Ravens Roll in Shortened Opener

The Red Ravens impressed on the football field before the season opener ended early due to weather.

Coffeyville defeated Kansas Wesleyan JV 35-0 in an abbreviated 2024 debut. CCC looked the part, scoring touchdowns on five of six offensive drives, and holding the Coyotes offense scoreless.

Running back Steven Robinson scored a 63 yard touchdown on the first play of the season. Quarterback Joseph Vick also connected with wide receiver Ty Durham for a touchdown in the opening quarter.

Fellow quarterback Carson Creehan also impressed, connecting with tight end Brec Long on a 4th down conversation in the red zone.

The Ravens had plenty of success in all phases on the evening. Head coach Nick Dobler says, however, there are adjustments to be made.

Coffeyville will travel to Texas to battle the Cisco Wranglers next weekend. Dobler says that matchup will be a great test.

Coverage of the Ravens-Wranglers came begins at 6 p.m. CT next Saturday on US 98.

Ravens Open with Kansas Wesleyan JV

Red Raven football kicks off the 2024 regular season tonight, traveling to Salina to battle the Kansas Wesleyan JV Coyotes.

The Ravens are led by first year head coach Nick Dobler, who takes over the program following four seasons as the defensive coordinator. He says he's already received support from a former Red Raven head coach.

CCC returns key leaders on both sides of the ball, with running back Tre Jones, tight end Brec Long, and wide receiver Bryce Bonner among the returners on offense. Defensive lineman Alijah Brown, linebacker Khmari Johnson, and corner Cyler Christmas are a few of the returners on defense.

There will be a new starting quarterback for the Ravens this season. Dobler says, however, there will be two different guys getting snaps tonight.

Coffeyville traveled to Salina last October, winning the game 68-3 in the first ever matchup between the two schools. Coverage of tonight's season opener begins at 5:30 p.m. CT with kickoff at 6 on the home for Red Raven sports, US 98.

Jayhawks Open Season Against Lindenwood

College football season is back in the Sunflower State, with the Kansas Jayhawks kicking off their 2024 season against Lindenwood.

The Jayhawks open the season ranked No. 22 in the nation, and are considered one of the contenders for the Big 12 Conference championship. Head Coach Lance Leipold enters his fourth season at the helm of the program, looking to lead his group to the College Football Playoff.

Quarterback Jalon Daniels is also back and healthy for the team. Leipold says it's a great feeling to watch the QB ready to go.

Daniels missed ten games last season with a back injury, and has missed more than a dozen games the past two seasons. Leipold says the journey for Daniels to return has been a special one.

Coverage of the Jayhawks and Lions begins at 5:30 p.m. CT tonight on Greatest Hits 104.1 FM . Kickoff for the game is scheduled for 7.

Chiefs Sign Smith-Schuster, Release Toney

There were significant changes to the Chiefs wide receiver room during roster cuts.

Former KC wideout Juju Smith-Schuster has re-signed with the organization on a one year deal. Smith-Schuster was released by the Patriots earlier this month after one season. He spent 2022 in Kansas City, collecting 933 receiving yards and winning Super Bowl LVII.

The team has also announced the release of Kadarius Toney, a former Giants first round pick who was acquired in 2022. Toney has highs and lows in Kansas City, having crucial plays in a Super Bowl LVII win over the Eagles, but struggling to make an impact in 2023 and losing favor in the ranks.

Kansas City's Week 1 receiving core currently features seven players, with Rashee Rice, Marquise Brown, Xavier Worthy, Justin Watson, Smith-Schuster, Skyy Moore, and Mecole Hardman currently holding roster spots.

Kansas City opens the season against the Baltimore Ravens on September 5th.

ICC Hires New Women's Basketball Coach

Independence Community College has a new head women's basketball coach.

Shavonda Price has been named the next leader of the Lady Pirates program, replacing the departing Rob Beckmann.

Price spent last season at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and has also served as the head coach at Southeastern Community College in Iowa, and as an assistant at Iowa Western. She says she's excited to experience the competition of the Jayhawk conference.

Price also has playing experience at the collegiate level, spending two seasons at Defiance College in Ohio, before finishing her career at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. She says she enjoys the defensive side of basketball.

The Pirates are coming off a 16-15 season, with wins over top conference teams Butler and Coffeyville, before losing to Garden City in the Region VI tournament.

FULL INTERVIEW w/Shavonda Price

Pirates Volleyball Open Season in Texas

Independence Community College gets the volleyball season started with a tournament this weekend in Dallas, Texas.

The Pirates are looking for momentum to open the 2024 campaign under new head coach Alex Lehocky.

Sophomore defensive specialist Jana Bachmann says the team has been particular with details.

The team is very young, with the roster mostly comprising of freshmen outside of Bachmann, and sophomore setter Valeria Martinez. Martinez says the young outside hitters will need to think quickly at the college level.

With a very new group, Lehocky is hopeful her sophomores can emerge as leaders on the court for the new players. Bachmann says, however, you have to be a leader at all times.

The Pirates open against Ranger College this afternoon, before wrapping up the tournament with a doubleheader tomorrow.

Chiefs Sign Humphrey to Massive Extension

The Kansas City Chiefs have ensured that one of their team leaders is sticking around long term.

Kansas City has agreed to a four year, $72 million extension with offensive lineman Creed Humphrey, with more than $50 million fully guaranteed.

Humphrey is 25 years old, and has been everything the Chiefs could have hoped for when he was drafted in the third round three years ago. He has become an anchor on the KC offensive line, finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting in 2021, as well as earning Pro Bowl appearances in each of the past two seasons.

The deal makes Humphrey the highest paid center in the NFL at $18 million per season, more than $4.5 million per year more than Frank Ragnow, the next closest. Humphrey is now under contract with Kansas City through the 2028 season.

Jayhawks Get Star QB Back

A familiar face will be under center for the Kansas Jayhawks when they open the 2024 season next week.

Quarterback Jalon Daniels has been named the starting quarterback for the team's opener against Lindenwood. He says there are no more injury concerns moving forward.

Daniels missed half of the 2022 season with a shoulder injury, and only played in three games last season, dealing with a nagging back injury.

Head coach Lance Leipold says it's good to have Daniels back in the huddle.

Daniels has starred when on the field, throwing for 2,700 yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 games over the past two seasons. He gets his top weapons back on offense, with receivers Lawrence Arnold and Luke Grimm, and running backs Devin Neal and Daniel Hishaw Jr.

The Jayhawks are one of the conference title contenders in the Big 12, and having Daniels healthy could be the x-factor that sends them to the College Football Playoff.

Cherryvale Sports Led by New Athletic Director

It's a new era for Cherryvale Charger athletics, with the hiring of a new Athletic Director.

Kandra Smith takes over as the head of Charger athletics, replacing the outgoing Rodney Vigil. Smith says the opportunity was one that made sense for her entire family.

Cherryvale has been one of the more consistent high schools in Southeast Kansas in recent years, putting out consistent competitive teams in football, basketball, volleyball, and track. Smith says the competitive spirit of Charger athletes is homegrown.

Smith took over as AD at the beginning of the summer, but still has plenty she wishes to accomplish. She says her primary goal is to add improved facilities for the school's athletes.

Cherryvale will once again be one of the highlighted teams on the KGGF High School Game of the Week, bringing select Charger football and basketball games all season long.

Red Raven Volleyball Eager for Home Opener

We are inside of one week from the first athletic event at Nellis Hall in 2024, and Red Raven volleyball is eager to kick off their campaign.

The Ravens begin the season at home against Oklahoma Wesleyan JV, with an opportunity to earn a home victory to begin the tenure of head coach Kandi Midgett.

Sophomore Ashlyn Nelson says the leadership group has made an emphasis on being available for the newcomers.

Returning at right side hitter is sophomore Daetyn Bogle, a Wichita product. She says the team is already preparing for the speed and skill of the Jayhawk conference.

CCC has shown a blend of skill and athleticism thus far in fall practice. Sophomore Nadazia Simien says the group is ready to compete.

The Lady Raven home opener begins at 6 p.m. on Monday, and will be streamed on the Red Raven Sports Network.

Mahomes Dazzles, Chiefs Fall to Lions

The Chiefs dropped their second preseason game to the Detroit Lions 24-23, but it was one throw by Patrick Mahomes that was the talk of the NFL.

Mahomes threw a ball behind his back to Travis Kelce, a play that resulted in a first down. Mahomes says the play wasn't intentional, and was the result of a bad route.

Kelce gave his side of the story after the game. He says there may have been some miscommunication in the huddle.

The starters played about one quarter for Kansas City in the loss. Former Tulsa star running back Deneric Prince had 47 yards rushing, while first round pick Xavier Worthy caught his first touchdown pass.

The Chiefs wrap up their preseason games with a matchup with the Chicago Bears on Thursday.

Kansas State Names Football Captains

The Kansas State football team has announced their 2024 season captains.

Avery Johnson, Hadley Panzer, Austin Moore, Brendan Mott, Marques Sigle, and Cody Stufflebean will lead the Wildcats into the fall with their eyes on a Big 12 Championship.

Johnson is a sophomore quarterback from Wichita, and is the highest rated QB recruit in Wildcat history. He was the MVP of the Pop-Tarts Bowl, and tied a school record with five rushing touchdowns in a game against Texas Tech.

Panzer is a senior offensive lineman from Lakin, Kansas, and started all 13 games last season. He has over 25 starts in his KSU career.

Moore is a senior linebacker from Louisburg, Kansas, who was second-team All-Big 12 and an honorable mention for Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. He needs 57 solo tackles this season to enter the Top 10 in school history.

Mott is a senior defensive end from Iowa City, Iowa, and was honorable mention All-Conference last season. He has 23 starts with 11 tackles for loss and seven sacks over the past two seasons.

Sigle is a senior safety from Omaha, Nebraska, and a former transfer from North Dakota State. He led the team with 63 tackles last season, and was second on the team with 10 passes defended.

Stufflebean is a senior defensive end from McPherson, Kansas, and has been a key rotational lineman the past two seasons. He had four tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble against Baylor last season.

The Wildcats open the season against Southeast Missouri on August 31st.

Royals Sweep Reds in Dominant Weekend

The Royals are flying high after a dominant weekend in Cincinnati.

Kansas City outscored the Reds 28-3 in a three game massacre, improving their record to 69-55 on the season. Manager Matt Quatraro says it was a complete performance.

The Royals found success on the mound without starts from Seth Lugo or Cole Ragans. Quatraro says Brady Singer was the x-factor in the Sunday victory.

The KC bullpen has also found stablility in recent weeks, locking down crucial wins in a playoff push. Trade deadline acquisition Lucas Erceg has not allowed a run in his first eight games with the team. Quatraro says Erceg has been dominant.

Kansas City returns to Kauffman Stadium tonight to battle the Los Angeles Angels, with coverage beginning at 6:30 tonight on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

Red Raven Football Prepares for Final Scrimmage

Red Raven football will have their final team scrimmage this weekend, in preparation of the season opener.

CCC is eager to improve from the 3-7 season in 2023, and ascend back to the top of the Jayhawk conference in 2024.

The defense has two key returners in the secondary, in cornerback Cyler Christmas, and safety Jayden Sheppard. Sheppard says the defensive backs have been competing with each other well in camp.

On offense, the team returns running back Tre Jones, and tight end Brec Long. Long is a local product who began his high school career at Caney, and later starred at Sedan. He says it's exciting to play for his hometown school.

Sheppard is projected to fill a hybrid role on defense, playing safety, slot cornerback, and even sub linebacker in some formations. He says he's getting help from his teammates to stay ready for all assignments.

The Ravens open the season against Kansas Wesleyan JV on August 29th.

Former Wildcat QB Named Starter at Ohio State

A former Kansas State signal caller has been named the starter for one of the nation's top teams.

Will Howard will be under center for the Ohio State Buckeyes when they open the season against Akron on August 31st.

Buckeye Head Coach Ryan Day says Howard has taken the job and run with it.

Howard holds the Kansas State record with 48 career touchdown passes, and accounted for 67 total scores in his Wildcat career.

He started 28 games at KSU, and helped the Wildcats win the 2022 Big 12 Conference championship.

Lady Raven Basketball Schedule Released

The Lady Raven basketball team moves onto campus this weekend, and the official team schedule for 2024-25 is out.

CCC will open the season hosting a four-team classic, with Butler, NEO, and Connors State all coming to Nellis Hall. The Lady Ravens will open the season with Connors on November 1st, and battle NEO the following day.

Head Coach Tony Turner says it's an opportunity to see quality opponents early.

The Lady Ravens will also sprinkle in local matchups in the non-conference, facing Fort Scott at home, and Labette County on the road.

CCC will host Barton in the final game of the regular season, after coming up short against the Cougars in the playoffs last season. Turner says the home court advantage will play a big role.

With seven weeks remaining until the first team scrimmage, the Ravens will get to work quickly. Turner says it's important to add team chemistry as soon as possible.

Defending national champion Cowley received 10 of 11 first-place votes, and is projected to repeat as league champions. Johnson County is predicted 2nd, KCK is 3rd, Neosho 4th, and Allen County rounds out the Top 5.

The Ravens went 22-14 last season, including a 5-5 record in conference play. The team was dominant at Nellis Hall, posting a 13-2 home record. CCC opens at home against Oklahoma Wesleyan JV on August 26th.

CCC is projected to finish No. 7 in the KJCCC Projected Order of Finish for Division 1. The poll is voted on each preseason by the head coaches of each KJCCC school.

Cowley received six of seven first place votes and are projected to win the conference in 2024. Barton is projected 2nd, and Dodge City and KCK are tied for 3rd.

The Red Ravens went 7-8-4 last season, with a 3-7-2 record in conference play. The team earned wins over Garden City and Cowley, and a draw with Barton. The Ravens open their 2024 season against Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on August 23rd.

CCC comes in at No. 6 in the KJCCC Projected Order of Finish for the 2024 season. The poll is voted on each year by the head coaches across the conference.

Cowley received seven of nine first place votes, and slots in atop the preseason rankings. Butler and Hutchinson received the other two first place votes, and are projected 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

CCC went 5-14 in 2023, including 3-13 in conference play. The Lady Ravens did pull off key victories over both Butler and Garden City last season.

The full 2024 schedule can be found HERE.

Red Raven Men's Basketball Release Schedule

The Red Raven men's basketball season is one step closer, with the 2024-25 season schedule officially out.

The Ravens begin the season on November 1st, with a high-profile matchup against Moberly Area in a road tournament. Moberly has made multiple national tournaments in the past decade, and was ranked in the National Top 15 last season.

Head Coach Jay Herkelman says it's a great early season test for his guys.

CCC will have home non-conference games against Allen County, NEO, and Southwestern JV. The team begins conference play on the road against Fort Hays Tech NW and Colby.

Herkelman says it's nice to get the longest road trip of the season over early.

Other games of note include a home game against Independence on November 26th, a trip to Hutchinson on December 4th, and sophomore day against the Barton Cougars on March 3rd.

KGGF will reveal the Lady Raven basketball schedule tomorrow, along with comments from Head Coach Tony Turner. The full men's basketball schedule can be found HERE.

ICC Volleyball Playing in Preseason Scrimmages

The JUCO volleyball regular season begins in just over a week, and the Independence Pirates are planning for a competitive season.

The Pirates are led by first year head coach Alex Lehocky, and return key sophomores at setter and defensive specialist.

Lehocky says this group has impressed her with their effort so far.

ICC will participate in a trio of scrimmages this weekend at Butler Community College. Lehocky says she is looking for the team to improve their mental toughness during games.

The Pirates open the regular season on August 23rd in Dallas, Texas. KGGF will speak with sophomores from the Pirates volleyball team next week.

Raven Football Building Identity

There are less than two weeks remaining until the official start of football in the KJCCC, and the new look Red Ravens are hard at work.

The team is preparing for the season opener on the 29th, when CCC travels to Salina for a matchup with Kansas Wesleyan JV.

Offensive coordinator Angel Ortiz says he is looking for players that embrace the physical brand of football the Ravens are known for.

Coffeyville has plenty of new faces, with only a few returners on each side of the ball. Associate head coach Rico Cherico says the coaches are focused on getting the players to play as a unit.

The Ravens have a team scrimmage this weekend, in one of their final tune up opportunities before the opener. Ortiz says he's looking for players to stand out on the field.

KGGF will hear from returning tight end Brec Long and returning safety Jayden Sheppard later this week, as the team takes the field for the final scrimmage of preseason.

Wildcats, Jayhawks Ranked in Preseason Polls

The preseason hype surrounding the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats has reached the national level.

Both teams are ranked in the preseason AP Top 25, which was released yesterday. The Wildcats enter the season ranked #18, while the Jayhawks are not far behind at #22.

Additionally in the Big 12, Utah enters the season at #12, Oklahoma State slots in at #17, and Arizona makes their conference debut at #21.

#1 Georgia, #2 Ohio State, #3 Oregon, #4 Texas, #5 Alabama, #6 Ole Miss, #7 Notre Dame, #8 Penn State, #9 Michigan, and #10 Florida State make up the preseason Top 10.

Kansas State kicks off on August 29th against Southeast Missouri, while Kansas opens the season against Lindenwood on August 31st.

Chiefs Receiver Injured in Preseason Loss

The Chiefs dropped their preseason opener to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but it wasn't the score that was the takeaway from the weekend.

New Kansas City wide receiver Marquese "Hollywood" Brown exited the game after his first catch with a shoulder injury, and would not return. He was hospitalized overnight in Jacksonville, and later diagnosed with a dislocation of the sternoclavicular joint, which is when the clavicle dislocates into the sternum.

Head coach Andy Reid says Brown will be out a while, but there is a bit of good news.

Brown was acquired in the offseason, after time with the Baltimore Ravens and Arizona Cardinals. The receiver was a first round pick in 2019 out of the University of Oklahoma.

Reid says with Brown sidelined, other receivers will need to step up.

The injury is identical to the one suffered by former Chiefs star Tyreek Hill in 2019, when Hill missed four games. Kansas City opens the season on September 5th against the Baltimore Ravens, with Brown's status for the game uncertain.

NW Kansas Tech to Rebrand as Fort Hays Tech NW

One of the schools in the KJCCC is undergoing major changes to their name and branding.

Northwest Kansas Tech has officially rebranded to Fort Hays Tech Northwest, following the approval of a Change of Control application filed earlier this year. Under the agreement, Fort Hays State University, Northwest Kansas Technical College, and North Central Kansas Technical College, will unite under the Fort Hays banner to better serve the region.

Along with the renaming of the university, there will be changes to athletics at the college as well. All 14 teams on the Goodland campus will now be known as the Fort Hays Tech Northwest Tigers, and will change their color scheme to black and gold, moving away from the previous red, black, and white colors.

The school will continue to compete within the NJCAA, as well as maintain their status in both Region VI and the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference.

Nado Football Gearing Up for 2024 Season

High school football is less than a month away, and the Field Kindley Golden Tornado are hard at work in practice.

The Nado are hoping to build off a 6-4 season in 2023, which ended in a second-round playoff loss to Wellington.

The team is led by head coach Deonta Wade, who enters his fifth season at the helm of the program. He says the team is motivated to grow from last season's finish.

Field Kindley does display exciting senior leadership, with running back Aaron Tunstall, quarterback Axel Ernie, wide receiver and defensive back Ke'Shawn Hayes, and offensive tackle Keiton Jones, among others. Wade says the team has been aiming to get faster and stronger this season.

The Nado will participate in the annual Jamboree with Caney and Independence on August 30th, and open the 2024 season against Towanda Circle on September 6th.

Witt Jr Named AL Player of Month

In a year that has been filled with big moments for Bobby Witt Jr, the milestones keep on coming.

The Royals star shortstop was named the American League Player of the Month for July, the first Royal to earn the award since Billy Butler in 2009.

Witt was the best hitter in baseball last month, leading the league with 44 hits, 10 more than the next nearest player. It was the most hits in a month for a Royals player since Johnny Damon in August of 2000.

The team also revealed that Witt's .489 batting average was the second-higest in a month in franchise history. No player in the MLB has recorded 44 hits and a .489 batting average in a single month, since Lou Gehrig in 1930.

Witt and the Royals hold a 1.5 game lead for the final playoff spot in the American League. They begin a series against the St. Louis Cardinals tomorrow night.

Red Raven Volleyball Return to Practice

A new era of Red Raven volleyball has officially begun, with the team back on campus for fall practice.

The program is led by first year head coach Kandi Midgett, who takes over after two seasons as an assistant at Labette Community College. Midgett is replacing Deardin Kelley, who took the head coaching job at Division 2 William Jewell in February.

Sophomore Briona Patterson says playing for Coach Midgett has been great.

The Ravens are looking to continue recent success, following consecutive 20+ win seasons. Sophomore Skylyn Hogan-Turner says the team is off to a strong start in practice.

The returner with the most experience for CCC is sophomore setter Olivia Murphy, who played in 95 sets and 30 matches as a freshman. She says she's been working hard to improve her defense in her sophomore year.

The Ravens have a preseason scrimmage with NEO on August 15th, before opening the 2024 season with home games against Ottawa JV on the 26th, and defending national champion Cowley on the 28th.

Chiefs Sign Kicker to Record Breaking Extension

One of the best kickers in the NFL is staying in Kansas City on a record breaking contract.

Harrison Butker has agreed to a four year extension worth more than $25 million, which is the largest contract ever given to a kicker at more than $6.4 million per year.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter breaks down the details of the extension.

The new contract keeps Butker with the Chiefs through 2028. He finished last season 33-of-35 on field goals, and was a perfect 6-of-6 from beyond 50 yards.

Butker is widely considered one of the clutchest kickers in NFL history, kicking tying or winning field goals against the Bengals, 49ers, and Bills. His career 89.1% conversation rate is second best in league history, only behind Baltimore's Justin Tucker.

KJCCC Preview- Hutchinson

KGGF wraps up the preseason football coverage from Media Day with the Hutchinson Blue Dragons, projected to win the KJCCC conference for the sixth consecutive season.

The Dragons are led by fifth year head coach Drew Dallas, who enters the season with an overall record of 38-4 as a head coach. He says the program is replacing a few coaches from last season.

The Dragons have key returners on both sides of the ball, and display one of the more experienced teams in the conference. Dallas says the team maturity will play a large role this season.

Hutchinson has only lost one conference game in four seasons under Dallas, a season opening loss to Coffeyville in 2021. Dallas says, however, you can't get comfortable in a conference like the Jayhawk.

Hutchinson also returns the co-offensive player of the year in 2023 in quarterback Samari Collier, as well as adding former Highland star receiver Benson Prosper. The Blue Dragons open the season against New Mexico Military Institute on August 29th.

Raven Powerlifters Compete in World Championships

A pair of Red Raven powerlifters recently competed at the World University Powerlifting Championships.

Micah Barron and Nic Flores both took part in the 2024 FISU Championships held in Tartu Estonia from July 23rd through the 27th. More than 40 countries were represented at the Championships.

Both Barron and Flores were able to compete at the World Championships after qualifying for the USA team this past spring at the Collegiate Championships.

Barron will continue his career at Friends University this coming year, while Flores is returning to CCC to compete for the Ravens for another season.

KJCCC Preview- Garden City

KGGF's coverage of KJCCC football continues with the Garden City Broncbusters, projected to finish second in the preseason rankings.

Garden City is led by first year head coach Kiyoshi Harris, following a 5-6 record last season. Harris says the coaching staff was active early in recruiting.

Harris was the KJCCC Coach of the Year in 2019, while leading the Independence Pirates. He says the Broncbusters will be relying heavily on their offensive line.

Another goal for the Broncbusters was to add speed to the skill position players. Harris says the team has a few exciting options at receiver, including an Oklahoma high school star.

Garden City has the #3 ranked transfer portal class in the NJCAA according to Athlinkd.net, only behind Coffeyville in the KJCCC. The Broncbusters open the season on August 31st against Navarro.

Royals Finish Road Trip with Clutch Homer

The Kansas City Royals wrapped up a 6-1 road trip in dramatic fashion.

The team was down 2-0 in the ninth inning, and down to their final out. When losing the series seemed like all but certain, MJ Melendez delivered one of the biggest swings of the season.

Kansas City improves to 63-50 on the season, holding a Wild Card playoff spot by 2.5 games. The team returns to Kauffman Stadium tonight, to begin a series against the Boston Red Sox.

Brady Singer gets the ball for the series opener, with Seth Lugo and Cole Ragans to follow in the series. Boston is the closest team to Kansas City in the playoff chase.

Coverage begins tonight at 6:30 with first pitch at 7:10 on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

Former KState QB Signs with Jets

A former Wildcat star quarterback is heading back to the NFL.

Former KSU and Nebraska signal caller Adrian Martinez has agreed to a training camp contract with the New York Jets.

Martinez signed with the Detroit Lions as an undrafted free agent after the 2023 NFL Draft, but after not making the team after preseason, signed with the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League.

Martinez shined in the UFL, winning the regular season MVP, and finishing first in rushing yards, third in passing yards, and second in passing touchdowns. His 18 total touchdowns also tied for the most in the league.

Martinez and the Stallions would win the UFL Championship game, and set up the former Wildcat for his next opportunity to make it in the NFL.

(KJCC Preview) Butler

The Butler Grizzlies are predicted to finish third this year in the KJCCC preseason football rankings. Even though head coach Bryce Vignery is returning for his third year the helm, there's been a few changes in other coaching positions.

Player wise, the Grizzlies have many key starters returning, including their kicker and punter and All-conference Defensive Tackle Jaden Roper. Vignery says it's important to stay in state to find players.

Vignery says this offseason has been a successful one for the team.

Butler will look to improve upon their 5-5 record last season; they will open against NEO August 31st.

Royals Continue Winning Ways on Road Trip

Vinnie Pasquantino homered twice, Seth Lugo gave up four hits over eight innings and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 7-1 last night.

Bobby Witt Jr. also homered for the Royals, who are 4-0 on their current road trip.

Lugo, who improved to 13-5 on the season, only gave up one run. He is 7-0 with a 1.31 ERA in nine starts against the AL Central this season.

Witt and Pasquantino hit back-to-back homers in the eighth off Brenan Hanifee. It was Pasquantino's first multi-homer game.

The teams play again tonight. It should be a very good pitching matchup, as the Tigers Tarik Skubal, who is 12-3 with a 2.35 ERA, faces Cole Ragans, who is pitching much better than his 7-7 record, 3.37 ERA would indicate. We'll join the games in progress at 6:00 on the Mighty 690 KGGF.

KJCC Football Preview (Highland)

The Highland Scotties are ranked 4th in the preseason football poles of the KJCCC. Under 2nd year head coach DJ Mayo, the Scotties were ranked to finish 7th in last year's preseason poll. After finishing last year with a 6-5 record last season, Mayo says it doesn't really matter where you start.

New Quarterback Gunner Smith is a transfer from UCF. While Mayo is looking forward to seeing the offense on the field, he says the two main components for his team's success is defense and discipline.

Highland will open their season against Monroe August 31st.
