After a tough loss to Iowa State in the season opener, the Kansas State Wildcats will look to bounce back in their first game at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

The Wildcats host the North Dakota Fighting Hawks tomorrow evening in Manhattan, searching for redemption after a 24-21 defeat in Dublin, Ireland.

KSU has won 10 consecutive games against FCS opponents, dating back to 2014, and the game marks the third time in seven season under Chris Klieman that the Wildcats have faced a Missouri Valley Conference opponent.

KSU has posted a record of 84-9 at home against non-conference opponents dating back to 1990. Klieman says the team is looking forward to being back in front of the home crowd.

The Kansas Jayhawks look to build upon an impressive 31-7 win over Fresno State in the season opener, hosting the Wagner College Seahawks tonight.

This is the first ever matchup between the two schools, as Wagner is an FCS program out of the Northeast Conference, who went 4-8 in the 2024 season.

Jalon Daniels and the KU offense were clicking in the opener, but the Jayhawk defense was also impressive, allowing just 216 total yards and 37 total rushing yards. KU finished with 10 tackles-for-loss, two interceptions, three sacks, and four pass breakups.

It's a short week for the Jayhawks, with just six days to prepare for tonight's contest. Head Coach Lance Leipold says the team changed the preparation a bit this week.

Garden City football will be looking to forget the 2024 season, in which six wins were vacated due to an ineligible player, and cement themselves a conference title contender once again in 2025.

The Broncbusters are led by second-year head coach Kiyoshi Harris, who will also be taking over offensive playcalling duties this fall. Garden City returns two all-conference offensive linemen in Leni Lapuaho and Steven Moore, which Harris says is crucial to their offensive identity.

The Broncbusters have built a reputation on being one of the most lethal rushing attacks in JUCO, rushing for 289 yards per game last season with 41 rushing touchdowns. Harris says, however, the focus is on a better balance this year.

Five of the first seven games of the season are at home for Garden City. Harris says it's a great opportunity to hit the ground running in 2025.

Garden City opens their season next Saturday night when they battle the No. 4 Navarro College Bulldogs.

The Rashee Rice saga for the Kansas City Chiefs has finally reached the conclusion, with the wide receiver accepting a six-game suspension to begin the 2025 season.

The suspension is for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, stemming from an incident in the 2024 offseason in which Rice caused a multicar crash while racing on a Dallas highway that left multiple people injured. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years' probation for the crimes in July.

The ruling from the NFL voids the September 30th hearing that was orignally set, to be held before former federal Judge Sue L. Robinson.

Rice will miss games against the Chargers, Eagles, Giants, Ravens, Jaguars, and Lions. He will be eligible to return to the lineup on October 19th against the Las Vegas Raiders.

After a 2024 season that saw the Red Ravens mature quickly and share a conference championship with Hutchinson and Butler, CCC has their eyes on sole possession of the championship in 2025.

Head Coach Nick Dobler enters his second season at the helm, and sixth season on staff after four years as defensive coordinator, and is looking to build on an 8-3 campaign that saw Coach of the Year votes last season. He says a major key to success in this conference is having talent ready to step up each year.

There are some familiar faces back for the Red Ravens, with six returners on offense and four on defense, including a pair of All-KJCCC Honorable Mentions in center Devon Waller and wide receiver Jalile Bost, as well as renovations to the team's facilities. Dobler says this only improves the brand of Red Raven football.

CCC has a stretch of nine consecutive weeks with games this season, beginning on September 20th and extending to the regular season finale on November 15th. Dobler says that will be a tough challenge for the group to navigate.

Coffeyville opens their season next Saturday afternoon, when they host the Cisco College Wranglers.

One of the crucial pieces of the Kansas State Wildcats offense will be sidelined for multiple weeks due to an ankle injury.

Dylan Edwards left the season-opening loss to Iowa State in the first quarter, after taking a hit during a punt return. He would not return to the contest, and has been diagnosed with a left ankle injury.

Edwards will be out for Saturday's game against North Dakota, and is also considered doubtful for the September 6th game against Army, according to head coach Chris Klieman.

Klieman says that x-rays did come back negative, and that Edwards will be able to return to the field at some point this season.

The former Derby high school star finished with eight total touchdowns last season, five rushing, two receiving, and one punt return. He spent his freshman season playing for Coach Deion Sanders at the University of Colorado.

It's been a dream start to the regular season for Red Raven men's soccer, who are unbeaten through their first two matches, and also boast the KJCCC Player of the Week.

Sophomore forward Jacob Shaw was named the conference's top performer for the first week, after scoring two goals and having an assist in the season opener, a 3-1 win over Arkansas-Rich Mountain. Shaw continued his strong start, having a go-ahead game-winning goal in a 4-0 win over NOC-Enid on Saturday.

Shaw has been the best offensive player in the conference so far this season, leading the league in both goals and points, and tied for the conference lead in shots. He also played in 19 games as a freshman last season, scoring five goals and having 11 points for the Red Ravens.

Following a co-conference championship season in 2024, the Butler Grizzlies will be looking to stay at the top of the KJCCC with a new head coach on the sidelines.

Kyle Woodall takes over as the new man in charge of the program, following Bryce Vignery departing for a new position with the Kansas Jayhawks. Woodall says despite the change at head coach, the rest of the staff is pretty similar.

Butler had an opportunity to win the KJCCC outright, but had narrow losses to NEO, Snow College, and Coffeyville. Woodall says you can't be successful in this league without a full 60 minutes.

Following the season opener, the Grizzlies have back-to-back home games before a trip to Coffeyville. Woodall says it will be important to capitalize on the early season schedule.

Butler opens the 2025 season on Saturday against NEO in Miami.

The Kansas City Chiefs have brought back a familiar face in the defensive line room, agreeing to a trade with the New York Jets.

Defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi is returning to Kansas City, where he spent the past seven seasons, in exchange for a conditional sixth-round pick. The Chiefs also receive a conditional seventh-round pick in the deal.

Nnadi played 66 defensive snaps in the preseason for New York, making five tackles. The Jets have depth in the defensive tackle room, after acquiring Harrison Phillips and Jowon Briggs, making Nnadi the odd man out.

Nnadi is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, and has built a reputation around durability, appearing in 115 games in seven seasons. He will be a rotational defender, playing next to longtime teammate Chris Jones when the season opens next week.

The first baseman for the Kansas City Royals is having one of the best offensive months by a Royal in the past decade.

Vinnie Pasquantino was named the American League Player of the Week, the third such honor of his career. He also was awarded the award in June, and back in the 2022 season.

Pasquantino hit .379 last week with six home runs and 12 runs batted in. He also led the major leagues in slugging percentage, OPS, and total bases.

The first baseman also became the third player in franchise history to homer in five consecutive games, joining teammate Salvador Perez, and retired star Mike Sweeney.

Pasquantino leads the team in both home runs and runs batted in this season, slashing .279 with 24 home runs and 89 RBIs since the beginning of May.

Despite a fast start to the 2025 season, the Independence Pirates could not find the win column against the No. 14 Trinity Valley Cardinals, falling 28-15 on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates defense would make their presence known early, with Donya Borden recording an interception on the game's first drive, leading to a Jordan Morales touchdown run to finish off a nine-play 57-yard drive.

Starting quarterback Reeves Taylor, a transfer from Michigan State, would finish 12 of 15 for 119 yards before leaving the game with an injury. Keegan Anderson would replace Taylor, and finished 15 of 18 for 151 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals would respond from the early deficit, scoring 28 unanswered points, to take a commanding 28-7 lead in the fourth quarter. A late score and two-point conversion from the Pirates would be the final score on the season opening afternoon.

ICC will look to have a short memory, as they begin a stretch of three consecutive road games, which opens with the Ellsworth Panthers on Saturday.

The Kansas State Wildcats could not find the luck of the Irish on Saturday, dropping a close contest to Iowa State 24-21 in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic.

Avery Johnson finished with 294 yards of total offense and three touchdowns, but the Wildcats never led on the day, including trailing by 10 points late in the fourth quarter.

Kansas State was able to pressure Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht for most of the game, finishing with four team sacks and six tackles for loss.

The Cyclones only committed one team penalty, compared to the Wildcats' six, and also held the football for nearly eight minutes longer than the Wildcats.

KSU will have to bounce back from an early blemish, and host the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Saturday night in Manhattan.

It was a successful homecoming for the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday, with the team racing away with a 31-7 win over Fresno State, in the team's first game back at the remodeled David Booth Memorial Stadium.

Jalon Daniels was sensational in his season debut, completing 90% of his passes for more than 220 total yards of offense and three touchdown passes. The Jayhawks ran the ball effectively as well, with the team rushing for 207 yards on the evening.

The KU defense came ready to play in the opener, forcing two interceptions and a fumble from Fresno State quarterback E.J. Warner. The Jayhawks also held the Bulldogs to just 37 yards rushing on 29 carries.

It's positive momentum for a KU program that struggled mightily in the non-conference last season. The Jayhawks will host the Wagner College Seahawks on Friday night from Lawrence.

Red Raven soccer had a successful opening weekend of the 2025 regular season, with both the men's and women's teams picking up points in their home opener.

The Lady Ravens bounced back from a 2-1 loss to Rich Mountain on Thursday, to finish a 1-1 draw with Northern Oklahoma College-Enid on Saturday. Sophomore Rebeca Melo scored the team's goal, while sophomore goalie Macy Lemke finished with five saves.

The men's team continued their impressive offensive onslaught, defeating NOC-Enid 4-0 after a 3-1 win over Rich Mountain. Jacob Shaw, Reo Suzuki, Thomas Montero, and Ashton Haslam were the four goal scorers for CCC in Saturday's victory.

The Lady Ravens sit at 0-1-1 on the young season, while the men are 2-0-0 through the first week. Both teams will welcome the Pratt Beavers to Veterans Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, with the women playing at 2 and the men playing at 4.

The Kansas Jayhawks will kick off their 2025 season in a sold-out David Booth Memorial Stadium, the first game at the renovated stadium.

KU opens with the Fresno State Bulldogs, who will enter the season with a new head coach, as well as new offensive and defensive coordinators. Jayhawk Head Coach Lance Leipold says it's hard to know what to expect from Fresno tomorrow.

It was a roller coaster 2024 season for the Jayhawks, having a brutal non-conference before rallying in October, and finishing the season with a 5-7 record. Leipold says this year's team must get off to a faster start.

College football returns this weekend across the country, and the Kansas State Wildcats will be looking to pick up a win from across the Atlantic Ocean.

The No. 17 Wildcats open with conference rival Iowa State in Dublin, Ireland, just the second time in program history the team will open with a Big 12 opponent. The game will also be the second time KSU has played out of the United States, with the first against Nebraska in 1992, in Tokyo, Japan.

Head Coach Chris Klieman says this is a great week for both the school and the conference.

Both the Wildcats and Cyclones are viewed as Big 12 championship contenders this season, and KSU will be looking for revenge after Iowa State won a thriller in Ames last November. Klieman says he hopes his players get a special memory this weekend.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made one roster decision ahead of the season opener, trading a wide receiver to the San Francisco 49ers.

Skyy Moore has been traded to San Francisco, along with a seventh-round draft pick, in exchange for a sixth-round pick coming back to Kansas City.

The Chiefs drafted Moore in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft, where he recorded 43 catches for 494 yards and one touchdown across two seasons. He had zero receptions last season in six games before a core muscle injury ended his season.

Moore will get an opportunity to make an impact with the 49ers, with star receiver Brandon Aiyuk and veteran Jauan Jennings battling injury, and former Chief DeMarcus Robinson facing a three-game suspension.

Highland Community College football will be led by a new head coach in 2025, looking to remain a contender in the Jayhawk Conference.

Tom Minnick takes over as the head coach of the Scotties, after spending five seasons at Garden City. With inexperience on both the roster and sidelines for Highland, expectations are unclear entering Week 1. Minnick says it will be a challenge early in the season.

The Scotties have plenty of fresh faces on each side of the ball this fall. Minnick says the team is embracing a mentality of surprising the rest of the conference.

Highland opens with three consecutive home games. Minnick says it will be crucial to build momentum early.

The Scotties open the season next Saturday against Snow College.

Lady Raven volleyball begins their regular season this weekend at the Ranger/Wrangler Round Up in Texas.

The team will play two matches tomorrow, and two additional matches on Saturday. Head Coach Kandi Midgett says there were highs and lows during the preseason.

With one of the youngest rosters in the conference, CCC will have an opportunity to gain reps and chemistry in the non-conference portion of the schedule. Midgett says there is one key goal for the team in the first two weeks.

The Ravens have had an open competition for playing time and roster spots throughout camp thus far. Midgett says a number of players have stood out with their work ethic so far.

CCC will square off with Dallas College Eastfield and Ranger College tomorrow, before facing Blinn College and Cisco College on Saturday.

While the Red Ravens have to wait a few more weeks to open the 2025 season, the Dodge City Conquistadors get their season started this weekend in Texas.

Dodge City went 6-4 last season under first-year head coach Ryan Lusby, featuring one of the best defenses in the Jayhawk. Lusby says the defense should be one of the league's best this year.

The Conquistador offense struggled at times to build consistency from game to game, leading to multiple narrow losses with low-scoring totals. Lusby says the program has revamped the offense this year.

Dodge City has three weeks to prepare for Garden City after this weekend's game. Lusby says it's a unique situation for the team to navigate.

Dodge opens the 2025 season against Tyler (TX) on Saturday.

Running the football at a high level will remain a key part of the Red Raven identity in 2025, with a number of talented running backs ready to make an impact.

Coffeyville has a pair of returners from last season, in Steven Robinson and Charles Morgan. Head Coach Nick Dobler says the team also has plenty of freshman talent they like in the room.

Coffeyville also attacked the transfer portal, landing a pair of Division 1 bouncebacks from Oklahoma State and North Carolina. Dobler says one name has stood out thus far in practice.

The Red Ravens open the season at home on September 6th, in a rematch with the Cisco Wranglers, a game Coffeyville won 39-20 last season.

The Jayhawk Conference has plenty of recognition in the preseason NJCAA Division 1 polls, including the Red Ravens opening the season ranked No. 16 in the nation.

Defending national champion Hutchinson opens the season as the top team in the country, receiving all 12 first-place votes. Iowa Western opens the polls in the No. 2 spot, after dropping the national championship game to the Blue Dragons.

Garden City is the next highest league team, opening the season ranked No. 7, while Butler opens at the No. 13 spot.

Iowa Central opens the season at No. 15, while the Red Ravens are No. 16, and Dodge City opens at No. 19.

KJCCC football kicks off this weekend, with both Independence and Dodge City in action on Saturday.

The Independence Pirates begin their quest for a Jayhawk Conference championship, opening the season at home this weekend.

ICC is led by third year head coach Keith Donerson, and are looking for a bounce back season, after a 3-8 season in 2024, with just one conference win. Donerson says there are exciting players on offense for the Pirates this year.

The Pirates had a number of close losses last season, falling in overtime to Trinity Valley, and also dropping close contests to Iowa Western, Dodge City, and Iowa Central. Donerson says the key is to flip close losses into close wins.

Independence is the only team in the conference to have games scheduled in each of the first three weeks of the season, opening with Trinity Valley, before traveling to Ellsworth and NEO. Donerson says establishing momentum early is crucial.

ICC hosts the Trinity Valley Cardinals this weekend, with kickoff at 11 a.m. CT on Saturday.

Jayhawk Conference college football kicks off this weekend, and the Red Ravens are relying on experience in their secondary to help lead the 2025 defense.

CCC features plenty of new faces on both the defensive line and at linebacker, looking to replace numerous all-conference players that departed following 2024. Head Coach Nick Dobler says the safety room does have one key starter returning.

Lanning is not the only player with experience in the program available for CCC this fall on the back line. Dobler says the team has numerous redshirts they are ready to put on the field.

Coffeyville led the KJCCC in interceptions and defensive touchdowns last season, led by safeties Lanning, Baruch Hasabu, and Jayden Sheppard. The Ravens kick off their season on September 6th, with Independence and Dodge City the first two conference teams to open the season this weekend.

There is a new face in the Red Raven quarterback room this season, transferring in from Division 1 Washington University.

Camdyn Stiegeler joins the Ravens after two seasons with the Huskies, and is one of the signal callers competing for the CCC starting job this fall. He says the move to Coffeyville is finally starting to set in.

Coffeyville anticipates running an offensive scheme under new coordinator Ben McClung that features more complex reads and decisions for the quarterback. Stiegeler says the details have been the focus for the offense in camp.

The Washington transfer comes to Coffeyville with plenty of weapons, with numerous receivers and running backs returning from last season's team. Stiegeler says the offense has sky high potential in 2025.

Stiegeler, returner Joseph Vick, and fellow transfers Brady Driver and Mac Armstrong are considered the four front runners for the Ravens' starting job when the season opens on September 6th.

A University of Omaha men's basketball player, and former Coffeyville Community College athlete, has passed away following a drowning incident in Utah.

Deng Mayar was with a friend at the Blackridge Reservoir in Herriman, Utah, when they began struggling in the water. While Mayar's friend was able to reach the shore, Mayar never reemerged from the water, and his body was recovered by rescue crews on Saturday night.

Mayar spent last season at North Dakota, where he averaged 6.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. He had transferred to Omaha for his senior season.

The forward also spent the 2021-22 season with the Red Ravens, appearing in 30 games and averaging 11.6 points per game for Jay Herkelman's team. Mayar was 22 years old.

Cherryvale Chargers football is looking for a competitive fall season, welcoming a familiar face back to the sidellnes as head coach.

Harry Hester returns as the leader of the program, now entering his 13th season at Cherryvale, and 18th total as a head coach. The Chargers went 3-6 last season, including an 0-4 mark in district play.

Plenty of experience returns for the team, with 10 offensive starters and eight defensive starters back this fall. Seniors Reyce Booe, Cooper Smith, Landon Fox, and Leuie and Ethan Umbarger, among others, will be tasked with leading the team on the field.

The Tri-Valley league sent six teams to the playoffs last season, and the Chargers will have no time to ease into the 2025 season. They open on the road against Neodesha on September 5th, before hosting Humboldt in Week 2.

A pair of Division 2 football teams in the Four States are searching for their next starting quarterback, with the season just around the corner.

Both Pittsburg State and Missouri Southern have been embracing quarterback competitions entering the 2025 season, with neither program having announced a Week 1 signal caller yet.

For the Gorillas, they are searching for the heir to three-year starter Chad Dodson, who leaves PSU as one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in school history. Head Coach Tom Anthony says it's been a great battle so far.

At Missouri Southern, five different quarterbacks have a chance at the starting spot, with less than three weeks until the opener. Head Coach Atiba Bradley says it's not as simple as choosing the guy with the most talent.

Pittsburg State opens the season against the defending national champion Ferris State on August 28th, while MSSU opens with Midwestern State University on August 30th.

The presumed date for the disciplinary hearing of Kansas City Chiefs wide reciever Rashee Rice has been announced.

The star receiver is expected to meet in New York on September 30th, in a hearing led by Sue I. Robinson, a former U.S. district judge who serves as the disciplinary officer jointly appointed by the NFL and NFL Players Association. The only other NFL disciplinary case Robinson has presided over was the Deshaun Watson case in 2022.

Rice is now likely to be able to play the first four weeks of the regular season before any potential discipline is imposed for his role in a multicar crash in Dallas that left multiple people injured last summer. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years' probation last month.

Rice is recovering from a season-ending knee injury, but has been a full participant for most of Chiefs' training camp so far. He had 79 catches for 938 yards and seven touchdowns in his rookie season.

The projected suspension for Rice remains a four-to-six game ban, which would be served later in the 2025 regular season.

Red Raven volleyball has slotted in at the No. 8 spot in the 2025 KJCCC Division 2 Preseason Coaches Poll.

Two-time defending national champion Cowley is projected the top spot once again, receiving nine of the ten first-place votes. Johnson County is ranked second in the poll, with Kansas City Kansas CC third, Allen County fourth, Highland fifth, Neosho County sixth, Labette County seventh, and Coffeyville, Independence, and Fort Scott in a three-way tie for eighth.

The Red Ravens finished with a 9-25 record in the 2024 season, including a 3-7 record in conference play. Head Coach Kandi Midgett enters her second season at the helm of the program.

Lady Raven volleyball opens the regular season in the Ranger/Wrangler Roundup on August 22nd and 23rd, where the team will play in Texas.

With less than a week before the start of the regular season, Coffeyville Community College Men's Soccer has been projected to finish tied for fifth in the Preseason Coaches Poll.

The defending champion Cowley Tigers were picked to finish in first place, narrowly followed by Barton in second, and Dodge City in third. Seward County was picked to finish fourth, with the Red Ravens and Garden City in a tie for fifth.

The Ravens went 4-10-5 in the 2024 season, and are led by third-year head coach Steven Harrison. The team opens the season on the road against the University of Arkansas-Rich Mountain on Thursday, August 21st.

Lady Raven volleyball takes the court for the first time today, with an exhibition against the NEO Lady Norse.

The team will play two scrimmages prior to the season opener next week. Freshman Ainsley Scott says the team has been very competitive so far in practice.

CCC has one of the youngest rosters in the conference this season, with only four returning sophomores from last season's team. Sophomore Annabelle Bell says she's been working on both the physical and mental side of her game.

The Lady Ravens are led by second-year coach Kandi Midgett, who aims to lead the young group to the top half of the KJCCC this season. Freshman Prayer Roebuck says the competitiveness of Coach Midgett is contagious.

Lady Raven volleyball opens the regular season on August 22nd at the Wrangler Ranger Roundup.

Dewey Bulldogers football has officially kicked off fall practice, in preparation for the 2025 season to kick off in just a couple of weeks.

Dewey is led by new head coach Scott Sapulpa, who was promoted in June after starting as the defensive coordinator. He replaces former head coach Ryan Richardson, who resigned as head coach in early June.

The Bulldoggers have spent the summer making progress on the field and in the weight room. Sapulpa says the team has also improved quite a bit on the intangibles.

Dewey opens the season against Locust Grove at home on August 29th. Sapulpa says his team is eager to get the season started.

Reinforcements are on the way for the Kansas City Royals, with the team receiving positive updates on a pair of starting pitchers progressing from injury.

Right-handed pitcher Michael Lorenzen will join the team this weekend, and make his return to the mound on Saturday against the White Sox. Lorenzen had been dealing with an oblique strain since early July, and just finished a rehab assignment in the minor leagues.

Additionally, left-hander Cole Ragans threw a 15-pitch bullpen session Tuesday afternoon, his first time pitching off a mound since a rotator cuff strain suffered in June. Ragans will throw another bullpen later this week, and could be in line to begin a rehab assignment in the coming weeks, and return before the end of the season.

With Lorenzen's scheduled return, the team will move Trade Deadline acquisition Bailey Falter to the bullpen, and will keep fellow deadline pitcher Ryan Bergert in the starting rotation.

There will be new coordinators on each side of the football for the Red Ravens this fall, as Jeff Richards Jr. takes over leading the defense for CCC.

Richards comes to Coffeyville after time as the cornerbacks coach at Valdosta State University in 2023, and a Defensive Intern at the University of Texas in 2022. He says the fit with the Red Ravens made sense from the start.

The Red Ravens have quite a bit of experience on the defensive side of the ball this season, with a blend of returners, redshirts, and D1 and JUCO transfers. Richards says having guys with college reps is a nice advantage early on.

The Ravens open the season against a tough Cisco Wranglers team, that was among the best offenses in the Texas League last season, and returns starting quarterback Landon Vessel. Richards says he will put his players in position to make plays.

Coffeyville had the fourth-ranked defense in the KJCCC in points per game last season, and finished with the most interceptions and defensive touchdowns in the conference.

Coffeyville Community College women's soccer will be kicking off the 2025 regular season next week, and have been predicted to finish seventh in the Jayhawk conference this season.

Cowley was picked to finish in the top spot, earning five of the eight first-place votes. Hutchinson was projected second with two first-place votes, with Butler slotting in third, and receiving the final first place vote.

Barton was picked fourth, Dodge City fifth, and Garden City sixth, with Coffeyville and Seward County rounding out the eight-team Division 1 conference.

The Lady Ravens went 1-11-6 last season, and under the direction of new head coach Steven Harrison in 2025. The regular season opener is scheduled for next Thursday, August 21st, when they travel to Rich Mountain College.

An Independence High School state champion golfer was recognized for his achievements this past year at the August USD 446 School Board meeting.

Ethan Small is entering his senior year at IHS, and is the defending 4A state champion golfer, the first individual state champion for Independence in three decades.

IHS Head Golf Coach Dale Reynolds says Small separates himself with his work ethic.

Small shot a two-day total of 142 to win the state championship by one stroke over Wamego's Regan Kueker, in the May tournament at Sand Creek Station in Newton. Reynolds says it was an incredible run to close the season.

IHS has not had a back-to-back state champion in nearly a century, and Small will look to make history in his senior season.

Red Raven football will have a new leader of the offense this fall, with Ben McClung joining the staff as the new offensive coordinator.

McClung previously spent two seasons at Eastern Michigan University, where he served as an Offensive Quality Control coach in 2023, and as an Offensive Assistant in 2024, primarily working with quarterbacks. He says he's been pleased with what the Ravens have showed so far in camp.

CCC has multiple options in the quarterback room, with four frontrunners competing for the starting job. McClung says it's been a great battle for the position so far.

The Ravens have a scrimmage this weekend, and are just inside of four weeks from the season opener on September 6th. McClung says this is the time of year to really focus on the details.

The Raven offense ranked fourth in the KJCCC in points per game last season, with both the third ranked passing offense and rushing offense as well.

One of the top high school baseball players in the state of Kansas will be continuing his career in the SEC.

Right-handed pitcher Kam Smith of Girard has announced his committment to the University of Arkansas. Smith will be entering his junior season, and is already putting up record numbers on the mound.

Standing 6-foot-3, Smith was the 2025 3A Pitcher of the Year from Sports in Kansas, and finished the season at 92 miles per hour on his fastball. He struck out 71 batters in 39.2 innings, and is currently the number one ranked pitcher in Kansas in the Class of 2027, as well as being ranked 38th in the nation.

Smith has baseball in his blood, as his father Dan is a Girard alumni who received the Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year Award in 1993, before being selected in the seventh round by the Texas Rangers in the 1993 MLB Draft.

Temperatures remain high across the four state region, and the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association is being proactive and changing regulations for outdoor practices.

The association has lowered the highest wet bulb temperature allotted for outdoor practice, as well as cutoffs for when players are allowed to wear pads or pants while practicing. Wet bulb temperature marks the lowest temperature to which air can be cooled by the evaporation of water into it, and is measured by combining air temperature and humidity.

At Bartlesville High School, athletic trainer Alan Mount oversees keeping track of the measure for Bruin fall sports. BHS Athletic and Activities Director Thad Dilbeck says it's important to pay close attention over the next couple weeks.

Bartlesville also has an indoor practice facility on the south side of campus, which can host practice and activities if the outdoor temperature is deemed unsafe.

Red Raven volleyball will have a new coach on the sidelines this fall, following the hiring of a new assistant under Kandi Midgett.

KayCee Mundhenke has been hired as an assistant for the program, joining a team that is looking to take a leap forward in 2025, following a 9-25 season a year ago. She says missing her passion of coaching was a major driving force in the decision to come to Coffeyville.

The Red Ravens are a very young roster in 2025, with just four returners from last season's team. Mundhenke says it's an opportunity for players and coach to grow and develop together.

The Lady Ravens begin preseason games later this week, and open the season in less than two weeks. Mundhenke says this is a key time of evaluation for the program.

CCC volleyball opens the season at the Wrangler Roundup on August 22nd, before their home opener on September 5th in a home tournament.

An impressive summer ends on a high note for the Tulsa National Softball team, as they claim third place at the 2025 Little League Softball World Series.

Tulsa defeated North Carolina, 3-2, to win the Consolation Third Place Game in the tournament that takes place each year in Greenville, North Carolina. Here's how the final out sounded on the ESPN broadcast.

Pitcher Hamoneigh White was excellent, pitching six innings and allowing just two runs, earning the victory. Palmer Miner had a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning, while White also delivered an RBI single later in the inning.

Johnstown, Pennsylvania was crowned Little League champions, following a 1-0 win over Floyds Knobs, Indiana, marking the first championship for a Pennsylvania team in nearly 50 years.

Coffeyville Community College kicks off the 2025 regular season in less than a month, and the Red Ravens are expected to have one of the best wide receiver groups in all of JUCO.

Three receivers who had extended playing time last season return for CCC, as well as a pair of JUCO transfers, and numerous redshirts who are expected to contribute this season. Head Coach Nick Dobler says there's a lot of talent in the room.

Jalile Bost is one of the top route runners in the KJCCC, scoring touchdowns against Hutchinson, Highland, Butler, and Iowa Western. Dre Beasley was a key weapon for the Butler offense, while Brandon Heyward, Jaden Jones, and Donovan Moore all return with valuable reps. Dobler says it will take everyone on offense to be a truly elite group.

Kansas Jayhawks basketball is looking for a big bounceback season, following two consecutive years of disappointing early exits in the NCAA Tournament.

KU boasts one of the top recruiting classes in the nation, bringing in No. 1 ranked player Darryn Peterson, 7-foot center Paul Mbiya, and Atlanta forward Bryson Tiller. Head Coach Bill Self says the program has focused on addressing their weak points.

With a blend of freshmen, transfers, and returners, the Jayhawks have been building chemistry on the court this summer. Self says it's a group with a lot of potential.

Peterson is projected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and is one of the highest-rated freshmen in recent years. Self says he's already made quite the impression early in his college career.

Kansas will gear up for the regular season with exhibitions against both Louisvile and Fort Hays State in October.

A Kansas high school volleyball star, and future Kansas Jayhawk, will be suiting up for the U19 United States National Team later this month.

Taylor Stanley is a senior right side hitter from Blue Valley Southwest High School, and has been officially named to the Team USA roster for the International Volleyball Federation U21 World Championship in Surabaya, Indonesia. Stanley has been training with the National Team Development Program for the past two years, and now becomes the only athlete from Kansas selected to the squad.

Stanley and the roster of 12 will compete against China, Mexico, Korea, Croatia, and the Dominican Republic in their pool play matchups, which run through August 11th.

Stanley stands 6-foot-3 and is entering her senior season at Blue Valley SW. She is committed to continue her volleyball career in Lawrence.

For the first time since the Super Bowl, the Kansas City Chiefs will take the field in game action on Saturday night against the Arizona Cardinals.

Plenty of position battles and new additions looking to make the final roster will have their first true opportunity to stand out, with three weeks to determine which of the 90 players on the roster make the final 53-man roster.

Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulo says this weekend is a great opportunity to continue evaluating new faces.

Tight end Travis Kelce enters his 13th season in the NFL, and is looking to help the team win one more Super Bowl before he calls it a career. He says he feels motivated and ready to put in a full season.

The program is led by first-year head coach Steven Harrison, who has been with the men's program for three seasons, but will also be taking the reigns of the women's program in 2025. Coffeyville is looking for growth and development after a difficult 1-11-6 season in 2024.

The Red Ravens open the season on the road against Rich Mountain College on August 21st, before returning to Veterans Memorial Stadium for their home opener on August 23rd against NOC-Enid. The team will host Pratt on August 27th, Ranger College on August 30th, Dodge City on September 10th, and Hutchinson on September 13th, all of which are part of a five-game home stand.

Other key matchups to watch for are two games against Seward County on both September 17th and October 11th, as well as a pair of matchups with Butler on September 20th and October 15th.

One of the top high school football programs in the Kansas City area will be without their head coach for the first month of the 2025 season.

Lee's Summit North High School has suspended head coach Jason Rogers, and assistant coach Johlon Whittaker, for the first three games of the season, due to a violation of Missouri State High School Activities Association regulations.

School Principal Dr. Tim Collins sent a letter to staff and families, saying "contact days went over the MSHSAA-allowed 20 days and coaches were working with students during a dedicated summertime dead period earlier this summer."

Lee's Summit North is coming off an 11-1 season in 2024, and play Raymore-Peculiar, Staley, and Mill Valley (KS) in the first three games of the season. Rogers and Whittaker will both be eligible to return to the sidelines on September 19th when the Broncos battle Bentonville (AR)

Red Raven football is practicing daily in preparation of the regular season, and the special teams unit will be full of new faces in 2025.

CCC had one of the top special teams units in the conference last season, finishing with the highest field goal percentage, second-highest punt average, and numerous blocked kicks late in the season.

Red Raven basketball is looking to get back to the National Tournament and compete for a national championship, and now know the path they'll take to get there with the release of the 2025-26 schedule.

The Ravens will open the season at home against Southwestern JV on November 1st, before hosting Fort Scott on November 4th. The team will travel to Indian Hills Community College for a non-conference tournament, where they will face John. A Logan College, and Malcolm X College.

CCC opens conference play with a pair of home games against league rivals, hosting Butler on November 19th, and Independence on November 22nd.

Additional games of note are a home game with Barton on November 29th, hosting defending league champion Cowley on February 4th, and hosting Hutchinson on November 21st.

The Blue Dragons are the defending national champions, after an 11-1 season in which they shared the 2024 KJCCC championship with Butler and Coffeyville. Hutchinson received six of the seven total first place votes.

Garden City is selected to place second in the conference, receiving the final first place vote, with the Butler Grizzlies projected to finish third. The Broncbusters are led by second-year coach Kiyoshi Harris, while Butler is led by former defensive coordinator Kyle Woodall, entering his first season as head coach.

Coffeyville is aiming to build off a 9-3 season under head coach Nick Dobler, that had the team finish in the Top 10 in the national rankings. Dodge City, Independence, and Highland rounds out the seven ranked teams in the preseason polls.

Both Independence and Dodge City get the football season started with games on August 23rd. Highland and Butler both open their seasons on August 30th, while Coffeyville, Hutchinson, and Garden City all kick off on September 6th.

Following a season with some uncharacteristic ups and downs, as well as a knee injury, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker is making some adjustments to his kicking motion ahead of the 2025 season.

Harrison Butker has been one of the league's most accurate kickers in the history of the NFL since entering the league in 2017, helping the Chiefs win three Super Bowls, and converting on 88.6% of kicks in his NFL career.

Butker says he's been focusing on his follow through when kicking this camp.

In addition to technique adjustments, recent NFL rule changes on kickoffs have impacted Butker's strategy, with offenses starting at the 35-yard line following a touchback. He says the changes have caused a change in approach on the kickoff.

Butker is entering his ninth season in the NFL, and is still the all-time leading scorer in the history of Georgia Tech.

Basketball season may still be a few months away, but the Lady Ravens now know their journey to get to the National Tourament, with the release of the 2025-26 schedule.

CCC opens with a home matchup with Labette County on November 4th, before hosting a weekend tournament that weekend, facing Southeast Community College, and Connors State College.

The Lady Ravens will open conference play with a pair of games at Nellis Hall, battling rival Butler on November 19th, and county rival Independence on November 22nd.

Additional conference games of note is a home game with Dodge City on December 6th, a trip to Hutchinson on January 7th, and sophomore night against Pratt on February 25th.

Red Raven football is back on campus practicing, with the official start of fall camp over the weekend, and the defensive line is looking to step up and lead one of the nation's top pass rushes.

Coffeyville will have some new faces on the defensive line this fall after the departure of all-conference players D.J. Jackson and Fred Giles. Head Coach Nick Dobler says the team has plenty of options at the position.

Cyprien is the returner with the most experience for the team on the d-line, finishing with 17 tackles and four tackles for loss in limited playing time as a freshman. Cyprien showed flashes of stardom, with seven tackles and a forced fumble against Garden City, before an injury forced him to miss the final five games of the season.

Dobler says Cyprien can be one of the nation's best edge rushers.

Other defensive ends to watch for are Northwest Oklahoma State transfer Jalen Atkins, Georgia Military transfer Price Hamilton, and Jaheim Johnson. Coffeyville opens the season on September 6th against Cisco College, and the KJCCC Preseason Rankings are scheduled to be released tomorrow.

The Royals have found momentum, winning their fourth consecutive series following a 7-4 win in 10 innings against the Toronto Blue Jays.

KC was able to tie the game in the eighth inning on an RBI single from Vinnie Pasquantino, before erupting for five runs in the tenth inning. Manager Matt Quatraro says everyone in the lineup was able to contribute.

The series victory gets the club back to the .500 mark at 56-56, and currently 3.5 games out in the Wild Card race. Quatraro says the key is to continue stacking momentum.

Kansas City travels to Boston to begin a series with the Red Sox, who currently hold one of the three Wild Card spots in the American League. Coverage of the series opener begins tonight at 6 p.m. CT, with first pitch at 6:10 on the Mighty 690, KGGF. Bailey Falter makes his team debut for the Royals, against Brayan Bello of Boston.

A former Jayhawk conference baseball star is making a name for himself at the Division 1 level, playing shortstop for George Mason University.

Owen Clyne was a standout for the Barton Cougars in the 2024 season, hitting .400 and reaching base in more than half of his at-bats. He says he learned from failure his first season, to rise to stardom in his sophomore campaign.

Barton baseball has won at least 35 games in four straight seasons, including being the No. 1 seed in the Plains District Tournament this spring, before losing to Coffeyville. Clyne says the standard of excellence at Barton stands out.

In his first season of Division 1 baseball, Clyne hit .341 with 10 doubles, and was named 1st-Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference. 

The Kansas City Royals were active on trade deadline day, bringing in multiple pitchers and an experienced outfielder as they chase a playoff spot.

The team elected to make additions rather than unload expiring contracts, with the team currently three games back in the Wild Card race. General Manager J.J. Picollo says the front office believes in this group of guys.

Despite having one of the best starting rotations in the MLB, KC brought in left-hander Bailey Falter, as well as a pair of right-handed pitchers from San Diego. Picollo says it was to add to the team's overall depth.

To make the San Diego trade happen, the team shipped long time backup catcher Freddy Fermin to the Padres. Picollo says it's always hard to trade a player like Fermin.

Fall sports athletes are moving on to campus this weekend at Coffeyville Community College, including the Red Raven volleyball team.

CCC Volleyball is looking to take a step forward in the 2025 season, after a 9-25 season in 2024 under first year head coach Kandi Midgett. She says the program is focused on building connections early.

The team does have four returners from last season's roster, leading a team filled with mostly freshmen. Midgett says she has high expectations of her sophomores this fall.

More than a dozen freshmen are competing for both roster spots and playing time when the regular season starts next month. Midgett says she's looking for players to stand out beginning this weekend.

Lady Raven Volleyball opens their exhibition schedule on August 14th, before opening the regular season on August 22nd in Texas.

Fall camp for Red Raven football begins this weekend, with the team beginning to look ahead to the season opener against the Cisco Wranglers.

Many positions on the Raven roster have either returners from last season's team, or veteran experience that either transferred or redshirted. One of the rooms with a few more questions, however, is the tight end room.

Head Coach Nick Dobler says the team is replacing two of the best tight ends in JUCO.

Ryley Zalusky spent the spring with the Red Ravens, emerging as a prime contender to start at the position. He is a former Division 1 quarterback recruit, who spent last season as a tight end at Highland. Dobler says Zalusky has all the tools to be successful.

Other tight ends on the roster to watch are freshman Isaiah Bird-Wilson, freshman Keith Jones II, and freshman Caige Bratcher. CCC opens the season on September 6th at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Jayhawk conference football teams begin fall camp this weekend, and five safeties in the conference have been named to the JCGridiron Watch List.

Butler has a pair of names on the list, in Gerard Reed and Calvin Townes. Reed had 35 tackles and an interception last season, while Townes has impressive size at 6-foot-4 and had 25 tackles a season ago.

Highland's Gabriel Hoskins makes the watch list after 24 tackles and two pass breakups in the 2024 season. Hutchinson's Michael Graham had 16 tackles and two interceptions in limited time, earning a spot on the list.

The final KJCCC player on the list is new Garden City safety Josiah Jackson, who transfers in from Division 1 West Virginia.

Players in the safety room to watch out for on the Red Ravens include returner Jack Lanning, redshirt Robert Deal, and redshirt Adrian Buchanan, among others.
