Following a season-opening loss to Trinity Valley, the Pirates scored 51 points in a bounce back win over Ellsworth, posting 488 yards of total offense, with five passing touchdowns.

Butler has showcased a high-flying offense, scoring 14 touchdowns in their first two games played. The Grizzlies also have the conference's top-rated defense thus far this season.

Chiefs Come Up Short in Super Bowl Rematch

Revenge was not in the cards for the Kansas City Chiefs, who drop a close 20-17 game to the Philadelphia Eagles, and fall to 0-2 for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era.

Unlike the Super Bowl in February, when Philadelphia raced out to a 34-0 lead, the rematch was a close defensive battle the entire way. After not calling a single blitz during the Super Bowl, the Eagles blitzed Mahomes 12 times in the game, resulting in seven pressures, one sack, and an interception.

The key moment of the game was in the fourth quarter with Kansas City down three, when a Mahomes pass to Travis Kelce deflected off his hands, and was intercepted by rookie safety Andrew Mukuba.

Kansas City has lost three straight games, and starts 0-2 for the first time since the 2014 season. Additionally, for the first time in nearly five years, the team is not the favorites to win the division, with the Chargers taking that title last night.

The Chiefs will travel to East Rutherford, New Jersey, in search of their first win, when they battle the New York Giants on Sunday Night Football.

Pair of Chanute Stars Named Taco John's Athlete of Month

A pair of Chanute Blue Comet star athletes are the Taco John's Athletes of the Month for September.

Ella Guernsey is the female athlete of the month, starting the tennis season 8-0. Ella is a senior and has defeated numerous high-ranked opponents already this season.

The male athlete of the month is football player Gage Cummings, who helped the Blue Comets to a Week 1 victory over Augusta, with two interceptions in the contest. Gage is also a senior, and has been a crucial part of the Blue Comets' defense for the past two seasons.

Taco John's Chanute is proud to sponsor the Athlete of the Month, which is awarded to the best of area athletic accomplishments each month on the Mighty 690.

Bullpups Win Convincingly in Erie

The Bullpups led from beginning to end as they defeated the Erie Red Devils 52-6 in Week 2 football action last night.

Austin Freisberg added a 55-yard interception return for a TD, and freshmen Garrett Eytcheson added a long touchdown run in the 4th quarter. Layne Denny connected with fellow junior Drake Roberds for several completions, including a touchdown in the win.

Erie's only score came in the 2nd quarter, when sophomore receiver Quincy Brown scored on an 89-yard touchdown catch.

Caney improved to 2-0 on the season, while Erie falls to 0-2. Erie travels to Humboldt next Friday, while Caney takes on Neodesha in homecoming.

Eureka Offense Races to 2-0 Start

The Eureka Tornadoes used explosive plays to their advantage, racing away from the Fredonia Yellowjackets 44-14.

Senior quarterback Payton Hare was the star, scoring five total touchdowns, including four rushing scores. Both TJ Mills and Christian Andrews scored touchdowns as well.

Fredonia would score late in the first half on a 26-yard touchdown to Aiden Staten, and in the third quarter on an 18-yard run by Kayson Farr.

Eureka improves to 2-0 with one of the conference's most dangerous offenses, and will host Cherryvale next Friday night.

Nado Fall to Chanute

Field Kindley falls to 0-2 on the season with a 55-0 loss to Chanute.

Chanute controlled the game from the start scoring on every offensive possession in the first half and leading 42-0 at halftime.

Coffeyville struggled on both sides of the ball giving up over 340 yards on 10 yards a play. The Nado had more penalty yards, 85, than offensive yards, 69.

The Nado return home to face Emporia.

Chiefs Prepare for Super Bowl Rematch

A Super Bowl rematch is on the table in Kansas City, with the Chiefs hosting the Philadelphia Eagles at GEHA Field at Arrowhead.

It's the first meeting for the two sides since February, when the Eagles raced out to a 24-0 lead, and won Super Bowl LIX 40-22.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes says the Eagles defense is one of the league's very best.

Kansas City has been criticized recently for a lack of explosiveness on the offensive side of the ball, particularly with Rashee Rice suspended and Xavier Worthy nursing a shoulder injury. Mahomes says he's looking to take more shots down the field.

Coverage of Chiefs and Eagles begins Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

Bullpups Look To Build On Week One Success in Trip to Erie

The Caney Valley Bullpups look to stay undefeated tonight as they travel to Erie to take on the Red Devils in district football action.

A 38-0 win over Humboldt saw Caney come out and capitalize from the first play from scrimmage. Head Coach Criss Davis says the play started rough, but ended well.

With a tradition of big linemen and a similar style of play to the Pups, Davis says the key to victory for Caney tonight is knowing your role.

Week 2 brings the Eureka Tornadoes to town, a team with athleticism and leadership across the roster. Fredonia Head Coach Marc Svaty says Eureka is a tough team to match up with.

The Yellowjacket defense settled in after allowing an early score in the season opener. Svaty says the team will need to execute at a high level tonight.

Red Raven football is on a bye week, as they prepare for a road matchup with the Garden City Broncbusters next Saturday night.

The Ravens are hoping to have a short memory, following a 21-14 overtime loss to Cisco in the season opener. CCC had opportunities to win in regulation, but costly penalties and stalled drives hurt the Ravens in the end.

Head Coach Nick Dobler says the coaching staff has already begun working on issues of weakness.

Coffeyville dropped an overtime game to Garden City last season, which was eventually overturned to a win following an ineligibility scandal for the Broncbusters. The Ravens haven't defeated Garden City on the field since 2022.

Dobler says the team is determined to play better next weekend.

Coverage of Garden City and Coffeyville begins next Saturday night at 6:30 p.m. CT on US 98.1 FM.

Neodesha Looks for 2-0 Start

The Blue Streaks defeated the Cherryvale Chargers, 33-6, in the season opener last week, with the offense and defense both putting strong perfomances together. The team remains at home this week, welcoming the Bluestem Lions to town in a Tri-Valley League matchup.

Blue Streaks Head Coach Nathan West says the team has to prepare for another tough battle this week.

Kansas State Football Searching for Answers

Kansas State Wildcat football is desperately searching for answers, following one of the most disappointing starts to a season in recent memory.

KSU has dropped one-score games to both Iowa State and Army, and narrowly escaped an upset bid from FCS North Dakota in Week 2. The team has struggled on third downs, as well as losing the time of possession each week.

Junior Avery Johnson has been a bright spot, with over 800 total yards and seven touchdowns thus far this season. He says the team is determined to turn it around.

The Wildcats search for their first Big 12 win of the season, traveling to Tucson to play Arizona Friday night. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. CT on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

Erie Football Gears Up for Home Opener

The Erie Red Devils return home this week, looking for their first victory of the 2025 season.

The team had stretches of strong play and physicality in the opener against Eureka, but big plays from the Tornadoes proved to be the difference.

The Red Devils now prepare for a talented Caney team, who shut out the Humboldt Cubs in a Week 1 victory. Erie Head Coach David Pitts says the Bullpups bring plenty of talent and skill.

Caney is one of the top teams in the Tri-Valley League in 2025, boasting a surplus of upperclassmen that results in one of the most experienced teams in the conference. Pitts says he's emphasizing effort in this week's matchup.

Coverage of Caney and Erie begins Friday night at 6:40 p.m. CT on US 98.1 FM.

South Coffeyville Football Preparing for Tough Battle

Claremore Christian features a high-powered offense, scoring 50+ points in each of their two games thus far this season, and bringing premier speed and athleticism. Giesen says the defense will need to step up this week.

South Coffeyville and Claremore Christian will now play Thursday night in Foyil.

First-year Head Coach Deardin Kelley says the team has done a nice job of buying in this season.

The Cardinals rattled off five-straight wins after an 0-2 start, and recently went 1-1 at a home tournament last week. Kelley says the team still has plenty to work on ahead of the second half.

Labette resumes conference play this week, traveling to Johnson County on Wednesday.

A frustrating opening week for the Kansas City Chiefs got even worse, with young star receiver Xavier Worthy exiting with a shoulder injury.

Worthy left the game in the first quarter after colliding with tight end Travis Kelce, a game which Kansas City lost 27-21. Doctor of Sports Medicine Brian Sutterer says the severity of the injury depends on future imaging.

The Kansas City offense struggled without Worthy on the field, and is already missing Rashee Rice, who is serving a six-game suspension. Sutterer says there are a few ways the injury could play out.

Kansas City will look to get back on track against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Coffeyville found the endzone for the first time in the third quarter, when quarterback Mac Armstrong connected with wide receiver Khris Thomas for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Later in the quarter, safety Da'Mare Williams would return an interception for a 45-yard touchdown to give CCC the lead.

Cisco tied the game on the final play of the third quarter, and would take the lead in overtime, before stopping the Ravens on fourth down to end the game.

Coffeyville finished the day with two missed field goals and 12 team penalties in the loss. The team will have a bye week before traveling to Garden City on September 20th.

Three of the first four drives for the Pups led to touchdowns and 2-point conversions, giving Caney a 24-0 lead at halftime.

The Caney defense stopped the Cubs offense from starting the 2nd half with a score, then the Pup offense extended the lead to 30-0 after a failed 2-point conversion.

After a 6-3 season last year and a first round exit in the playoffs, the Pups turn to a team full of juniors, including quarterback Layne Denny, and backs Jacob McVey, Traxcyn Garton and Raydn Martin. Head Coach Criss Davis says while running the ball is important, so is the passing game.

Davis says the team put in a lot of work in the summer to improve the Bullpups passing attack, adding that the team is ready to implement the added scheme to the offense.

With the first game also being Military Night, Davis says it's a great way to start the season.

Neodesha finished the 2024 season with a 3-6 record, dealing with a combination of injuries and inconsistency on the defensive side of the ball. The team is led by head coach Nathan West, who enters his third season as the team's leader.

Roster size for the Blue Streaks is down a bit from years past. West says, however, that has only helped the team's fight.

Neodesha will be looking for revenge, after suffering a 20-7 defeat to the Chargers in Week 1 last season. West says he anticipates a close battle tomorrow night.

Coverage of Neodesha and Cherryvale begins tomorrow night at 6:45 p.m. CT on Classic Hits 104.1 FM.

Oxford had a successful 2024 season, finishing 7-3 and routing Sedan in their Week 1 matchup. Holt says he wants to see growth from his program in this matchup with the Wildcats.

Despite a winless 2024, the program was able to get many underclassmen valuable reps at the varsity level. Fiscus says the team's senior class has played a lot of football together.

The Bulldog offense had struggles to build consistency last season, and the team is looking for players to emerge and lead on that side of the ball. Fiscus says the focus has been on the program's culture this summer.

Independence opens the season at home against the Columbus Titans on Friday night.

Eureka boasts some of the best senior talent in the area, with speed and athleticism that is among the best in the Tri-Valley League. Pitts says the team will have to limit mistakes on Friday night.

The Tornados handled the Red Devils 28-6 in their matchup last season, with the combination of Erie turnovers and Eureka big plays proving to be costly. Pitts says he wants to see four complete quarters from his football team.

Catcher Carter Jensen has been called up from Triple-A Omaha, and will debut with the team this week. Jensen is a Kansas City native, having played at Park Hill High School before being a third-round pick in the 2022 draft.

Jensen ranks as the organization's No. 2 overall prospect and the No. 88 prospect in Major League Baseball. He has built a reputation for having promising offensive ability, and his power developed in Omaha, where he hit 14 home runs in 43 games.

Across time at both Double-A and Triple-A, Jensen hit .288 with a .404 on-base percentage and an OPS over 1.000. Kansas City sits 2.5 games out of a Wild Card sport as the season enters the final month.

Patriots Kick Off New Era With New Coach

The West Elk Patriots kick off their 2025 season this week, with a new head coach on the sidelines for the first time since 2001.

Ian Denton takes over as Patriots' head coach, following the retirement of Chris Haag after 25 seasons, and 131 wins in Howard. Denton says Haag has taken the program to new heights.

West Elk has been one of the most successful teams in Southeast Kansas in recent years, with four consecutive seasons with eight wins, and back-to-back seasons with nine wins. Denton says the expectations remain the same for the program.

With the exception of two consecutive home games in October, the Patriots alternate home and road games each week this season. Denton says he believes that could be an advantage for the team.

West Elk opens the season on the road Friday night against Argonia/Attica.

Hutchinson Aims to Defend National Title

The Hutchinson Blue Dragons are once again the team to beat in the Jayhawk Conference, coming off an 11-1 season and a national championship game victory.

The Blue Dragons are led by sixth-year head coach Drew Dallas, who is 49-5 in his tenure at Hutch, including 28-3 in conference play.

Despite plenty of convincing wins and strong performances, the Dragons did have a few scares early in the season, as well as a mid-season loss to Butler. Dallas says the team needs to stay out of their own way in 2025.

Hutch lost quite a bit of talent from last season's team, including NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year Waymond Jordan Jr, and starting quarterback Samari Collier. Dallas says, despite this, he likes the talent he has coming back to Hutchinson.

The Blue Dragons open the 2025 season on the road against New Mexico Military on Saturday.

Wildcats Survive Upset Scare

The Kansas State Wildcats narrowly avoided disaster Saturday night, scoring a game-winning touchdown in the final minute to edge the North Dakota Fighting Hawks 38-35.

Avery Johnson finished with 350 total yards of offense and three touchdown passes, while wide receiver Jayce Brown was getting open all game, finishing with 12 catches for 109 yards and a touchdown.

Both teams were nearly identical in penalties, time of possession, and third-down percentage, but KSU did just enough to escape Bill Snyder Family Stadium with their first win of the season.

The Wildcats are 1-1 thus far, and take on the Army Black Knights on Saturday night.

Jayhawk Offense Continues to Roll

The Kansas Jayhawks continue their fast start to the season, scoring 46 points in a blowout win over the Wagner Seashawks.

KU had 631 total yards on the night, with an impressive balance, throwing for 346 yards, and rushing for 285 yards. Senior quarterback Jalon Daniels had 300 total yards and four touchdown passes in the win.

Daniel Hishaw ran for 89 yards and a touchdown, and senior wide receiver Emmanuel Henderson Jr had two touchdown catches on the night.

The Jayhawk defense had another strong performance as well, holding the Seahawks to 143 total yards on 46 plays.

KU is off to a 2-0 start, and face their toughest test yet when they take on the Missouri Tigers on Saturday afternoon.

ICC Bounce Back With Win Over Ellsworth

The Independence Pirates were able to bounce back quickly from a season-opening loss to Trinity Valley, routing the Ellsworth Panthers on the road, 51-14, on Saturday.

ICC was able to take a commanding lead, after scoring 16 points in the first quarter, and 21 points in the second quarter.

Quarterback Keegan Anderson completed 17 of 27 passes, for 298 yards and four touchdown passes. The Pirates were also able to run for 133 yards as a team in the victory.

The ICC defense forced three turnovers, and limited the Panthers to just 58 yards rushing on the afternoon.

The Pirates are 1-1 on the season, and travel to Miami to take on the NEO Norsemen on Saturday night.
