Royals Spring Training Update

The Kansas City Royals are a week into Spring Training games, off to a 4-2 start with promising production from both hitters and pitchers.

Jonathan India has started his KC career red hot, getting four hits in nine at-bats, and reaching base six times in four games played. Nick Loftin, Cavan Biggio, and Maikel Garcia are all also hitting well in the spring.

Top prospect Jac Caglianone has three hits this spring, including a 435-foot home run in a win over the White Sox. Caglianone is the No. 22 rated prospect in all of baseball.

On the pitching side, Daniel Lynch, Cole Ragans, Hunter Harvey, and John Schreiber have all gotten off to strong starts on the mound.

The team will send Ragans, Seth Lugo, and Michael Wacha all to the mound this week.

Chiefs Franchise Tag Offensive Lineman

The Kansas City Chiefs will be keeping one key piece away from potential free agency this offseason.

Pro Bowl guard Trey Smith will receive the franchise tag, which is a one-year contract worth $23.4 million. The tag makes Smith the highest paid guard in the NFL, more than $2 million more than Philadelphia's Landon Dickerson.

Kansas City and Smith will have until July 15th to work out a long-term contract.

Smith is 25 years old and was a sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in the 2021 NFL Draft. He ranked 13th in the NFL in pass block win rate last season, and sixth in run block win rate. He allowed just 1.5 sacks, and committed just two penalties.

Smith has started 67 of a possible 68 games in his four seasons in the NFL, including all 13 postseason games.

Sub state playoffs continue tonight throughout Southeast Kansas, with the Fredonia Yellow Jackets opening the postseason in front of their home crowd.

Fredonia is the No. 5 seed in the sub state backet, and open with the Baxter Springs Lions tonight. Head Coach Dee Barnett says Baxter Springs is a dangerous team.

The Yellow Jackets have been able to host opening round games each of the past four seasons, and look to advance to a potential matchup with the winner of Humboldt and Girard. Barnett says getting the home advantage is crucial at this time of the year.

The Yellow Jackets and Lions tip off at 7 p.m. tonight, with the winner back in action next Wednesday.

Caney's Big 2nd Quarter Leads To Win Against Columbus

The Caney Lady Bullpups used a big 2nd quarter to propel them to a 60-35 victory over Columbus in game one of the 3A Sub State tournament.

Caney outscored the Lady Tigers 18-0 in the 2nd after scoring 18 in the 1st quarter; Caney led 36-12 at halftime.

A big reason for the win was the low post play of Sarah Martinez, who led Caney with 21 points. However, the 3's were falling as well. Elyn Washburn had 18 points including four 3-pointers and Gracie Eden added two 3's. Alex Theiss and Audrey Regis also hit threes for the Lady Bullpups.

Playoff Scenarios for Coffeyville Basketball

Field Kindley basketball wraps up the season tomorrow taking on Labette County. Both teams are looking for their 14th wins of the season, and even with one game left, there's still plenty to be decided.

A win for the Lady Nado or a Baldwin loss would lock up a home game for their first game of sub-state. A loss and a Baldwin win would drop them to the nine seed and make them go on the road for their first sub-state game. While the location is still up for grabs the opponent has been decided. The Lady Nado will face Baldwin, who eliminated them last season.

The Nado boys have locked up a home game for their first sub-state game, but the opponent is still up in the air. A loss and an Atchinson win would move the Nado down to the six seed but a win and an Atchinson loss keeps them as the five seed. As of right now, the Nado would face Paola in their first game of sub-state with a potential rematch with Chanute for the Sub-State Championship.

The Lady Nado tip-off at 6:00pm with the boys to follow on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.  For their sub-state matchups, the Nado boys will play on Tuesday and the Lady Nado play on Wednesday.

Cherryvale Aiming to Slow Down Caney

The Cherryvale Chargers embark on their postseason journey, traveling to Caney to battle a talented Bullpup team.

Cherryvale wrapped up the regular season with a 3-16 record, displaying a lot of underclassmen inxperience in the backcourt. Junior Landon Fox and seniors Carson Ellis and Brycen Raida have been crucial leaders for the program.

The Chargers dropped their only matchup with Caney this year, struggling with the Caney offense and allowing 97 points in the loss. Head Coach Scott John says the Bullpups love to play with tempo.

The Bullpups feature many talented weapons, led by senior Colt Hightower, and also including Layne Denney, Ben Matthews, and Peyton Darden, among others. John says the gameplan will be to slow the game speed down.

Caney and Cherryvale will tip off at 7 p.m. tomorrow night in the first round of sub-state. The Lady Chargers take the court tonight at home against Garnett-Anderson County, with tip off at 7 p.m.

Caney Valley / Columbus Playoff Preview

The winner of this game will take on the winner of the Burlington / Galena game Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.

Pre-game begins around 6:45, with tip-off at 7:00 tonight on Greatest Hits 104.1.

Erie Looking for More Success in Sub State

The defending sub-state champion Erie Red Devils are looking for some more postseason magic, opening the playoffs tonight on the road against Colgan.

Erie wrapped up the regular season 9-11, but were able to secure late season momentum, winning five of their final seven games. Head Coach Braven Born says the team has been more agressive on the interior.

The Red Devils were able to beat Colgan in their sub-state title run last season, winning a thriller 50-48 in the championship game. Born says they can't let the Panthers dictate the speed tonight.

Erie and Colgan tip off tonight at 7:30 p.m. CT in Pittsburg, immediately following the Red Devil girls playing Colgan at 6 p.m. tonight.

In the opening round, the Patriots will host the Herrington Raidroaders, who are 6-14 on the season. Head Coach Dave Miller says it's difficult to scout teams at this time of the year.

The Patriots will tip off tomorrow night at 6 p.m. in Howard.

Neodesha Plans for Playoff Home Game

The Neodesha boys basketball team is preparing for their first home playoff game in a long time.

The team will host the Frontenac Raiders in the opening round of the sub-state playoffs, after finishing with a 12-6 record in the regular season. Head Coach Mitchell Pietz says the Raiders are a very tough opponent.

Despite the recent success from the Lady Streaks, the boys haven't had a home postseason game in years, bringing a unique opportunity to the community for two playoff home matchups. Pietz says the key is going to be to stay composed.

The boys game is Friday night at 7 p.m. at Neodesha High School. The girls team will play host to Fredonia one night earlier, tomorrow night at 7 p.m.

Kelce Expected to Return Next Season

Perhaps the biggest question of the Kansas City Chiefs offseason is the status of tight end Travis Kelce.

There has been plenty of speculation that the 35-year old will retire following the Super Bowl loss, despite having one year remaining on his current contract.

Kelce stated during Super Bowl week he intended to play in 2025, but has been less decisive in the weeks since the game. Both Head Coach Andy Reid and General Manager Brett Veach spoke at the NFL Combine regarding Kelce, and his plans ahead of next season.

Veach says he's confident the tight end will decide to return.

Kelce had career lows in receiving yards and touchdowns last season, but did lead the Chiefs in receptions with 97.

Ravens Host Seward County in Doubleheader

The Red Ravens return to Nellis Hall with less than two weeks remaining until the postseason, hosting the Seward County Saints in doubleheader action.

Head Coach Tony Turner says the team is looking for ways to keep the Saints off the boards.

The men are looking to win their fourth in a row, and stay ahead of Barton for second place in the conference. The Ravens survived the Saints with a Justin Taylor buzzer beater in the first matchup.

Head Coach Jay Herkelman says the team is looking to play more up tempo tonight.

Yankees Revise Facial Hair Policy

The New York Yankees are making a massive change after nearly five decades.

Team owner Hal Steinbrenner announced that the organization will be getting rid of their 49-year old facial hair policy, and will be allowing "well-groomed beards" moving forward.

Since 1976, Yankees players and coaches have been limited to mustaches being the only facial hair allowed, and the policy also included a rule about no hair below the collar.

New closer Devin Williams has sported a full beard for his entire career, and was forced to shave on the first day of workouts last week. Legendary first baseman Don Mattingly was benched for a game in 1981 when he refused to cut his hair.

Steinbrenner adds the main reason for the change is to prevent any player acquisition opportunities being jepordized by the policy, and opening the door for creating the best team possible.

The team has tested themselves with a difficult schedule, having an early season tournament in Paola, and a mid-season tournament in Frontenac. Stepps says the tough schedule prepares the team for big games down the stretch.

Caney Game Postponed, Will Not Be Rescheduled

Tonight's scheduled Caney game against Riverton has been canceled due to the freezing temperatures.

Picollo Receives Extension With Royals

The Kansas City Royals continue to work on extending key pieces of the organization, agreeing to a new deal with General Manager JJ Picollo through the 2030 season.

The deal is a five-year extension, and was announced by the team earlier this week from Spring Training. CEO and Chairman John Sherman says a winning culture begins with strong people at the top.

Picollo was named the team's general manager in 2021, and was elevated to the top position in the front office the following year, when the team parted ways with Dayton Moore. Picollo says it's difficult to be successful without a committed ownership group.

The team also announced they will be picking up the contract option for the 2026 season for Manager Matt Quatraro, with the potential to extend his contract multiple years as well. Quatraro says you have to constantly prove your worth in this sport.

The games will take place at Nellis Hall, with the Lady Ravens to tip off at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow night, and the men to follow at 7:30. Fans will receive free admission to the games, as well as free coffee and hot chocolate to help with the freezing cold temperatures.

Ravens Wrap Up Successful Signing Day

The first step of building another championship caliber team is in the books, as Red Raven football wraps up a successful 2025 Signing Day.

The team is replacing more than 40 players that departed for four-year institutions, and focused on depth on the offensive and defensive lines, secondary, and the quarterback position. Head Coach Nick Dobler says the team also focused on finding local talent.

The most notable local name to sign with the Red Ravens is Field Kindley star running back Aaron Tunstall, who chose CCC over Hutchinson, Butler, and other four-year opportunities. Dobler says Tunstall is a special add for the program.

A portion of the team that are returning or transferred in are beginning workouts and preparing for spring ball, while high school recruits and other players will join in the summer. Dobler says the competition for the 2025 roster begins now.

The Ravens went 9-3 last season, and were co-champions of the KJCCC conference, sharing the title with Hutchinson and Butler.

Leading the Kansas City offense is star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr, and captain catcher Salvador Perez. Perez says the team has enough talent to be the last group standing.

The Royals open their spring training exhibition schedule with the Texas Rangers next Friday.

Head Coach Kelsey Overacker says the team has really embraced a together mentality.

Despite not much senior leadership on the roster, the duo of Kadynce Forman and LilliAnn Whittley have been key components of the team's success. Forman says the group has followed the lead of their talented head coach.

Chiefs Bid for Three Peat Comes Up Short

The quest for history and the first three-peat in NFL history comes up short, as the Kansas City Chiefs fall to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, 40-22.

Struggles on the offensive line were the main theme for Kansas City, as quarterback Patrick Mahomes was sacked six times on the night, while being pressured on nearly 50% of his dropbacks. The team also committed two turnovers, and had seven penalties in the defeat.

Mahomes says the Eagles did a better job of limiting the team miscues.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts got the scoring started in the opening quarter, before Philadelphia would outscore KC 27-6 in the second and third quarters. Mahomes would throw a pair of late touchdown passes to Xavier Worthy and DeAndre Hopkins, but it was too little too late.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid says the sting of a postseason loss never gets easier.

Philadelphia has their second Super Bowl championship in franchise history, joining the 2018 champions that beat Tom Brady and the Patriots. The Chiefs will go into the 2025-26 season not being the reigning champions for the first time in 728 days.
