victory over rival Independence and will look to put together four strong quarters after a stellar first half and slower second half against the Pirates last week.

Head coach Nick Dobler was pleased with how his team jumped on Independence early and carried confidence into halftime, but says the Red Ravens left some opportunities on the table by the end of the game.

The Coffeyville defense made several big stops and forced another interception against Independence, while redshirt freshman Sean Oliver was named Defensive Player of the Week after recording eight tackles and two tackles for loss. Dobler says Oliver’s work ethic has played a big role in his standout performances.

Game time has been moved to 10 a.m. Saturday as the teams look to beat the heat. Coffeyville has a chance to get back to .500, while Iowa Central will look for its third straight win. Pregame coverage begins at 9:30 a.m. on US 98.

The Fredonia Yellowjackets and head coach Lucus Lanning are coming off a 55-0 defeat to the Caney Valley Bullpups last Friday.

The Yellowjackets entered the matchup looking for their first win of the season after falling to Cherryvale 36-16 in Week 1.

Lanning says quarterback Griffyn Salmon played well on offense, while defender Gaige Busch stood out on the other side of the ball.

Entering Week 3, Lanning says the offense will simplify things and get back to what the Yellowjackets do best, while the defense will work to improve in the passing game after giving up a few long throws last week.

Fredonia will host Northeast this Friday as the Yellowjackets look for their first win of the season against the Vikings. The last meeting between the two teams came in 2013, when Northeast won 44-14.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks and head coach Nathan West are coming off a 49-22 victory over rival Cherryvale in Week 2.

The Bluestreaks trailed by one heading into halftime last Friday, but scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to pull away and take the road victory.

The win moved Neodesha to 2-0, and West says his team did a good job of responding to the challenge after a sloppy first half and refocusing to finish the game strong.

West says the Bluestreaks will focus on the basics and fundamentals this week as they work to get quality practices in while adjusting their schedule because of the recent heat wave.

Neodesha will return home for the first time this season Friday when the Bluestreaks host Eureka, with the Tornadoes still looking for their first win. Through two games, Neodesha has outscored its opponents 84-22.

The 22nd-ranked Kansas volleyball team is coming off a three-set sweep over Wichita State on Tuesday as the Jayhawks continue to build momentum before Big 12 play.

Kansas opened the season against some stiff competition and went 1-3 through its first four matches, but has since found a rhythm, winning four straight matches, all in straight sets.

The Jayhawks opened the season ranked 15th in the nation, and head coach Matt Ulmer says his team is focused on getting better with every point while remaining excited about its potential, especially on the defensive end.

Coming off a match against Tulsa last Sunday in front of a home crowd, Ulmer says he liked the team’s aggressiveness in the serve game and thought the defense showed great movement and discipline.

Kansas will look to make it five straight wins tomorrow when the Jayhawks face Ole Miss at 6 p.m. in the Jayhawk Classic, with Big 12 play approaching.

The West Elk Patriots and head coach Ian Denton picked up a big win last Friday night, defeating the Udall Eagles 48-0.

After scoring eight points the week before against Cedar Vale, the Patriots got their offense going against Udall and came up with several long touchdown plays to build an early lead.

The Patriots also played a clean game, committing just one penalty and turning the ball over zero times. Denton says he was pleased with the way his offense spread the ball around, with six different players finding the end zone and gaining confidence along the way.

The Patriots will face rival Sedan this Friday, and Denton says his team will need to match the Blue Devils’ speed while continuing to take care of the football.

West Elk fell to Sedan 56-12 last season, and the Patriots will look to get revenge when they travel to face the Blue Devils in Week 3.

The Cherryvale Chargers and head coach Harry Hester are coming off a 49-22 defeat to rival Neodesha last Friday. 

The Chargers’ first offensive possession ended in a fumble on the second snap from scrimmage, and the Bluestreaks capitalized with a touchdown. Cherryvale would answer with a pick-six later in the quarter, setting up a back-and-forth first half that ended with the Chargers taking a one-point lead into halftime, 22-21. 

Hester says Neodesha made some second-half adjustments, including using more pressure-heavy defensive packages that made things difficult for the Cherryvale offense in the final quarters. 

The Chargers will look to rebound during Homecoming week, with Hester also having a chance to reach a milestone. A win would make him the winningest coach in Cherryvale history, adding another storyline to an already important week. Hester says his team will have to come out with some intensity against a Bluestem team looking for its first win. 

Cherryvale will face the Bluestem Lions Friday night in its final tuneup before district play begins, as the Chargers look to get back in the win column and celebrate Homecoming with a victory.

The Kansas women’s soccer team is a few days away from starting Big 12 play, with the Jayhawks sitting at 6-2 after eight non-conference games.

Kansas’ only losses came against a ranked Ohio State team and a tough Utah Valley squad, while the Jayhawks closed out non-conference play with a 1-0 win over St. Louis last Saturday.

St. Louis knocked Kansas out of the tournament two years ago, and the Jayhawks had never won on the road against the Billikens before last weekend. Head coach Nate Lie says he was pleased with how his team battled through the grueling match to come away with the victory.

Lie says he was proud of the way Kansas performed and believes the way the Jayhawks finished their non-conference schedule will help prepare them for the challenges of Big 12 play.

The Jayhawks will begin conference action this Friday when they travel to Ohio to take on the Cincinnati Bearcats, a team Kansas defeated 1-0 last season.

In their inaugural season playing in the 8-man format, the Erie Red Devils and head coach David Pitts picked up their first-ever 8-man football victory Friday night, blowing out the Pleasanton Blue Jays 82-36 on the road.

Everything clicked offensively for Erie after the Red Devils went scoreless in Week 1, as they moved the ball at will and put together consistent scoring drives throughout the game.

Coming into Week 2, Pitts preached aggressiveness as the team’s main focal point, and he says the physicality and execution his team showed stood out to him Friday night. 

Pitts praised running back Quincy Brown, who scored six touchdowns, along with interior defensive linemen Cooper Cleaver and Manny Ramirez for their strong performances. 

The Red Devils will face South Sumner in Week 3, a team that enters the matchup with a 2-0 record. Erie will look to hand the Outlaws its first loss of the season when the Red Devils host South Sumner this Friday night.

The Labette County Grizzlies and head coach Bradley Argabright dropped their Week 2 home game to the Frontenac Raiders 33-7.

The Grizzlies’ offense struggled to put together scoring drives against the Raiders after scoring 36 points against Parsons in Week 1.

Coming away from the Week 1 matchup with the Vikings, Argabright says the first quarter felt like a grind, especially with a few penalties, but the Grizzlies found their footing over the next two frames, got some new faces onto the field and came away injury-free. 

Entering last week against Frontenac, Argabright says both teams expected to win, while pointing to the senior core of the Raiders as one of their strengths. 

The loss moves the Grizzlies to 1-1 on the year, and they’ll host the Emporia Spartans this Friday. Emporia has also split its first two games, as Labette County will look to get back above .500.

The Kansas Jayhawks and head coach Lance Leipold lost their Border War battle to the Missouri Tigers 38-21 Friday night in Lawrence.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Jayhawks got on the board with an 88-yard blocked field-goal return for a touchdown. The teams traded scores from there, with the game tied at 14 heading into halftime after a late Missouri touchdown drive.

KU’s first two offensive drives of the second half ended in turnovers, as a fumble and interception both turned into Missouri touchdowns to give the Tigers a 28-14 lead. Leipold says the turnovers were deflating, but his team never stopped fighting. 

Jayhawk quarterback Isaiah Marshall finished with two touchdown passes and two interceptions. Leipold praised Marshall’s ability to compete and says the game will provide a valuable learning opportunity for the young quarterback. 

The Jayhawks will travel to London, England, this week to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in the Union Jack Classic at Wembley Stadium. Pregame coverage begins at 9:30 a.m., with kickoff set for 11 on Classic Hits 104.1.

The St. Paul Indians are looking for their first win of the season after head coach Keith Wiatrak and his team fell to Oswego 59-14 last Friday.

A 1992 St. Paul graduate, Wiatrak has coached at the school since 1998 and took over as head coach in 2014. He retired from the role after the 2022-23 season but returned in 2024 after the Indians were unable to find a new head coach.

Coming into the game against Oswego, Wiatrak says his team needed to focus on stopping the running game and stacking the box, forcing the Indians to beat them through the air. 

St. Paul has a younger team this season with 21 players, including just five upperclassmen, and Wiatrak says the future looks bright from a numbers standpoint. 

The Indians will face Yates Center this week and will look for their first win of the season on the road against the Wildcats.

The Independence Bulldogs are coming off a Week 2 loss to the Augusta Orioles, 28-14.

Independence came into the game 1-0 after a close 36-33 win over Columbus, and head coach Kendall Fiscus says he was pleased with how his team finished that game, something the Bulldogs struggled with a bit last year.

The Bulldogs got the scoring started against the Orioles, taking an 8-0 lead into the second quarter, but they wouldn’t find the end zone again until the fourth, when they already trailed 22-8.

The loss moves Independence to 1-1, as the Bulldogs will take on Fort Scott this Friday, looking to get back in the win column.

The K-State Wildcats improved to 2-0 under head coach Collin Klein, turning a 10-point halftime lead into a 27-point advantage on their way to a 34-7 blowout victory over Washington State.

Quarterback Avery Johnson threw for nearly 200 yards and two touchdowns, while running back Rodney Fields Jr. eclipsed 100 yards on the ground and added a rushing touchdown.

The Wildcat defense has allowed just 10 total points through the first two games, and Klein praised his defense’s ability to rush the passer and take away opportunities through the air.

K-State also rushed for nearly 300 yards, and Klein says his deep rotation of running backs stayed eager to get back on the field as the Wildcats wore down the Cougars throughout the game.

The Wildcats will return home Friday to host Tulane, looking to start the season 3-0 under Klein.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens football team outlasted the Independence Pirates in an early-season KJCCC rivalry matchup, winning 31-30 at Emmot Field Saturday night.

Independence struck first with a long touchdown pass but missed the extra point before Coffeyville answered less than three minutes later. Quarterback John Nicholas connected with Bralin Preston on a 17-yard touchdown pass, giving Preston his first touchdown reception of the season and putting the Red Ravens ahead.

Coffeyville added to its lead with a two-yard touchdown run from TJ Ward at the 5:14 mark of the first quarter, but Independence answered on the very next play with a 75-yard touchdown pass. The Pirates missed the extra point again, leaving Coffeyville with a 14-12 lead.

Coffeyville extended its lead to 28-12 before halftime on touchdown passes of six and 37 yards to Messiah Cage and Jayden Howard. Independence tightened up defensively in the second half, cutting the deficit to eight on its opening possession of the third quarter before Adrian Hemelt pushed the Red Ravens’ lead back to two scores with a 20-yard field goal.

The Pirates continued to chip away, cutting the lead to four on a 12-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter. Coffeyville’s defense then came up with a huge stand, moving Independence backward on three straight plays after the Pirates reached first-and-goal and forcing a long field-goal attempt, which Independence converted with 7:23 remaining to make it a one-point game.

Coffeyville and Independence traded empty possessions down the stretch, but a pass interference penalty on third-and-long inside Pirates territory gave the Red Ravens a fresh set of downs inside the final 90 seconds. Coffeyville then took three knees in victory formation to run out the clock and secure its first win of the season.

The victory moves Coffeyville to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the KJCCC. The Red Ravens will host Iowa Central next Saturday at Veterans Memorial Stadium, with pregame coverage beginning at 12:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 1 p.m. on US 98.

South Coffeyville 36 vs. Claremore Christian 32

The Caney Valley Bullpups put up 50-plus points for the second straight week, rolling to a 55-0 win over the Fredonia Yellowjackets Friday night during their home opener on Military Appreciation Night.

Caney Valley forced a three-and-out on Fredonia’s first possession, and Traxcyn Garton got the scoring started with a 21-yard rushing touchdown after setting up the Bullpups with a strong punt return into Yellowjacket territory.

The Bullpups rode the arm of quarterback Layne Denny, who found three different receivers for four touchdowns through the air while throwing for more than 200 yards.

Huck Seger emerged as Denny’s favorite target, catching two passes for two touchdowns and nearly 125 receiving yards. The Caney Valley defense also made Fredonia uncomfortable all night, penetrating the offensive front and giving Yellowjacket quarterback Griffyn Salmon little time in the backfield.

Through the first eight quarters of the season, Caney Valley has scored 113 total points. Head coach Criss Davis pulled his starters in the second half with the Bullpups already leading 48-0, turning his attention toward next week’s matchup with Humboldt.

Caney Valley will host the Cubs next Friday, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 7 p.m. on US 98.

Coffeyville falls in their week two matchup with Chanute 43-8.

Chanute's defense was in the backfield all night holding Coffeyville to -7 yards rushing in the first half.  The Blue Comets jumped out to 35-0 lead at the break.

Coffeyville was able to get on the board in the 4th Quarter on a six yard touchdown run by Owen Billingsly and added a two point conversion on a pass from Kobi Kirk to Drake Strimple.

Coffeyville returns home next week to face Parsons.

The Oswego Indians and ninth-year head coach Matt Fowler are heading into Week 2 of the football season after opening the year with a dominant offensive performance.

Oswego is 1-0 after putting up 36 points by halftime against Marmaton Valley last Friday and building a 43-8 lead early in the third quarter before cruising to a 56-32 victory.

After Marmaton Valley had beaten Oswego in the season opener each of the previous three years, including a 44-25 win in 2025, Fowler and the Indians came out of the gates swinging. Fowler says his defense played a big role in the win, coming up with key stops when the Wildcats threatened in the red zone. 

Oswego went 6-2 in 2025 and won five straight during the middle stretch of the regular season, but Fowler says his team doesn’t focus too much on wins and losses and instead puts its attention on improving each week. 

Oswego will face St. Paul tonight, looking to build on last year’s 65-18 win over the Indians and start 2-0 for the first time since 2022.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens are looking to claim their first win of the season in a rivalry matchup with Independence this Saturday.

Coffeyville dropped a thriller last week against Iowa Western in an overtime game filled with exciting plays and extended reviews, all while battling through the hot weather.

Even with the loss, head coach Nick Dobler liked what he saw from his team and says he was proud of how the Red Ravens out-muscled and outrushed the Reivers, while also noting there are a few areas to clean up before the matchup with the Pirates. 

The rivalry between Coffeyville and Independence tends to bring out an extra edge, including a 28-20 Red Ravens victory last year that saw ejections from each side. With both teams already playing close finishes this season, Dobler says he’s confident his team will come through if Saturday’s matchup comes down to a one-possession game late. 

Coffeyville and Independence both sit at 0-2 and will look to get in the win column as they begin conference play against one another Saturday. Pregame coverage starts at 5:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 6 on US 98.

Field Kindley High School football heads on the road for a week two matchup with Chanute.

The Nado are coming off a week one loss to Pittsburg 45-7. Head Coach Mike O'Connor says the final score doesn't tell the full story. Coffeyville will take on a Chanute team who lost to Mulvane in week one 24-12. Coach O'Connor says Chanute is always a tough matchup.

As Coffeyville travels to Chanute catch all the action on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF, with pregame at 6:30pm and kickoff at 7:00pm.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks are looking to continue their strong start to the season as they take on rival Cherryvale on the road in a Tri-Valley League Week 2 showdown.

Neodesha is coming off a dominant Week 1 win over Galena, as the offense scored four touchdowns in the first half while the defense kept the Bulldogs out of the end zone.

Coach West says he was proud of how his team responded to adversity, not only with the recent unrelenting heat, but also on defense, as the Bluestreaks stalled out several Galena drives and kept the Bulldogs from gaining much confidence offensively. 

West knows rivalry games bring out the best in both teams and says the Bluestreaks will need to match Cherryvale’s intensity and physicality when the two teams meet Friday night. 

Neodesha snapped an eight-game losing streak to Cherryvale last year with a 33-6 win in Week 1, and the Bluestreaks will look to extend their own winning streak Friday night against a familiar opponent.

The Cherryvale Chargers are preparing for a rivalry clash with Neodesha tomorrow, with head coach Harry Hester looking to build on his team’s strong Week 1 performance.

Cherryvale is coming off a season-opening victory over Fredonia, taking control early with a bruising opening touchdown drive led by the offensive line that helped set the tone for the game.

The Chargers took a 30-0 lead into halftime, putting together a scoring drive late in the half with limited time on the clock. Hester praised his team’s adaptability and retention of the playbook in Year 2 of his second stint as the Chargers’ head coach. 

Coming into the game, Hester knows the Bluestreaks will have a strong defensive scheme in place and says his team will need good discipline and communication to break through.

After dropping their first game to Neodesha since 2015 last year, Cherryvale will look to get back on top of the rivalry and start the season 2-0 for the first time since 2016.

The K-State Wildcats are preparing for their Week 2 matchup with Washington State under first-year head coach Collin Klein after opening the season with a lopsided win over Nicholls State. 

Not much went wrong for the Wildcats in their season-opening victory, but they’ll face much stiffer competition against a Cougars team that trailed No.17 Washington by just three points with 10 minutes left in Week 1.

Klein was proud of how his players performed last Saturday, emphasizing the offense’s third-down efficiency, but says there are still a few things to clean up, especially in the secondary. 

The Cougars are coming off a 24-10 loss to the Huskies, and Klein says the toughness of Washington State’s quarterback, Caden Pinnick, will be something the Wildcats have to account for in their game plan. 

The Wildcats will look to start the year 2-0 and get off to a fast start in non-conference play before Big 12 action begins. Pregame coverage starts at 10 a.m., with kickoff set for 11 this Saturday on the Mighty 690.

Sedan looks to bounce back after a week one loss to Central 40-26.

Head Coach Mick Holt says the team faced adversity before they even kicked off the first game. The Blue Devils have a tough week two matchup taking on Cedarvale/Dexter who is coming off a week one win against West Elk 54-8.

Coach Holt says the Spartans are full of talent. The Blue Devils return home next week to face rival West Elk for Homecoming.

Labette County starts the season 1-0 with a shutout 36-0 victory over county rival Parsons.

Labette County is coming off a 9-2 season and have a target on their back for this season. The Grizzlies are replacing a lot of talent that graduated last season. Head Coach Bradley Argabright says he was impressed with how the underclassmen played on Friday night.

The Grizzlies will take on Frontenac for their Week 2 matchup at home. The Raiders also started their season 1-0 with a 15-13 win over Baxter Springs. Coach Argabright says even though Frontenac is a smaller school at 3A he knows how talented they are as a program.

Labette is looking for their 10^th straight regular season home win and they have not lost at home in the regular season under Coach Argabright. They are 10-2 in their last 12 home games with the two losses coming in the playoffs to Bishop Miege.

The West Elk Patriots are looking ahead to their Week 2 matchup with the Udall Eagles after dropping their season opener at home to Cedar Vale, with second-year head coach Ian Denton looking to get his team back on track.

The Patriots and Eagles met last year in Week 3, with West Elk coming away with a comfortable 44-8 victory as the Patriots held Udall to just one touchdown while their offense found its groove.

Even with last year’s result in their favor, Denton isn’t putting much weight on the history between the two teams and says this week is about focusing on themselves.

After scoring eight points in the opener, Denton says the Patriots need to improve in the red zone and do a better job of finishing drives against Udall.

The Patriots will look to even their record in Week 2 with the district matchup coming during West Elk’s homecoming week.

The Caney Valley Bullpups are looking to start 2-0 for the second straight season, with head coach Criss Davis and his team preparing for their Week 2 matchup against Fredonia.

The Bullpups picked up a commanding road win over Eureka last week, scoring three touchdowns within the first four minutes of the game.

Caney Valley will look to keep the offense rolling in Week 2 when the Bullpups host Fredonia. Davis praised his defense but says there’s still room for improvement, particularly in the passing game and with tackling.

The Kansas Jayhawks are two days away from a big early-season test against the 23rd-ranked Missouri Tigers in a Border War at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium.

Both teams are coming off season-opening victories, with the Jayhawks looking for revenge after falling to Missouri 42-31 in Columbia last season.

Leipold felt good about his team coming off the Week 1 win over Long Island, pointing to the efficiency of the offense and the consistency the Jayhawks showed throughout the game.

The Missouri-Kansas rivalry dates back to 1891 and was on a 14-year hiatus before last season’s matchup renewed the heated rivalry. Leipold says the Jayhawks will have to be at their best with a strong Missouri team coming to Lawrence.

The Erie Red Devils played their first-ever 8-man football game Friday night against the Cair Paravel Lions, falling 46-0 as head coach David Pitts begins to adapt to a new format.

With enrollment numbers leading Erie to make the move to 8-man football this year, the Red Devils are adjusting to a game with three fewer players on the field.

The Red Devils started on solid ground, trailing just 8-0 after the first quarter, and their offense put them in position to score but missed out on finding the end zone. Pitts says he liked what he saw from his team settling in before an injury to running back Quincy Brown took some of the momentum away.

Pitts says the Red Devils showed some fight after falling behind by a few scores, but he knows they’ll need to become more aggressive moving forward.

The Red Devils will face Pleasanton this Friday, as the Blue Jays are coming off a 38-30 win over St. Paul. Pitts will look to secure his first 8-man victory in a district matchup on the road.

The Fredonia Yellowjackets opened the 2026 season Friday night with a 36-16 loss to Cherryvale, giving head coach Lucus Lanning his first game at the helm against his former team.

Lanning served as an assistant for Cherryvale in 2025 before taking over as Fredonia’s head coach this season, giving him a unique matchup in his head-coaching debut.

The Yellowjackets fell behind early after Cherryvale opened with a touchdown drive, while a combination of turnovers and penalties hurt Fredonia in the first half. After spending the offseason learning a new playbook, Lanning says he liked how well his players grasped the majority of the offense once they finally got to put the new schemes into action.

Lanning also highlighted two players who had strong games on both sides of the ball and says conditioning will be important as Fredonia’s players take on heavy workloads while playing both ways.

The Yellowjackets will face Caney Valley this Friday, with the Bullpups coming off a 58-0 win over Eureka. Lanning will look for his first win as Fredonia’s head coach on the road against another tough opponent.

The Kansas women’s soccer team is in the midst of an eight-day break after playing seven games to open the season, with the Jayhawks sitting at 5-2.

Kansas is coming off a 3-0 non-conference win over Kansas City, giving the Jayhawks some momentum as they head into the final stretch of non-conference play.

With a few key players dealing with minor injuries, head coach Nate Lie says the Jayhawks have done a good job putting themselves in position to score but need to be more decisive with their finishing, especially with Big 12 play approaching.

The Jayhawks will use the extended break to recover and prepare for the challenges ahead as they get closer to conference play. KU will return to action on the road against Saint Louis, a team that knocked Kansas out of the tournament two years ago, while also looking for its first road win against the Billikens.

The Cherryvale Chargers opened the 2026 campaign with a 36-16 road win over Fredonia, giving head coach Harry Hester a victory to start the season.

Hester faced one of his former assistants in Lucus Lanning, who took over as the Yellowjackets’ head coach this year. Lanning is also a Cherryvale alumnus who played under Hester back when he was an assistant with the Chargers. 

Cherryvale opened with a 13-play scoring drive that ended in a touchdown, using a balanced attack as both teams finally got the chance to compete against someone other than themselves. Leading up to the matchup, Hester says there was a buzz around his team as they were eager to get out on the gridiron. 

The win moves Hester to 1-0 on the season and ties him with the most coaching wins in Cherryvale history at 76. Hester will look to break that mark next week when the Chargers host Neodesha.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks opened the season with a convincing 35-0 road win over Galena, giving head coach Nathan West another opening-week victory.

The Bluestreaks scored 28 points in the first half and cruised the rest of the way, putting together a strong performance in the first action of their campaign.

Coming into the game, West saw his team was ready to go after two weeks of practices and scrimmages, and he says the Bluestreaks were excited and prepared for their first real test of the season.

Neodesha will continue its two-game road trip next week when the Bluestreaks travel to Cherryvale for a matchup with the Chargers, looking to spoil Cherryvale’s home opener and Hester’s chance to become the winningest coach in the Chargers' program history.

The Kansas State Wildcats opened the 2026 season in dominant fashion, rolling past Nicholls State 71-3 in Manhattan Friday night. It’s the most points K-State has scored in a football game since 2000.

The win gives first-year head coach Collin Klein his first victory at the helm after playing quarterback for the Wildcats from 2008 to 2012, providing K-State with strong momentum heading into Week 2.

Quarterback Avery Johnson threw three touchdown passes, while six different players added rushing scores as the Wildcats found the end zone in a variety of ways. Klein praised his team and the atmosphere surrounding his first home game as head coach. 

K-State moves to 1-0 on the season and will host Washington State this Saturday, as Klein and the Purple and White will look for win No. 2. Pregame coverage begins at 10:00 a.m., with kickoff set for 11:00 a.m. on the Mighty 690. 

The Kansas Jayhawks rolled past Long Island 51-6 at home Friday, using a 24-point second quarter to pull away and open the season with a win, continuing the Jayhawks’ streak of opening-season victories under sixth-year head coach Lance Leipold.

The Kansas defense held the Sharks to just two field goals, while quarterback Isaiah Marshall, running back Yasin Willis and receiver Nic McMillan all turned in strong performances.

Marshall, who won the quarterback role during fall camp, threw for two touchdowns, while McMillan hauled in 130 yards through the air and Willis plowed in for two rushing scores of his own.

Leipold says he was pleased with how his players competed.  

The Jayhawks will stay home this Friday for a big matchup against hated border rival Missouri, which enters the game ranked in the AP Top 25. Pregame coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. on Classic Hits 104.1.

The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens jumped out to a 14-0 lead against No. 1 Iowa Western Saturday morning, but the Reivers rallied to force overtime before winning 27-24 on a 34-yard field goal from Ryan Bendezu.

Coffeyville opened the scoring on a 23-yard touchdown pass from John Nicholas to Tyler Jackson on fourth-and-2, then extended the lead early in the second quarter when Nicholas found Jayden Howard for a 28-yard touchdown. Iowa Western answered with 10 straight points before halftime, cutting the Ravens’ lead to 14-10.

The teams traded scores throughout the second half, with Nicholas connecting with Diesel Solari for a 29-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 24. Both offenses stalled over the final 9:41, sending the game to overtime.

Nicholas was intercepted on Coffeyville’s third play of overtime, giving Iowa Western a chance to win. After the Reivers appeared to fumble on third down, Coffeyville safety Hezekiah Jones scooped up the loose ball and returned it for what appeared to be a game-winning touchdown, but the play was reviewed and ruled a dead ball after quarterback Maealiuaki Smith gave himself up, setting up Bendezu’s game-winning field goal.

The loss drops Coffeyville to 0-2 on the season, with the Red Ravens set to travel to Independence next Saturday for a 5 p.m. kickoff. Pregame coverage begins at 4:30 on US 98.

Criss Davis started his 41st year as the head coach of the Bullpups with a dominant win Friday night, as Caney Valley cruised past Eureka 58-0 on the road in a 2A Tri-Valley showdown.

The Bullpups opened the scoring on their first defensive possession, with Drake Roberds picking off Eureka quarterback Tate Scott and returning it 60 yards for a touchdown. After a Eureka punt on the ensuing possession, Traxcyn Garton then scored on Caney Valley’s first offensive snap, taking it 42 yards to the end zone.

Garton added a 47-yard punt return later in the first quarter, giving him two touchdowns on the night and putting the Bullpups up 24-0 with 8:01 left in the opening frame. Caney Valley added four more scores before halftime, including a 12-yard fumble return by Gabe Pierce, to take a 52-0 lead into the break.

The Caney Valley defense bombarded the Tornado offense, only giving up 1 first down through the first two quarters, as they stonewalled the Eureka run and pass game, ending the game with two interceptions. 

Quarterback Layne Denny added a one-yard touchdown pass to Garton late in the fourth quarter, giving Garton his third score of the night. Davis then turned to his underclassmen with a running clock to close out the 58-0 victory.

The win moves Caney Valley to 1-0 on the season, with the Bullpups set to host Fredonia next week for their home opener.

Field Kindley falls in first game of the season 45-7 to Pittsburg.

Turnovers were too much for the Nado to overcome, with an interception and three fumbles.  The lone Nado touchdown came on a trick play and WR pass from Kobi Kirk to Carsten Voss for a 59 yard touchdown

The Field Kindley Tornado will take on the Pittsburg Dragons in its home opener tonight at 7, with new head coach Mike O’Connor set for his first game at the helm.

Field Kindley is coming off a tough 2025 season, but will look to put that record in the rearview mirror with a new coach and a fresh mindset.

Many Tornado players saw varsity action as freshmen last season, and with that experience under their belts, O’Connor will look to them to take the next step. He says several of those players have also shown strong leadership.

O’Connor says Pittsburg is a disciplined team that makes very few mistakes, so he’s put an emphasis on the fundamentals, particularly blocking and tackling.

Field Kindley will look to start the season with a win, while O’Connor looks to pick up his first victory as a head coach tonight.

The Caney Valley Bullpups open the season tonight against Eureka in a Tri-Valley showdown, with head coach Criss Davis entering his 41st year at the helm. Game time has been moved back to 7:30 due to the heat.

The Bullpups went undefeated in the Tri-Valley last year, with Eureka finishing 3-1 to miss out on the league crown. The winner tonight will put themselves in a favorable position to start the season.

Davis wants his team to be able to throw the football more, and the Bullpups have worked on that throughout the offseason and during last week’s jamboree. Davis runs a wishbone offense, but he says being able to air it out will be important this season.

The track record favors Caney Valley, as the Bullpups haven’t lost to Eureka since 2002 and have won 21 straight matchups. Davis says Eureka likes to spread the field offensively, so his defense will have to be physical up front.

Heat has been a factor across Kansas to start the football season, and that will be something to watch tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 7 on US 98, with kickoff at 7:30, as high school football returns to Southeast Kansas.

The Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens will look to rebound from an opening-season road loss to border rival NEO when they take on Iowa Western in their home opener Saturday.

Running back Diesel Solari had several solid punt returns to set Coffeyville up with good field position, while quarterback John Nicholas and receiver Tyler Jackson connected for two scores against the Golden Norsemen. All three will look to make an impact against the Reivers.

Iowa Western is coming off a 71-0 victory over Highland in its season opener, and head coach Nick Dobler says limiting big plays and playing physical football will be key for the Red Ravens against the Reivers.

Dobler spent his first few years with the Red Ravens as the defensive coordinator and made it a staple of Coffeyville’s identity. The Red Ravens forced a fumble in last week’s game, and Dobler says his team is ready to get back on the field and show out in front of Red Raven Nation at home.

Saturday’s game has been moved from a 1 p.m. start to an 10 a.m. start due to the heat, with pregame coverage beginning at 9:30 on US 98 as CCC looks to defeat the reigning NJCAA champions.

Field Kindley football gets ready for their week one match with a new head coach.

The Nado are taking on Pittsburg tomorrow night with Mike O'Connor now serving as the head coach. O'Connor, who is also Coffeyville's Fire Chief, says there are some similarities in the two roles.

Coffeyville hasn't faced Pittsburg since 2015. The Dragons have won at least the 12 games in a row including the last matchup 57-14. O'Connor says he knows the rivalry well.

After finishing last season 0-8, the Nado are looking to start the season strong against Pittsburg. You can catch tomorrow's game on Sonshine 98.9, pregame at 6:30pm and kickoff at 7:00pm.

The South Coffeyville Lions already have a game in the books after opening the season with a Week 0 non-district matchup against Life Christian, as Rich Giesen leads the program in his second year. 

The Lions hit the road for their opener and found themselves down 18-8 at halftime. South Coffeyville cut the deficit to one possession in the fourth quarter at 24-16, but Life Christian pulled away late for a 38-24 victory.

Before the season, Giesen highlighted several players he expected to be key pieces for the Lions, including some in the trenches and a running back tandem.

Giesen has more than four decades of coaching experience, and he says his passion for the game remains strong, especially with the support he continues to receive from the South Coffeyville school and community.

The Lions will have this week off before returning to action next Friday, when they host Claremore Christian, looking to even their record at 1-1.

The Labette County Grizzlies are preparing for their season-opening home matchup with Parsons, with head coach Bradley Argabright guiding the program. 

The Grizzlies opened their season on the road against Parsons last year, using a shutout first half and an 18-point halftime lead to cruise to a 26-6 victory.

Spirits and hopes are high in Labette County, especially with plenty of returning pieces for Argabright, but he says he still feels the Grizzlies have more to give.

To accomplish their goals, including winning a league title, Argabright says stringing together strong practices and continuing to build chemistry as a team will be key for the Grizzlies.

This will be the fifth consecutive year Labette County and Parsons have met during the regular season, with the Grizzlies looking for their third straight win against the Vikings.

The 16th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks are hitting the road for the Lipscomb Tournament, opening against the host Bisons in Nashville today.

The Jayhawks opened their season last weekend against two top-five teams in Pitt and Stanford, dropping both matches in hard-fought four-set battles.

KU will look to bounce back today with plenty of new faces on the roster, as head coach Matt Ulmer brought in eight newcomers, including two transfers and six recruits. Ulmer says staying true to who he is helped the team buy in and want to be Jayhawks.

Ulmer has also praised his team’s hard work and commitment, and says those qualities helped the Jayhawks make a deep tournament run last season.

The Jayhawks will look for their first win of the season today against Lipscomb at 6 p.m., before facing Florida State Friday at 3 p.m.

The Neodesha Bluestreaks will open their season against Galena, with head coach Nathan West preparing his team for another campaign.

Neodesha got off to a quick pace last season, winning four of its first five games, and will look for another strong beginning to put itself in a good position early.
 

Coming into this year, West says there are always tweaks and improvements to be made week to week, but the continued growth of his team has stood out to him.
 

West is also bringing back a coaching staff that has remained unchanged for the past three years, and he says they have worked to put together strategies and play calls that fit the strengths of his athletes.

Neodesha will hit the road to open its campaign against the Bulldogs, looking to once again get off to a fast start.

The Erie Red Devils are just two days away from opening their first-ever 8-man football season against Cair Paravel at 7 p.m. Friday, with head coach David Pitts preparing for a new challenge.

It’s been a unique offseason for Pitts, who has never coached 8-man football before, with all of his previous experience coming in the 11-man game.

Over the past two seasons, Pitts has relied on plenty of young players to step into meaningful roles, and he says that experience has given the Red Devils confidence heading into a new season.
 

Eight-man football is typically faster-paced and higher-scoring than 11-man, forcing Pitts to make some adjustments after most of his coaching career as a defensive coordinator. Pitts says he’ll look to use the speed of his defense to combat opposing offenses.
 

The Red Devils will hit the road for their season opener Friday night against the Lions, looking for their first opening-night win since 2021.

The Kansas Jayhawks will open their season Friday night at home against Long Island University, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. on Classic Hits 104.1.

Lance Leipold is entering his sixth year as head coach of the Crimson and Blue and will look to get the Jayhawks back to a bowl game after back-to-back appearances in 2022 and 2023.

Kansas had a quarterback competition throughout the preseason after losing longtime starter Jalon Daniels to the NFL, with Leipold recently naming Isaiah Marshall the starter over Cole Ballard and Chase Jenkins. Leipold says all three quarterbacks bring plenty to the table.

Depth will be another strength for Kansas this season, with Leipold confident in the roster at several positions as long as the Jayhawks can stay healthy.

Kansas will look to open the season with a win, something the Jayhawks have done in each of Leipold’s first five years, when they host the Sharks Friday night. Pregame coverage begins at 5:30 p.m. on Classic Hits 104.1.

The West Elk Patriots are gearing up for a Week 1 matchup against Cedar Vale, with head coach Ian Denton entering his second year at the helm.
 

The Patriots faced the Spartans in Week 5 last season, falling 54-0, and they’ll get another shot at Cedar Vale when the two teams meet again this Friday.
 

Denton says he's making some changes to how he runs practice as the season progresses, especially after dealing with injuries last year and having a smaller roster this season.

Along with those changes, Denton has given his team the EAT mantra — effort, attitude and toughness. Denton says those three values will be a point of emphasis for the Patriots throughout the season.
 

West Elk will host Cedar Vale Friday night with kickoff set for 7 p.m. and a chance for an opening-season win.
 

Fredonia head coach Lucus Lanning is preparing for his first game as the Yellowjackets’ head coach after previously serving as an assistant at Cherryvale.

The Yellowjackets will host the Chargers in a Week 1 matchup, giving Lanning an early test against a team and coaching staff he knows well from his time with the Chargers.

Like any first-year head coach, Lanning has had plenty of adjustments to make, but he says strong support from his coaching staff and the hard work of his players have helped make the transition smoother.
 

Lanning has also emphasized keeping things simple, and he says using straightforward terminology and a playbook that allows his players to play fast without overthinking before the snap will be important.
 

It should be an intriguing local matchup Friday night, with Lanning looking to start his first season at Fredonia with a win against his former team.

K-State football will open its season Saturday as the Wildcats host Nicholls, with kickoff set for 6 p.m. on the Mighty 690.

The Wildcats are under new leadership, but a familiar face, as former star quarterback Collin Klein takes over the reins in 2026. Klein spent nine seasons as a K-State assistant, including two as offensive coordinator, after playing quarterback from 2008 through 2012.

Klein will have senior quarterback Avery Johnson back for his fourth year, with 27 career starts under his belt. Klein has praised Johnson’s attitude and composed demeanor as the Wildcats prepare for Week 1.
 

While transition years in college football can come with a learning curve, Klein has the advantage of already spending more than a decade around the program, and he says building relationships with his players became a priority when he took over.
 

After four consecutive seasons of eight wins or more, K-State went 6-6 last year and missed out on a bowl game. The Wildcats will look to bounce back as the Collin Klein era begins Saturday night.
