Ravens in Contention as Second Half Nears

Jayhawk conference basketball resumes this weekend following the holiday break, with both Red Raven teams in the Top 3 in their conference title chase.

The Lady Ravens are in a tie for third place with Butler and Seward County, with a 5-2 conference record. CCC has dropped league games to Hutchinson and Cloud County, but has impressive wins over Cowley and Garden City.

Norika Welch, Karys Washington, and Karliey Parker are the top three scorers for Coffeyville, with Aubrey Hishaw, Hallie Kitchen, and Camree Johnson providing key minutes as well.

The men's team sits in third place as well, behind Cowley and Butler. The Ravens have come from behind to earn wins against Independence, Hutchinson, and Garden City.

Brian Griffith and Justin Taylor have been two of the top guards in the conference, while Rashid Kuta, Trent Ruth, Konstantin Popovic, Daniel Ntambwe, and Relja Nagulic have been among the top freshman.

Both teams return to the court on Saturday afternoon, when they head to El Dorado to battle Butler. With a win, the Lady Ravens could take sole possession of third place, and the men could move into second place.

Gonzaga Basketball Team Narrowly Avoids Plane Crash

One of Division 1's premier basketball programs suffered a close call while on a runway on their way to a game.

A private jet carrying the Gonzaga University men's basketball team nearly crossed a runway at Los Angeles International Airport, as another flight was actively taking off.

KREM News Spokane's Shannon Moudy has more on the incident from Friday.

The Bulldogs were in Los Angeles to play UCLA on Saturday, a game they would narrowly lose by three points. The team stayed in California to play Pepperdine in the league opener, winning 89-82 last night in Malibu.

Moudy says the group was completely caught off guard by the scare.

Nobody was injured, and the Bulldogs will continue to monitor the FAA investigation as it moves forward. Gonzaga returns to Washington today to face Portland on Thursday night.

Wildcats Earn Narrow Win Over Bearcats

The Kansas State Wildcats dug deep and snapped a three game skid, knocking off a ranked Cincinnati team 70-67 in the conference opener.

The Wildcats got off to a hot start, leading by nine points early in the game and holding a double digit lead later in the first half. Head Coach Jerome Tang says the Bearcats are one of the best teams they've seen this year.

KSU was led by the frontcourt duo of Coleman Hawkins and David N'Guessan, who combined for 33 points and 17 rebounds. Transfer guard Dug McDaniel also had 17 points for the 'Cats.

Tang says the group showed flashes of what they can be moving forward.

The Wildcats head on the road for the first time in league play, and will face the TCU Horned Frogs in Fort Worth on Saturday afternoon.

Jayhawks Host West Virginia to Open Conference Play

After a 9-2 non-conference slate, the Kansas Jayhawks open Big 12 play hosting the West Virginia Moutaineers at Allen Fieldhouse.

KU has won six of the last seven games against WVU, and has won 33 consecutive conference openers dating back to 1991. The last time Kansas lost a league opener was against Oklahoma on January 8th, 1991.

The Jayhawks are led by experience in both the backcourt and down low, with Hunter Dickinson, Dajuan Harris Jr, and Zeke Mayo all averaging double figures for Bill Self.

West Virginia is led by first year head coach Darian DeVries, who had six consecutive 20-win seasons at Drake, and has led the Mountaineers to a 9-2 start to the season. WVU is led by senior guard Javon Small, who averages 20 points per game. The Mountaineers will be playing shorthanded, as star senior Tucker DeVries is out indefinitely with an injury.

Coverage of Kansas-West Virginia begins tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. CT, with tipoff at 1 on Greatest Hits 104.1 FM.

Wildcats Host Cincinnati to Open Big 12 Play

The Kansas State Wildcats open conference play looking to stop the bleeding, and snap a three game skid.

KSU hosts the No. 17 Cincinnati Bearcats, who enter the matchup 10-1 on the season, and one of the top contenders in the Big 12 conference. The two teams squared off in Cincinnati last season, with the Bearcats earning a slim 74-72 win.

The Wildcats will need to rely on new faces, with newcomers combining to score 75.4 percent of the team's 859 points this season. Key players to watch out for are juniors Brendan Hausen and Dug McDaniel, and seniors Max Jones and Coleman Hawkins.

The Bearcats have one of the nation's elite defenses, ranking top-10 in the nation in field goal percentage defense, scoring defense, and 3-point defense. They are led by senior wing Simas Lukosius, who averages 15 points per game on efficient shooting. Dan Skillings Jr, Jizzle James, and Texas transfer Dillon Mitchell all provide key minutes as well.

Coverage of the KSU conference opener begins tonight at 6 p.m. CT on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

NFL Playoff Picture Becoming Clear

The final weekend of the NFL regular season is quickly approaching, and the playoff picture in both the AFC and NFC is nearly finalized.

The Kansas City Chiefs have already clinched the top overall seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs, and will be able to potentially rest starters against the Denver Broncos this weekend. The Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Los Angeles Chargers have all clinched playoff berths as well.

The final spot in the AFC comes down to the Broncos, Dolphins, and Bengals. The Broncos would be in with a win, while the Dolphins and Bengals could potentially sneak in with a Denver loss.

In the NFC, the Lions and Vikings will face off for both the NFC North Division and the top overall seed. The Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, Washington Commanders, and Green Bay Packers have all clinched playoff berths.

The NFC South Division is still up for grabs, with the winner securing the final playoff spot. Tampa Bay holds the edge at the moment, and would be in with a win over New Orleans. The Atlanta Falcons would win the division with a win and Tampa loss.

The NFL Playoffs begin with Wild Card Weekend, with games taking place on January 11th, 12th, and 13th.

Jalon Daniels to Return to KU in 2025

The Kansas Jayhawks will have a familiar face under center for the 2025 season.

Quarterback Jalon Daniels has agreed to a new deal to remain a Jayhawk, and play his final season of eligibility in Lawrence in 2025.

Daniels revealed the announcement on his social media, stating "I'm ready to lead the Kansas Jayhawks into the 2025 season and fully focused on becoming the best QB possible. I'm staying to finish what we've started, continue building, and to give back to the fans who've given us everything."

Daniels has nearly 7,000 passing yards and 45 passing touchdowns during his time at KU, both of those marks ranking second in school history.

The Jayhawks will look to bounce back from a disappointing 5-7 season in 2024, and continue the momentum from winning four of their final six games.

K-State Earns Comeback Victory in Rate Bowl

Dylan Edwards ran for 196 yards, including a 36-yard run in the fourth quarter; Kansas State came back from being down 17 points in the third quarter to defeat Rutgers 44-41 in the Rate Bowl last night.

The Scarlet Knights led by 10 at halftime and went up 34-17 on Ja'shon Benjamin's 7-yard touchdown catch on the opening drive of the second half. But Edwards and the Wildcats came back.

Edwards scored on 65-yard touchdown run and, after an interception thrown by Rutgers’ Athan Kaliakmanis, Garrett Oakley caught a 13-yard touchdown pass to pull Kansas State within five.

Rutgers briefly regained increased their lead, going up 41-29 early in the fourth quarter on Antwan Raymond's 1-yard TD run.

Kansas State answered with Avery Johnson's 9-yard touchdown pass to Jadon Jackson, followed by Edwards' 36-yard touchdown run.

Rutgers luck ran out, as they turned it over on downs with just under two minutes left.

Rutgers had 82 yards of offense in the second half after racking up 319 in the first.

Johnson threw for 195 yards and three touchdowns on 15-of-30 passing in the Rate Bowl, including 57 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.

Chiefs Lock Up #1 Seed in AFC After Defeating Steelers

The Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-10 Wednesday to not only reach 15-1 on the season, but clinch the top seed in the AFC and get a first round bye and home field advantage in the playoffs.

Mahomes, who was 29-of-38 for 320 yards and three touchdowns, says three games in eleven days shows a lot of toughness from the team.

Mahomes has a high ankle sprain; defensive tackle Chris Jones didn't play in Pittsburgh because of a strained calf, and the Chiefs hope to get offensive tackle D.J. Humphries back in time for the postseason.

The 19-point margin of victory was the largest of the season for the Chiefs. Even without Jones, Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was sacked five times, intercepted once, and forced a Pittsburgh fumble.

Mahomes was encouraged by the offense, with Hollywood Brown and rookie Xavier Worthy combining for 12 catches for 125 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers. Mahomes says the offense is peaking at the right time.

Tight end Travis Kelce had eight catches, and his 12-yard scoring catch in the fourth quarter set a team record for career touchdown receptions with 77.

The Chiefs have one regular-season game left; it's against the Broncos in Denver. No word on how many starters will actually play.

MLB & Umpires Reach Agreement

Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Umpires Association have agreed on a new five-year collective bargaining agreement, pending ratification by umpires and owners next month.

The new agreement means the testing of an automated ball-strike system during spring training next year. One of the final steps was working out specifics with the MLBUA.

The umpires union says the contract is fair, and they will continue to work hard to build relationships with players, managers and owners into a partnership with open communications. They look forward to the continued positive growth in the game in the years to come.

NCAA Adds Eligibility

The NCAA Division I Board of Directors approves a blanket waiver granting an additional year of eligibility to former junior college transfers.

The waiver helps those like Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, a former junior college transfer who played his first season at Vanderbilt in 2024, to pursue an additional year of college eligibility next fall. The memo from the NCAA extends an extra year of eligibility in 2025-26 to athletes who previously "competed at a non-NCAA school for one or more years", therefore having no NCAA eligibility following the 2024-25 season.

The decision from the NCAA comes five days after a federal judge in Tennessee granted an injunction to allow Pavia more eligibility, a ruling the NCAA is appealing.

Pavia's lawsuit against the NCAA states eligibility standards in place violates antitrust laws by restricting an athlete's ability to profit from their name, image, and likeness.

The waiver is only extended to those who would have completed their NCAA eligibility this year. Under the new waiver, Pavia will be granted a sixth year of NCAA eligibility next fall.

Pavia and the Commodores take on Georgia Tech in the Birmingham Bowl Friday.

In a memo released last night, NJCAA President and CEO Dr. Christopher Parker says the NJCAA full supports the waiver being granted to all two year college student athletes like Diego Pavia.

Bullpups Sweep Bulldoggers in Basketball Doubleheader

The Caney Valley Bullpups sweep the Dewey Bulldoggers in high school baseball action tonight in Caney. The girls won 49-46, while the guys won 76-66.

It was a close contest for most of the girls game; the score was tied at halftime and tied again at the end of the third quarter. Dewey had a chance to tie with .5 seconds remaining in regulation, but couldn't get the shot off.
Elyn Washburn led Caney with 12 points and Sarah Martinez added 11 for the Lady Pups, who improved to 4-0 as the head into Christmas break. Molleigh Kaminska and Gracie Eden had seven points apiece.
For the guys, points in the paint was a big difference the game. Ben Matthews led Caney in scoring with 19 points, followed by Peyton Darden with 17. Colt Hightower and Gavin Messner had 13 points apiece.
Dewey led 32-26 at the half, but early fouls caught up with the Bulldoggers. Four players fouled out in the 4th quarter.
Caney improves to 2-2 as they head into Christmas break.
Caney will be back in action Tuesday, January 7th, as Nowata comes to town for a doubleheader.

Mahomes on Track to Play vs Texans

It appears that the Kansas City Chiefs will take the field tomorrow with their QB1 leading the charge.

Following three days of practice, and treatment for a high ankle sprain suffered last weekend against the Browns, Patrick Mahomes is presumed to be available for the game against the Texans.

Head Coach Andy Reid says Mahomes is trending towards playing.

The Chiefs have a magic number of 2 to clinch home field advantage throughout the playoffs, but the Texans display one of the league's top defensive fronts, second in the NFL in sacks being led by stars Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr.

ESPN Insider Stephen A Smith says he's not sure the Chiefs are making the right big picture decision.

Mahomes and the Chiefs host the Texans at Arrowhead Stadium, with coverage beginning at 11 a.m. on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

Jayhawks Looking to Build Momentum

The Kansas Jayhawks are looking for their ninth win of the season, and to build momentum for conference play, when they host the Brown University Bears this weekend.

This will be the third all-time meeting between the two schools, with the Jayhawks winning convincingly in both 1989 and 1997.

KU played a strong 40 minutes in a win over NC State last weekend, rebounding from two road losses to Crieghton and Missouri. This will be the final non-conference game of the season for the team, before they open Big 12 play with West Virginia on December 31st.

Coverage of KU and Brown begins Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. CT on Greatest Hits 104.1 FM.

Hutchinson Wins 2nd National Title

For the second time under Head Coach Drew Dallas, the Hutchinson Blue Dragons have reached the top of the mountain.

The Blue Dragons won the Division 1 NJCAA National Championship, rallying to defeat the Iowa Western Reivers 28-23 in Canyon, Texas.

The Dragons had to rally from an early two touchdown deficit, and outscored the Reivers 21-0 in the third quarter. Despite a late touchdown and blocked field goal from Iowa Western, the Hutch defense was able to get the stop they needed to win it all.

Dallas says this is an incredible reward for everyone in the building.

Hutchinson finishes the season 11-1, with their only loss coming to co-conference champion Butler in late October.

Potential Rule Change Could Allow Full Eligibility for JUCO Athletes

A recent development in the college football landscape could provide long term benefits for JUCO athletes.

Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, a former JUCO player at New Mexico Military, was granted an extra year of eligibility by a Tennessee judge after filing a lawsuit against the NCAA.

The verdict could potentially open up the possibility that JUCO athletes would not lose NCAA eligibility during their time at the JUCO level. CCC Athletic Director Bryce Saia says this could completely shift the landscape of college athletics.

The NCAA has been asked to elaborate on their classification of the fifth-year eligibility by the end of the spring semester. Saia says the next steps are not really known yet.

Pavia won a national title while at the JUCO level, and led Vandy to a win over Alabama earlier this season.

Hutchinson Battles Iowa Western for National Championship

A JUCO National Champion will be crowned tonight in Texas, and the Hutchinson Blue Dragons are representing the Jayhawk Conference in the game.

Hutchinson is 10-1 on the season, with their only loss coming to the Butler Grizzlies in late October. They will square off with the Iowa Western Reivers, who is looking to win their third consecutive national championship. Hutch beat Iowa Western 39-38 in the regular season.

Blue Dragon Head Coach Drew Dallas says this is the stage you want to get to.

Star quarterback Samari Collier returns from injury and is expected to start tonight. Running back Waymond Jordan Jr. recently was named the JUCO Weekly award winner, which goes to the nation's top junior college football player. Jordan says it's a reflection of the entire team's effort.

The Blue Dragons and Reivers kick off at 7:30 p.m. CT in Canyon, Texas, and the game can be watched on ESPNU.

Nado Boys Beat Pittsburg for First Time Under Walker

The Coffeyville boys improve to 4-1 with a win at Pittsburg 64-55.

Pittsburg would control the game early with the Nado struggling to find any rhythm on offense. The Nado shot 11 more times than the Dragons in the first half but only made one more basket shooting 30% from the field. Despite the offensive struggles Coffeyville would lead by one 24-23 at the half.

Jake Horner would take over for the Nado in the third and extend Coffeyville's lead up to 12. Horner scored 10 of his 20 points in the third. The Dragons weren't going away easily and went on a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter. With the lead down to three, KeShawn Hayes would hit a massive three to get the lead back to six and put a stop to the Dragon's run. Hayes also finished with 20, scoring 10 in the fourth.

Lady Nado Make it Three in a Row

The Lady Nado make it three in a row and a 1-0 start in league play with a 53-42 win on the road at Pittsburg.

After a cold start to the game, the Lady Nado settled in on both sides of the ball. Lopez would hit five straight shots, all off turnovers, to help Coffeyville hold a 25-21 lead at the half.

The Nado would extend their lead to double digits in the third, outscoring Pittsburg 15-9 in the quarter. The Dragons would start to grab some momentum in fourth courtesy of Mackenzie English, who finished with 26. A Kaylin Caron three off a great pass from her sister Taiylor would end the Dragon's run and help Coffeyville secure the victory.

The Lady Nado move to 3-2 on the year and are off until their next league matchup on January 7th against rival Independence.

Caney Sweeps Sedan in Basketball Doubleheader

The Caney Valley Bullpups took both games at Sedan last night in high school basketball action. The Lady Pups won 58-28, and the guys took home a 75-41 victory.

The Lady Pups used height to their advantage with great rebounding by Sarah Martinez and Molleigh Kaminska, and the press defense was effective against the lady Devil offense, causing multiple steals, including five by Ameris King-Dunn. Elyn Washburn and Myra Denny were effecient at the point, with key assists from Gracie Eden and Addison Regis.

The guys also used height to their advantage, with big men Ben Matthews, Peyton Darden and James Kistler crashing the boards on both sides of the ball, and making key buckets in the first half. KSU is 6-3 on the season, but has come up short in their matchups with most NCAA Tournament contenders thus far. The Bulldogs are unbeaten so far this season, with wins over the Miami Hurricanes and the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Head Coach Jerome Tang says the Bulldogs are full of experience.

Drake also displays one of the best defenses in the nation, allowing under 60 points per game. Tang says they are one of the best at controlling the pace.

Coverage of KSU and Drake begins tonight at 6 p.m. CT on the Mighty 690, KGGF.

More information is available on the ankle injury to Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes exited in the fourth quarter of the win over the Cleveland Browns after being rolled up on following a throw. He is considered week-to-week with three games remaining until the playoffs.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter says there may be other factors than the injury that contribute to a decision on Mahomes.

On the men's side, a back and forth thriller narrowly went the way of the Tigers, with Cowley earning a 64-63 win. Justin Taylor had a shot for the win as time expired, but it bounced off the front rim.

Assistant Coach Jordan Bailey says despite the loss, the season is off to a very good start.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes left in the fourth quarter after being rolled up on, and would not return. He says he decided to approach the situation with caution.

Mahomes is considered week to week moving forward, with his status for Saturday's game with Houston up in the air. Head Coach Andy Reid says it's too early to know about the overall significance of the injury.

It was a much needed performance for a team that had dropped consecutive games to Creighton and Missouri, and the Jayhawks improve to 8-2 on the season. It was the 20th straight nonconference home win for KU, and the team is a perfect 6-0 at Allen Fieldhouse this season.

KU will be back in action on Sunday, when they host the Brown University Bears out of the Ivy League.

Ravens Welcome Cowley in First Half Finale

The Red Ravens complete their first half of the schedule with a home doubleheader against the Cowley Tigers.

There is an illuminated Coffeyville sign, as well as cold tubs for the players, and quotes and accomplishments lining the walls. Herkelman says he gained inspiration for the locker room from a variety of places.

Ravens Split Doubleheader with Cloud County

There were mixed results for the Red Ravens at Nellis Hall, with the teams splitting a doubleheader with the Cloud County Thunderbirds.

The Lady Ravens got off to a slow start, trailing by 19 points after the opening quarter, and couldn't bounce back in an 81-55 loss. Head Coach Tony Turner says Cloud was better prepared than the Ravens.

Coffeyville was led by Karys Washington, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds, but the team struggled mightily with turnovers, committing 22 giveaways on the night. Turner says the team must improve before Saturday's game.

The men remain unbeaten in league play, using a big first half to edge the Thunderbirds 84-68. Relja Nagulic had 20 points off the bench, and freshman Kaason Thomas had 15 points on five made three-pointers. Assistant Coach Braeden Proctor says the team's depth is impressive.

The Ravens will square off with Cowley on Saturday, in a matchup of two of the final three undefeated teams in the conference. Proctor says the Tigers are just as good as they're hyped up to be.

Coverage of Cowley-Coffeyville begins Saturday at 1:30 p.m. CT on US 98 and the Red Raven Sports Network.

WTRF Wheeling's Baylee Martin has more information on the return of Rich Rod to the Moutaineers.

Rodriguez was one of the most successful coaches in WVU history, having three 10-win seasons, and coming one game away from a national championship appearance in 2007. He departed Morgantown for Michigan, where he lasted three seasons before being replaced by Brady Hoke.

Rodriguez is replacing Neal Brown, who was relieved of his duties after six seasons in Morgantown.

Coffeyville kept things close early as both teams traded the lead back and forth in the first quarter. Fairland was cold shooting from the floor in the first half shooting 7/37 from the floor but finished 4/7. Three of those four baskets were threes from Aubri Kinsey off the bench which help the Owls take a commanding first half lead.

Coffeyville went cold from the floor in the second half, but picked up the intensity defensively forcing several Fairland turnovers. Unfortunately, for the Lady Nado they couldn't capitalize on the turnovers keeping the Fairland lead to around 10 for most of the second half.

Coffeyville moves to the loser side of the bracket and will take on Nowata at 4:00pm on Friday. The Nado boys will follow taking on Oklahoma Union. Both games can be heard on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

Nado Fall to Oologah in Game One of Nowata Tournament

Field Kindley falls in their first game of the Nowata Tournament with a 61-60 loss to Oologah.

After a back and forth start to the game, the Nado would quickly find themselves down 10 in the first quarter. The Mustangs would stretch that lead to 14 point in the second before a later quarter run by Coffeyville to cut Oologah's lead down to 34-26 at the half.

A cold start shooting in the second half for Coffeyville would see Oologah get their lead back up to double digits. A three by Jake Horner provided a much-needed spark for the Nado who shot 52% in the second half and trimmed the Mustangs lead down to three with just under a minute left in the game.

Horner would cut the lead to one with 26 seconds left and a turnover a foul would send Aaron Tunstall to free throw line. Tunstall would hit one of two free throw tying up the game at 60-60. The Nado had a chance to win it but couldn't the shot to fall and Oologah was fouled on their attempt at a game winning shot. Jadden Tanner would hit one of his two free throws giving the Mustangs the lead with seven seconds left. Horner had a shot at the win but couldn't get it to fall. Horner lead all scorers with 23.

The Nado will play on Friday at 5:30pm awaiting the loser of Fairland and Oklahoma Union.

The Nado boys are coming off a 13-8 record but lost five seniors from last year's team. There are a lot of question marks around the starting lineup for this team and they are looking for Seniors Jake Horner, Ke'Shawn Hayes, Aaron Tunstall and Carter Herring to step up.

The Yellow Jackets went 13-7 last season, led by a group of players that mostly return for the new season. Head Coach Dee Barnett will lean on returners with varsity experience, including his sons Elias and Kamden.

Barnett says it takes effort to find the balance between coach and dad.

Fredonia finished the season by winning eight of their final nine games, and winning multiple games by narrow margins. Barnett says the team tries to take each day one play at a time.

Fredonia opens the season at home against the rival Neodesha Blue Streaks on Friday night.

A Red Raven sophomore has been named the KJCCC Conference Player of the Week.

Point guard Brian Griffith was the best scorer in the conference this past week, scoring a career-high 29 points in a win over Independence, before a new career-high 30 in a win over Arkansas State-Newport.

Griffith shot 52% from the field in the two games, and converted on six of 13 3-point attempts.

The sophomore is averaging 14.9 points per game this season, and leads the team in scoring thus far this season.

Hutchinson Prepares to Host Red Ravens

A nationally recognized junior college rivalry is renewed on the basketball court tomorrow night, when the Hutchinson Blue Dragons host the Coffeyville Red Ravens in doubleheader action.

The women's game features a battle of undefeated teams, with Coffeyville 8-0 on the season, and defending national champion Hutchinson 10-0 thus far in their quest for a repeat. The Red Ravens will be playing their first game in eight days, and Hutchinson Head Coach John Ontjes says he's not sure what to expect.

Coffeyville is the most recent team to defeat the Lady Dragons, back in the 2022-23 Region VI Quarterfinals. Ontjes says the Lady Ravens always bring one of their toughest games.

On the men's side, a matchup of talented teams may be overshadowed by a matchup of Hall of Famer Jay Herkelman, against his former assistant coach Kyle Fisher, who is in his first season as head coach at Hutchinson.

Fisher previously served as Head Coach at Butler for five seasons, and has had success against Herkelman in recent years. Fisher says he always has this game circled.

The Dragons feature a nice blend of size, speed, and athleticism. Fisher says the Ravens are a very tough and talented team.

Neodesha Girls Look for Another Strong Season

High school basketball is just days away in Southeast Kansas, and the Neodesha Lady Streaks are looking for another strong season.

The team is led by experienced upperclassmen, including seniors Prayer Roebuck, Samantha Stover, and Darcie Dyke, and juniors Alivia Morrison and Kimmy Combs.

Head Coach Justin Pierce says Roebuck is a special kind of athlete.

With so much experience in the backcourt, the Lady Streaks have options at the point guard position with how to run their offense. Pierce says that's an advantage that most other teams don't have.

Neodesha opens their season on the road against Fredonia on Friday night.

Chiefs Clinch Playoff Berth, Face Questions

The Kansas City Chiefs became the first team in the NFL to clinch a playoff berth, improving to 11-1 on the season after a 19-17 win over the Raiders.

Las Vegas fumbled with 11 seconds on the clock that ensured the Kansas City victory, their second consecutive narrow win over a struggling team. Five of the Chiefs' 11 victories this season have been decided on the final play.

It wasn't perfect, however, with the offensive line having major struggles against the Raider front four, leading to the benching of left tackle Wanya Morris. Good Morning Football's Peter Schrager says this is a serious concern for the defending champions.

Kansas City has found ways to overcome adversity with their experience and clutch time performances. Schrager says, however, this isn't quite as easy of a fix.

The Chiefs can clinch their ninth straight AFC West title with a win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

Multiple Raven Football Players Named All-Conference

The 2024 KJCCC All-Conference teams have been revealed, with more than 15 Red Ravens earning honors.

Two Ravens were named first-team all-conference, with tight end Brec Long and offensive lineman Casey Jean-Baptiste representing CCC on the top squad.

Seven more Red Ravens were placed on second-team, with running back Tre Jones, offensive lineman Da'Jy'Quwan Jackson, offensive lineman Khalil Walker, defensive end D.J. Jackson, defensive end Fred Giles, cornerback Cyler Christmas, and punter Brady Braun.

Nine members of the team were named Honorable Mention, including wide receivers Ty Durham and Jalile Bost, linebacker K.J. Johnson, safety L.J. Hall, linebacker Marquis Lane-Owens, offensive lineman Eric Lane, offensive lineman Devon Waller, tight end Cam Paul, and kicker Roan McCarthy.

The Red Ravens travel to Texas to take on #6 Navarro in the Champs Heart of Texas Bowl on Saturday afternoon.

Ravens Win Final Non-Conference Game

The Red Ravens wrap up their non-conference portion of the season with a 69-53 win over the Arkansas State-Newport Aviators.

Coffevyille struggled at times on the offensive end, but were led by strong defense and a career high 30 points from sophomore Brian Griffith.

Griffith has become a big moment player for the Ravens, frequently getting shots and plays in key moments of games. Assistant Coach Braeden Proctor says it's because he puts in the work.

The Owensboro, Kentucky product has also emerged as a captain for the team, stepping up to encourage the younger players on and off the court. Griffith says the growth for him as a leader stems from struggles.

The Red Ravens have won seven of their last eight games, and sit at 7-2 on the season. Coffeyville is one of three remaining unbeatens in conference play, along with Cowley and Butler.

CCC will travel to Hutchinson to take on the Blue Dragons on Wednesday night. Proctor says the key will be winning the physical battle.

Coverage of CCC-Hutchinson begins Wednesday night at 5 p.m. CT on US 98.
