Willie Mays Passes Away at 93

One of the greatest icons in baseball history has passed away.

Willie Mays, known by many as the "Say Hey Kid" died Tuesday at the age of 93. He was the oldest living Hall of Fame member in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Mays began his career in the Negro Leagues in 1948, and was voted into the Hall of Fame in 1979, his first year of eligibility. He is widely considered one of the sport's greatest players, making 24 All-Star teams, winning two National League MVPs, and 12 gold glove awards.

Mays made one of the greatest plays in baseball history, with an over the shoulder grab at the Polo Grounds to save the game in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series. The Giants would go on to win the World Series that year.

Mays ranks sixth in baseball history in home runs with 660, and is seventh all-time in runs scored, 12th all-time in runs batted in, and 13th in hits. His jersey is retired by the Giants, and the team plays at Oracle Park, which is located on Willie Mays Plaza.

Major League Baseball will honor the legacy of Mays during a game between the Cardinals and Giants, which will be played at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, to pay tribute to the Negro Leagues.
