The West Elk Patriots kick off their 2025 season this week, with a new head coach on the sidelines for the first time since 2001.
Ian Denton takes over as Patriots' head coach, following the retirement of Chris Haag after 25 seasons, and 131 wins in Howard. Denton says Haag has taken the program to new heights.
West Elk has been one of the most successful teams in Southeast Kansas in recent years, with four consecutive seasons with eight wins, and back-to-back seasons with nine wins. Denton says the expectations remain the same for the program.
With the exception of two consecutive home games in October, the Patriots alternate home and road games each week this season. Denton says he believes that could be an advantage for the team.
West Elk opens the season on the road Friday night against Argonia/Attica.
