Coffeyville completed its first sweep of a Jayhawk Conference opponent this season, with the CCC women defeating Pratt Community College 65-57 and the men doing the same 91-58.

The Coffeyville women were up first, but the game was briefly delayed by severe weather moving through the area. As the game got going, the team struggled to hit shots, but solid defense combined with an overaggressive Pratt offense gave Coffeyville plenty of chances from the free throw line. The Red Ravens would score 23 of their 65 points from the charity stripe, and made the difference down the stretch as both of Pratt's main post players fouled out. Devin Wright would take advantage of the foul trouble, leading all scorers in the game by scoring 20 points off the bench. Head coach Tony Turner said once she gets her confidence up, Wright will be hard to stop.

After the women's contest, the men took to the floor, and much like the first half, Pratt came out aggressive. However, Coffeyville would struggle to get much of anything, and despite leading the majority of the half, they would head into the locker rooms leading by only three, 35-32. Starting with the second half, though, it would seem to be a new Coffeyville team. The game quickly got out of hand, and in just eight minutes into the half, the Red Ravens had extended their lead to 20. Head coach Jay Herkelman said reminding his team to do their jobs and remember the fundamentals helped the team build such a lead so quickly. He also said Pratt's overaggressiveness also worked against them.

The Red Raven women improve to 2-1 on the season, and 1-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, the men extend their unbeaten streak to 4-0 and are sitting at 2-0 in the conference. Next up, the teams will travel to Garden City for a matchup with the Bronc Busters.

Independence Community College has announced it will promote defensive coordinator Jason Martin to its head coaching position starting this season.

Martin replaces outgoing head coach Kiyoshi Harris, who is leaving ICC to work for the Boise State University football program. He has been with the program for just over four years, serving as defensive coordinator and as secondary coach. Harris also has experience as the quality control defensive backs coach at UCLA, a D1 NCAA program.

In addition, linebackers coach and special teams coordinator Steve McCollom will become the new assistant head coach and defensive coordinator for the Pirates. 

The Caney Valley Bullpups turned a close game after one quarter into a blowout as they defeated Neodesha 80-45 Friday night.

Caney Valley and Neodesha traded blows in the 1^st quarter that saw the Bullpups own a 14-6 before they turned on the jets and in the second quarter and never looked back. The Bullpups were led by DaRon Davis who had a game-high 22 points including a big three-point play in the second quarter.

Also part of the Bullpup attack was Jack Billingsley who had 17 points, Kaehl Smith with 14, and Tanner Rose who came off the bench with 10 points. Neodesha was paced by Maddux Johnson who had 17 points and drained five 3-point shots. Phoenix Carpenter had 11 for the Blue Streaks with Seth Strange had nine points including a third-quarter play where he attacked the glass.

The Bullpups, currently 6-4 on the year, are riding a 4-game winning streak and will return to action on Monday as they will take on Field Kindley in Coffeyville. You will be able to listen to that game on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF with Matt Jordan and Kyle Hey on the call beginning at 6 pm.

Sedan picked up another conference victory Friday night, defeating Argonia 61-41 in 690AM's Game of the Week.

From the get-go, it was a fairly straightforward game, with Sedan jumping out to an early lead and never looking back. Quick whistles all night put several players into foul trouble, but it was Argonia who felt the most pressure. The Red Raiders only suited up seven players for the game, and two fouled out before the halfway point of the fourth quarter. Sedan's Trenton Crawford would be the only Blue Devil to foul out of the contest.

Sedan's Dameion Hatten led all scorers with 23 on the night. He was joined by teammates Keaton Dickens (13) and Eli Campbell (10). Argonia freshman Dalton Morrison led all Raiders scorers with 16.

Sedan improves to 8-2 on the season, while Argonia drops to 1-9.

Field Kindley drops both home games to Pittsburg as the Lady Nado lose 69-28 and the Nado boys lose 72-44.

The Lady Dragons were led by a big night from Madden Petty, with 25, and Addison Fornelli with 19 points. Kylie Speer led the Lady Nado with 10 points.

Javon Grant led the way for Pittsburg with 27 points and Malakai Courtney had 15 points, seven of which came in a big second quarter where the Dragons opened it on a 13-0 run.

Coffeyville back in action on Monday against fellow Montgomery County foe Caney Valley, girls play at 6:00pm with the boys to follow. It's the first of their meetings for this season with the second at Caney on February 10^th.

Tonight's Game of the Week matchup brings together two teams from the South Central Border League in Sedan and Argonia. The Blue Devils are 7-2 on the season, while the Red Raiders enter the contest with a record of 1-8.

Sedan head coach Lance Jeffers said his team will need to keep up the intensity to move past a team like Argonia.

Friday night's matchup will begin around 7:30 and can be heard on the Mighty 690, KGGF. Connor Harbit will be on the call.

Independence Community College Head Football Coach Kiyoshi Harris will be moving up the coaching ladder and will be heading to Boise State to be the new director of player personnel.

Harris spent three years with the Pirates including his lone head coaching season in which he led ICC to an 8-2 record and a Jayhawk Conference Championship.

Harris will be joining Andy Avalos who recently became head coach of the Broncos coming from Oregon who was the Ducks' defensive coordinator.

Defensive coordinator Jason Martin will take over the head coaching duties for the Pirates. The Pirates have their season opener on March 26th.

Coffeyville Community College split its double header with Hutchinson on Wednesday, with the men victorious at 88-68 but with the women falling short at 70-63.

The women's contest was, as always, up first, and at first seemed the Red Ravens would cruise to an easy upset victory over the 12th-ranked Blue Dragons. Coffeyville outscored Hutchinson 20-7 in the first quarter and would head into the locker rooms leading by 16. They would extend that lead to as many as 21 points halfway through the third, but the game would be thrown on its side in a heartbeat. A massive Hutchinson run would take the wind out of the Coffeyville sails, and the Blue Dragons would take their first lead midway through the fourth. Although Coffeyville fought to the end, foul trouble ultimately spelled doom for the team as they fell 70-63. Faith Simpson led all scorers on the night with 25 points. Dariauna Carter joined her in double-digits range with 15 points. The women now sit at 1-1 on the season, and 0-1 in Jayhawk Conference play.

After the women's game, the men would take to the court, and much like their counterparts, it would be an early lead for the Red Ravens. Five different Coffeyville players would find paydirt from the three-point line before Tylor Perry became the first to hit a second attempt. The team would lead Hutchinson by as much as 12 in the first half, but a small run just before halftime made it just a 6-point game. Coffeyville would come out of the half with just as much fire as they had at the start of the game, but despite leading 56-44 at one point, Hutchinson would storm back to within 1 at 56-55. This time, though, Coffeyville would not crumble, with the team outscoring Hutchinson 32-13 over the last 10 minutes of the contest, including this four-point play from Perry. Larry White led all Red Ravens scorers with 18 points, the third different leading scorer Coffeyville has had this season. The men now sit at 3-0, and 1-0 in the conference.

With Hutchinson now in the past, both teams will return to Nellis Hall this Saturday for a meeting with Pratt Community College. Men's head coach Jay Herkelman said the Beavers are a mystery this season.

The women's contest will kick off Saturday's affairs, starting at 2 pm, and the men will follow. As always, you can catch all the action on US98.1, KUSN.

The Field Kindley boys just finished their 5^th game in six days with a loss on the road to Parsons. After a strong first half trailing by eight 37-29, the Nado would go cold offensively in the second half as the Vikings pulled away for a 74-42 win.

Coach Tyler Thompson says the cold streak came at the same time Parsons got hot. Coach Thompson says as they head into Friday's matchup against Pittsburg it's going to be about controlling Javon Grant, who's had multiple 30 and 40 point games this season.  Ethan Viets lead the Nado in scoring with 17 points, 13 of which came in the first half.

The Field Kindley girls basketball team picked up their first league win of the season over Parsons 63-60. It was a back and forth first half as both teams would go on runs, but the Lady Nado would go into halftime with the lead 27-23.

Coffeyville got a big third quarter from Freshman Teagan Titus who had back to back threes that helped them control most of the quarter. FKHS had four players in double-digit scoring. Adyson Peck led the Nado with 18 points and had her fourth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Kyleigh Flores added 14 points and Kylie Speer and Titus both had 10. Back at home Friday night as they take on Pittsburg at 6:00pm.

Four Caney Valley players ended up in double figures as the Bullpups blew out the Eureka Tornadoes Tuesday night by a score of 76-49.

Eureka led Caney Valley at the end of a briskly played first quarter but Caney Valley took control of the game with a 21-7 second quarter that gave the Bullpups a 37-24 halftime advantage. Caney outscored Eureka 39-25 in the second half to arrange the final margin.

Kaehl Smith led a very spread out Caney effort with 14 points. Daron Davis added 12 points, Ridic Martin netted 11 points while Jace Scott chipped in 10 points. Eureka's Gabe Valentine led all scorers with 18 points.

Caney moves to 4-4 on the season and will not get much rest for the next week as this was the first of 5 games in 7 days. The Bullpups travel to Inola for a match-up on Thursday before returning to league play when they travel to Neodesha on Friday. You will be able to catch the Neodesha game on Classic Hits 104.1 with tip-off scheduled for 7:30. Kyle Hey will be on the call.

The Cherryvale Chargers defeated the Neodesha Bluestreaks by a final score of 71-41.

Landon Bennett led the way for the Chargers with 23 points. Bennett knocked down three deep-balls which led the team. Head coach Rodney Vigil was very pleased with his performance.

Rayden Wright wreaked havoc down low and the Bluestreaks had difficulties guarding him. The sophomore had 12 points and dominated defensively as well.

As for the Bluestreaks, Maddux Johnson led the scoring with 18 points including four triples but was held scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Neodesha kept it close for more than half of the first quarter with the game being knotted up at seven, but Cherryvale went on a 13-0 run and never looked back.

Cherryvale improves to 6-2 while Neodesha falls to 2-8.

Field Kindley gets back on the winning side beating rival Independence 56-44. Indy would start the game strong holding a lead for much of the first quarter. Easton Ewing's size was a miss-match early as he had 13 first-half points, but Coffeyville capitalizes when Ewing would take a breather on the bench as they jumped out to a 28-24 lead at the half.

The Nado, on the back of a strong performance from Tariq Logan, would pull away from Indy in the second half. Logan had 29 points, 15 in the second half and a three-pointer that put an end to a small Indy run. Nado boys looking to get over .500 in league play as they take on Parsons tomorrow.

Independence Lady Bulldogs and Abby Veile just too much for the Lady Nado to handle tonight as they fall 57-45. Veile was dominant from start to finish, with 24 first-half points and 34 points total for the game. A back and forth first quarter would see Indy with a three-point lead 15-12. The Lady Bulldogs would slowly start to build on that lead with a 30-22 halftime lead and then a 43-30 lead after three quarters.

The Lady Nado saw valuable minutes from three freshmen, Amyah Moore Kendrex, Teagan Titus, and Sidney-Lynn Burnett and Head Coach Anita Walker says they are the energy of the team. Adyson Peck would lead Nado scorers with 19 followed by Kyleigh Flores with 12. No rest for the Nado as they take on Parsons tomorrow night at 6:00pm.

CCC will have a good chance to test the strength of both its men's and women's basketball teams as they travel to Hutchinson Community College on Wednesday.

Both Blue Dragons squads were predicted to finish first in the Western Division of the Jayhawk Conference, according to the preseason coaches poll. The men started their season with an 87-71 victory over Seminole State College, while the women defeated the Bethany College JV 92-34.

The Red Raven men are 2-0 and won both their non-conference matchups by 40+ points. The women are 1-0, and defeated Southwest Christian University's JV last Wednesday. Men's head coach Jay Herkelman said the Blue Dragons are always a tough matchup.

This will be the fourth straight year that Coffeyville and Hutchinson have opened up conference play against each other. Wedneday's action will start with the women's game at 5:30 pm, with the men to follow. You can catch the games on the air, with pregame starting 15 minutes prior to tip-off on US98.1, KUSN.

Coffeyville Community College will kick off its 2021 volleyball season tonight, hitting the road to take on Highland Community College.

The new season is the first season for head coach Katrina Gockley, who comes to the Red Ravens after previously coaching at Parkview High School (Springfield, MO) and Forsyth High School (Forsyth, MO). She replaces former head coach Delice Downing, who accepted a job with Hutchinson Community College after leading Coffeyville for 15 years. Downing had won two national championships with Coffeyville in 2017 and 2018.

The Red Ravens were predicted to finish sixth out of eleven teams in the eastern division of the Jayhawk Conference. Highland, tonight's opponent, was placed third in the poll.

It was a tough tournament for Field Kindley as they finish the Ralph Miller Classic with a 72-48 loss against Emporia. Despite the loss, the Nado had a much stronger start to the game against Emporia than in their previous two. Nado Coach Tyler Thompson says it was a much-improved performance.

Two players for Coffeyville combined for 36 of their 48 points as Tariq Logan had 19 points and Ethan Viets had 17 points. The Nado have a tough stretch of games coming up as they play five games in an eight-day stretch starting with Independence on Monday.

The Coffeyville Red Ravens men's basketball team completed their non-conference schedule with another dominating performance, this time 94-51 over the Labette Community College Cardinals.

Although Labette would score the game's first points, Coffeyville would take the lead almost immediately, and never really looked back. The Red Ravens started the game on a 22-3 run, and allowed just 13 points total through the first half.

Much like the first game of the season, Coffeyville employed a balanced scoring attack. Four players reached double digits, including leading scorer Blaise Keita (14), Tylor Perry (13), Kevaughn Ellis (11) and Hayden Brittingham (11). Only Brittingham had reached double-digits in Wednesday's game.

Now 2-0, the Red Raven men will rejoin the women for their first conference matchup, a tough road affair against Hutchinson. The Blue Dragons were picked to finish first in the eastern division of the Jayhawk Conference, while the Red Ravens were picked to finish first in the west. Wednesday's broadcast will start with the women's game at 5:30 pm, with the men to follow.

Game two of the Ralph Miller Classic and another tough loss for the Nado boys basketball team falling to Carthage 79-30. Field Kindley started the game quickly getting a 4-0 but then Carthage would go on a 16-0 run and wouldn't look back as they led 39-19 at the half.

The Tigers were led by great shooting performances from Max Templeman who had 21 points and Joel Pugh who was 6/9 from beyond the arc with 18 points. Nado Head Coach Tyler Thompson says they have a tough stretch of games coming up.

FKHS will tip-off tomorrow for their final game of the tournament at 12:45pm as they take on Emporia.

The Coffeyville Community College men's basketball team will take to the court a little earlier than usual Saturday, facing off against Labette Community College in its final non-conference game of the season.

Both the Red Ravens and the Cardinals are 1-0 on the season, with CCC defeating Missouri State University - West Plains on Wednesday and Labette holding a victory over Allen Community College. Despite both teams belonging to the Jayhawk Conference, Labette plays in Division II, making this a non-conference affair for the Red Ravens.

Head coach Jay Herkelman said the Cardinals are aggressive and have some athletes at their disposal.

The Caney Valley Bullpups high school girl's basketball has added two games to their schedule.

They will host Wyandotte tonight and the JV girls will play two quarters starting at 5 p.m. in the main gym. The varsity girls will begin at 6 p.m. with no boy’s games. Tomorrow the girls will host Parsons. The JV girls will play two quarters starting at 4 p.m. in the main gym. The varsity girls will begin at 5 p.m. with no boy’s games.

A tough test for Field Kindley in their first matchup of the Ralph Miller Classic in Chanute. The Nado taking on a top 6A team with the reigning 6A Player of the Year, Sterling Chapman, fell to the Campus Colts 75-28. Nado Head Coach Tyler Thompson says they always have a goal coming into tournament games like this.

The Nado will take on Carthage tomorrow in the first game of day 2 of the tournament at 3:00pm. Coach Thompson says the Carthage coach, Nathan Morris, went to Coffeyville and this will be his first matchup against his alma mater.

Starting next week, more spectators will be allowed at official KSHSAA events. The Board of Directors voted 46-27 in favor of allowing a maximum of four spectators per participant. Previously, only two spectators were allowed. Local school districts may continue to choose to tighten these restrictions based on their current situation.

The new rules will take effect January 29th. Masks will still be required to be worn at all events.

The 2021 season began with a bang for the Coffeyville Community College Red Ravens, as both the men and the women picked up blowout victories in non-conference play.

The CCC women, picked to finish third in the preseason conference poll, came out agressive and strong against the Southwest Christian JV squad for the 111-56 victory. A 20-3 run right at the beginning of the game pretty much put the game out of reach. With the lead so large, including a 29-point deficit at the half, Coffeyville could afford to experiment with its full lineup. All 14 rostered players scored points during Wednesday's game, with Amiya Josey leading the way with 21 points. Head coach Tony Turner said getting players on the floor helps the team get better.

After the break, it was the men's time to shine, taking on a cross-border foe in Missouri State University - West Plains. Although the Red Ravens returned four players from the 2020 roster, only two started the contest against the Grizzlies. Throughout the game, Coffeyville employed a five-man in, five-man out strategy that seemed to keep players rested and strong, and built a lead off of that. The Red Ravens also showed amazing athleticism that went deep into the roster. Much like the women before them, the men would never trail in the game and eventually walked off with an 86-46 victory. Debuting guard Markeith Browning led the way with 12 points, with Bostyn Holt and Hayden Brittingham each adding 11 as well. After the game, head coach Jay Herkelman said he knows the offense can do better, but did struggle against a rarely-seen defense.

Both CCC teams are now 1-0 on the season. The men will break off for a brief moment, taking on Labette Community College in a men's only contest on Saturday before both teams hit the road next Wedneday, traveling to Hutchinson.

The Caney Valley Bullpups stepped out of league play Tuesday night as they were able to knock off the Chelsea Dragons by a score of 61-55. This was a replacement game for the Bullpups after having the Caney Valley tournament in Ramona, Oklahoma being canceled last week.

Coach Jim Deaton said even though his team got down by 12 early on, he liked the way his team responded to the adversity.

Caney's next league match-up is against Eureka and Deaton says it's never easy against Eureka and says one of the keys to victory is on the boards.

There's a change in the schedule for the Ralph Miller Classic in Chanute that the Coffeyville boys basketball team will play in this week. Two teams have dropped out of the tournament and the Nado who were set to play tomorrow at 3:00pm will play tomorrow at 6:30pm instead.

It won't be an easy matchup for the Nado as they take on 5-1 Campus, who has the reigning 6A player of the year, Sterling Chapman. If FKHS loses tomorrow they'll player at 3:00pm on Friday and if they win they'll play at 6:30pm on Friday.

Although starting off a little bit later than usual, tomorrow marks the beginning of a brand new season for Coffeyville Community College basketball.

Both the Red Raven men and women will be taking part in non-conference action, but they each will welcome different teams to Nellis Hall. The women will start off the meeting with a matchup against Southwestern Christian University's JV squad. After that, the men will take on Missouri State - West Plains out of the Missouri Community College Athletic Conference. 

Multiple starters return for CCC, and both have added several new recruits to the mix. The NJCAA is not allowing spectators until February 5th, but you can catch a broadcast of all the action on 98.1, KUSN. The CCC women will tip off at 5:30 pm.

The Labette Community College Foundation has announced the successful completion of the Pathways to the Future Athletic Complex capital campaign, a total of over $5.8 million. The campaign funding will focus on the expansion, major renovation, and upgrading of the current gymnasium.

In January of last year, the LCC Foundation was awarded a $500,000 challenge grant from the Mabee Foundation, of Midland, TX toward the construction of the LCC Athletic and Wellness Complex. The Foundation was required to secure over $835,000 in cash and multi-year pledge commitments by January 14, 2021, to receive the challenge grant funding. The campaign began in 2016.

The Athletic Complex project will provide air conditioning, new seating, and other updates to the current gym. It will also make it possible to construct a 21,850 ft. addition for classroom space for Exercise Science, Athletic Training, and Physical Education programs; indoor softball/baseball training area; wrestling training area; lockers; showers; weight room; and a fitness center that will be open to all students.

Former K-State defensive lineman Vai Lutui passed away over the weekend due to complications from COVID-19.

Lutui was on the roster during the team's resurgence in 2011 and 2012 and started 24 games. He earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors his senior season with 5.0 TFL, 23 total tackles and a fumble recovery against Miami (FL). He ended up with a 21-5 record with the Cats. Lutui previously led Mt. San Antonio CC to a national title in 2010 and recorded 63 total tackles, 19.5 TFL, and 12 sacks in his two years there.

He had a wife and four children.

The Sedan boys' basketball team overcame a slow start to eventually dispatch the Udall Eagles 69-45 in our first Game of the Week.

The Blue Devils (4-1) came out slowly, struggling to find open shots. Leading scorer Dameion Hatten was held scoreless through the first eight minutes, a major factor that helped the Eagles (1-9) jump out to an 11-2 lead.

After the first quarter came to a close at just 13-6, Hatten would get things going with a few quick baskets early in the second. Hatten's production would put a spark in the rest of the team, as Sedan would surpass Udall at 16-15 and would never look back. 

Hatten led all scorers with 31, and sophomore Koda Blankenship would also add 12 to the Blue Devils total. Austin King led all Udall scorers with 16, while Trent Whiteman added 15 himself. 

Sedan now sits atop the Garden Plain Sub-State standings with an .800 winning percentage. Garden Plain and Belle Plaine are tied for second at 6-2 and a .750 winning percentage.

The Caney Valley Bullpups dropped their league opener on Tuesday to Erie by a score of 75-62. Coach Jim Deaton said that his team started out well but were out-sized in the paint.

Deaton did say that even though they dropped a tough decision, he was pleased with the team's effort.

Caney's next league match-up is against Eureka and Deaton says it's never easy against Eureka.

The Field Kindley boys basketball team was looking to improve upon their strong start to 2021 coming off a win against Chanute. They had a tough matchup in front of them as Fort Scott was also coming off their own big win against Pittsburg. A slow start for the Nado will see the Tigers get out to a big lead. Head Coach Tyler Thompson says they didn't show up to start the game.

Coach Thompson says it was a much better second half as they cut what was a 20 point deficit int the first half down to 6 points in the fourth quarter. Despite the comeback effort the Nado fall to Fort Scott 61-52. Gavin Pytlowany lead Fort Scott with 21 points and Tariq Logan lead all scorers with 28 points. Next up Labette County on Friday.

First league home game for the Field Kindley girls basketball team and just their second league game of the season. It was a back and forth first half the Lady Nado and the Tigers. Fort Scott held the four point lead at the end of the first quarter. After a small run by the Nado they took the lead into halftime 23-22.

A strong start to the second half would see the Nado control most of the third quarter but after a run by Fort Scott and a steal and easy lay up to end the quarter Fort Scott had their first lead of the second half 34-33. The momentum to end the third was swung in the Tiger's favor and they hung on to it to pull away for a final of 46-35. Ella Beth finishes with 19 for Fort Scott. Adyson Peck records her third straight double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. FKHS will take on Labette County on Friday at 6:00pm.

The Field Kindley boys basketball team, after starting the season 0-2 in the month of December, were looking for a fresh start in 2021. On the road and facing a tough 3-1 Chanute Blue Comets team the Nado lead for almost the entire first quarter. They would keep that momentum going and head into half time with a 28 to 24 lead. Tariq Logan led the way for the Nado with 13 first half points. Kam Koester led Chanute scorers with 9 first half points.

The Nado would keep control in the second half only trailing once. Good shooting from the three point line and a big second half from Tariq Logan would lead the Nado to their first victory of the season 57-50. Logan finished with 24 points followed by Ethan Viets with 12. FKHS is now 1-2 on the season and will face a 3-3 Fort Scott team in their first home league game Tuesday.

First game of 2021 and first league game of the season for the Field Kindley girls basketball team. The Lady Nado had a tough matchup taking on a 3-1 Chanute team lead by Senior Kori Babcock. Despite a strong first half from Babcock, scoring 21 of the Lady Comets 28 first half points, the Nado only found themselves down 28-25. A strong first half from Addison Peck would help keep Coffeyville in it as she had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

The Lady Nado would keep Babcock in check only allowing 7 second half points but the rest of Lady Comets would step up and extend the lead for a final of 60-44. Babcock finished with 28 and Tyra Bogle added 12, all scored in the second half. Peck finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Kylie Speer added 10 points on three of four shooting from beyond the arc. The Lady Nado fall to 1-4 on the year and will take on 1-4 Fort Scott for their first home league game of the season on Tuesday.

High school basketball is back in the state of Kansas tonight with two Southeast Kansas League girls games and three SEK League Boys games. Field Kindley and Independence will both have their first league games of the year tonight.

FKHS travels to Chanute to take on the Blue Comets. Nado girls are 1-3 on the season and coming off a win over Sedan. The Chanute girls are 3-1 and 1-0 in league play. The Nado boys are 0-2 on the season as they face a 3-1 Chanute team who is 1-0 in league play. Those games can be heard on Sonshine 98.9 starting at 6:00pm.

Indy will travel to Parsons as the 2-2 Lady Bulldogs will take on 0-3 Parsons and the 0-3 Indy boys will face the 3-2 Vikings. The Pittsburg at Fort Scott girls game has been postponed to January 14^th but the 1-3 Pittsburg boys will take on 2-3 Fort Scott.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association announced the sub-state assignments for high school boys and girls basketball teams.

The 4A sub-state tournament will start on February 27th and go until March 6th and Field Kindley will be in Independence along with Labette, Chanute, Independence and Parsons.

As for Caney Valley, they will be headed to Riverton with Baxter Springs, Cherryvale, Columbus, Frontenac, Galena, Girard and Riverton.

Sedan will travel two hours northwest to Garden Plain and Humboldt will host Southeast Cherokee, Erie and St. Mary's Colgan among others. 3A and 2A sub-state tournaments will go from March 1st through the 6th.

With the start of the NJCAA basketball season just weeks away, there's already a bit of hype forming around both Coffeyville's men's and women's teams.

According to the KJCCC Preseason Coaches Poll, the CCC men's team is projected to finish first in the East Division of the Jayhawk Conference, while CCC's women are projected to finish third.

The men, led by longtime head coach Jay Herkelman, are coming off of a successful 2020 campaign that included a 26-8 regular season record and a Region VI Championship.

Meanwhile, the women helped new head coach Tony Turner to a great first season, starting 11-0 and eventually finishing the regular season out at 25-7. Unfortunately, the women would see their season end in a Region VI quarterfinals loss to Barton.

Montgomery County rival Independence Community College saw its two teams projected to finish in the middle of the pack, with the men at fourth and the women at fifth. Finally, in Division II, Labette County's women were picked as the team to beat, while the men ranked fourth out of six.

CCC's men will tip-off their season January 20th with a non-conference matchup against Missouri State-West Plains. The women will start their season a week later, hitting the road to face off against West Division favorite Hutchinson.

USD #484 in Fredonia is installing a new gold and black track surface in 2021. The school district announced Monday that it was partnering with Hellas Construction to build a new epIQ Q3000 track for its student-athletes and the community.

The track will be mostly gold, with black markings covering starting areas. It will be the first gold track built by the construction company, which has its North American headquarters in Austin, Texas.

The tentative start date for the construction of the new track is scheduled for May 31st, 2021.

Kansas State signee and Field Kindley defensive back stand out Darell Jones has been selected to play in the 2021 Kansas Shrine Bowl as a part of the East squad.

Jones led the Field Kindley defense on the season with 51 tackles, two interceptions, and two sacks. Jones also contributed on offense hauling in 14 passes for nearly 300 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Also making the Shrine Bowl East team are Parsons wide receiver Tanner Barcus from Parsons, Columbus Offensive Linemen Caleb Murillo, and Girard defensive linemen Dee Wideman.

The 2021 Kansas Shrine Bowl will be played at 7:00 pm on June 26th at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kansas.
