The Caney Valley Bullpups and Cherryvale Chargers split a basketball doubleheader tonight in Cherryvale; the Cherryvale girls defeated Caney 70-64 in overtime, while the Caney boys won convincingly 97-32.
In the girls game, Caney dominated the paint in the 1st half, with Sarah Martinez scoring the Lady Pups first eight points. Caney took a 40-28 lead at halftime, but Cherryvale's press helped them in a 2nd half comeback. Tatum Marchant hit a 3 pointer to tie the game at 58 and send it to overtime. Cherryvale outscored Caney 12 to 6 in overtime to come away with the win.
Sarah Martinez led Caney with 25 points, followed by Elyn Washburn with 18 and Molleigh Kaminska with 11. Caney falls to 11-4 while Cherryvale improves to 13-2 on the season.
In the guys game, five Bullpups scored in double figures, led by Traxcyn Garton with 20 points, including three consecutive 3's in the 2nd quarter. Layne Denny had 16, Gavin Messner had 15, Colt Hightower had 14, and Peyton Darden added 13 in Caney's 8th consecutive win to improve to 12-3 on the season. Caney scored 21 in the 1st quarter, 35 in the 2nd and 30 in the 3rd quarter to pull away from the Chargers.
The Bullpups will be back in action Thursday night as they take on Fredonia at home.
