Bullpups Race Past Riverton for Seventh Straight Win

The Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis traveled to Riverton to take on a familiar Rams foe they had faced twice last year, racing out to a 32-0 lead before finishing with a 62-14 victory for their seventh straight win.

Jace Buckley got the scoring started with a six-yard plunge into the end zone and doubled Caney Valley’s lead with a 12-yard score to put the Bullpups ahead 16-0.

The passing game heated up on a frigid night, as Layne Denny found Konner Paulie on two touchdown throws, one from 36 yards down the middle of the field and the other from 22 yards away on a pinpoint pass to the deep left corner of the end zone. Paulie also added an interception to his night on a stellar juggling catch to pick off Rams quarterback Aydin Witherspoon.

Caney Valley’s 32-0 lead was cut by the Rams late in the first half, but the Bullpups continued their offensive surge after the break, adding several more rushing scores, including a 55-yard touchdown run by freshman Lane Wheatley.

Denny finished the night with more than 100 passing yards and three touchdown tosses. Davis says the quarterback is playing extremely well, and the Bullpups will continue to focus on controlling the line of scrimmage and time of possession.

With one regular-season game remaining, Davis says the 47 players on his roster are an unselfish group willing to do what it takes to win football games.

Caney Valley will return in Week 8 to take on district opponent Galena, looking to finish the regular season on a high note before postseason play. Pregame coverage against the Lions will begin Friday at 6:30 pm with kickoff at 7 on US 98.

Coffeyville Falls at Emporia

The Field Kindley High School football team falls on the road to Emporia 40-16.

The Spartans got off to a fast start scoring on their second play of the game after a 54 yard pass and a six yard run.  Emporia would score on all six of their first half possessions and lead at the break 40-0.

The Nado were able to find the endzone in the second half on a one yard Kobi Kirk QB keeper.  The touchdown was setup by a 37 yard catch by Aidan Stultz on a trick play WR pass by Carsten Voss.  Kirk would add one more touchdown as time expired with a one yard touchdown run.

The Nado fall to 0-7 on the season.  Coffeyville returns home next week to wrap up the regular season against Fort Scott on Senior Night.

Caney Valley Looks to Keep Perfect Record Intact in Week 7

The Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis head into Week 7 with a 6-0 record after taking down Cherryvale 46-0 last Friday.

The win marks Caney Valley’s ninth straight victory over the Chargers, as the Bullpups remain undefeated in district play.

With a big lead in the third quarter, Caney Valley was able to rotate in several underclassmen, and Davis says the depth of this team is likely the strongest he’s had during his time as head coach.

The Bullpups will hit the road this week to face another district opponent in the Riverton Rams. Davis says it’s a game his team can’t take for granted, especially after Riverton jumped out to a 14-0 lead when the two teams met in the postseason last year.

Caney Valley is one of seven 2A football teams still undefeated and will look to keep its perfect record intact against a senior-heavy Riverton squad seeking its fourth win. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

Jayhawks, Wildcats Prepare for Sunflower Showdown After Losses

The Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats will meet this Saturday in the Sunflower Showdown, with both teams looking to bounce back after losses to ranked opponents.

Kansas will be on the road for the second straight week after a 41-24 loss to Utah. The Jayhawks battled back to cut the deficit to three points in the third quarter against the No. 12 team in college football but couldn’t score late to get back into the game.

Head coach Lance Leipold says his team needs to figure out how to play a full four quarters after an uneven performance against the Utes.

The Jayhawks sit at 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play. Kansas is also looking for its first win over K-State since 2008, when the Jayhawks defeated the Wildcats 52-21. Pregame coverage begins at 9 a.m., with kickoff set for 11 on Classic Hits 104.1.

K-State is coming off a loss of its own after falling 35-16 at home to the No. 22 Houston Cougars. Head coach Collin Klein says the Wildcats need to do a better job of extending drives on offense and getting off the field on third down defensively.

The Wildcats have won 17 straight games against Kansas, including a 42-17 victory on the road last season. Pregame coverage begins at 10 a.m., with kickoff set for 11 on the Mighty 690.

Red Ravens Face Top-Ranked Blue Dragons at Home

The Coffeyville Red Ravens will host the red-hot Hutchinson Blue Dragons in a matchup between the No. 1 team in the NJCAA and a Coffeyville squad looking to revive its season.

Despite last week’s loss to Butler, head coach Nick Dobler says his team continues to show a high level of fight, even when things don’t go its way. Five of the Ravens’ seven games this season have been decided by just one possession.

Hutchinson comes into the matchup undefeated in KJCCC play, and the Red Ravens will look to cool off the Blue Dragons while earning their first win over Hutchinson since 2021. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on the Mighty 690.

Salmon, Sims Stand Out Despite Fredonia Loss

The Fredonia Yellowjackets and head coach Lucas Lanning fell to Prairie View 41-6 on the road, dropping to 1-5 on the year.

Fredonia got off to a quick start with a touchdown on its opening drive but was held scoreless over the final three quarters by the Buffalos.

Lanning says quarterback Griffyn Salmon had a strong game through the air, while safety Zeke Sims finished with 19 tackles. However, the Yellowjackets lost some steam in the second half, as Prairie View’s larger roster helped the Buffalos maintain their energy over the final 24 minutes.

The Yellowjackets will face Central Heights in Week 7, and Lanning says his defense will need to improve its tackling, particularly in open space.

This Friday will mark Fredonia’s final home game of the season, as the Yellowjackets look to pick up their second win before closing out the year on the road against Neodesha.

Leck Leads Efficient Passing Attack in Neodesha Victory

The Neodesha Bluestreaks and head coach Nathan West bounced back from their Week 5 loss with a 55-22 win over 4-1 Humboldt last Friday.

The game was close early, with Neodesha holding just a five-point lead in the second quarter, but the Bluestreaks caught fire, scoring 22 points over the next 12 minutes to take a commanding lead into halftime.

West says his team played well and did a good job of fighting through adversity, especially after several players went down with injuries early in the game.

Quarterback Tayte Leck also turned in an efficient performance through the air, completing 14 of 16 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. West praised the sophomore for his strong play and his role in leading the passing attack.

Neodesha will hit the road for its final road game of the season against Jayhawk-Linn, looking to improve to 6-1 against the 3-3 Jayhawks.

Area Volleyball Teams Prepare for 3A Regional Play

High school volleyball is nearing the end of its regular season, as regional play is less than a week away and will start on Monday, October 19.

In 3A volleyball, regional tournaments are hosted by the top four seeded schools, with seeding based on winning percentage. The 64 teams are split into four regional assignments, each consisting of 16 teams divided into four-team pools. Every team plays the other teams in its pool, and the top two finishers in each pool advance to substate.

According to the latest seedings posted on the KSHSAA website, Neodesha sits at No. 3 and is in line to host a regional. The Bluestreaks will share a pool with Caney Valley, Burlington and Osawatomie, while Caney Valley is seeded sixth.

Fredonia is seeded seventh and will play in a pool with Riverton, Anderson County and Columbus. Cherryvale sits at No. 16 and will compete in a pool with Galena, Central Heights and Iola.

For any readers interested in a more in-depth explanation of regional seeding and tournament rules, visit the KSHSAA website.

Cherryvale Looks to Rebound Against Humboldt

The Cherryvale Chargers and head coach Harry Hester fell to 3-3 on the year after a 46-0 loss on the road to rival Caney Valley.

The Chargers were looking to bounce back from a 35-6 loss to Baxter Springs in Week 5 but struggled to find the end zone on Friday night.

Hester says his team moved the ball well offensively but made a few mistakes near the red zone that stalled some promising drives.

With just one senior and 15 juniors on the roster, several underclassmen have had opportunities to contribute, including sophomores Brock Carrico and Remington John. Hester says the younger players continue to grow, and he’s excited about the experience they’re gaining this season.

The Chargers will hit the road this Friday to face Humboldt, looking to get back in the win column against a 4-2 Cubs squad.

West Elk Anticipates Reinforcements Ahead of Week 7

The West Elk Patriots and head coach Ian Denton are coming off a 60-6 loss to Yates Center in Week 6.

The Patriots scored on their opening possession, but a few miscues allowed the Wildcats to pull ahead and take a sizable lead into halftime.

Denton says his team continues to improve and learn what it takes to compete, especially against teams with senior-heavy rosters.

West Elk expects to get several players back from injury in Week 7 after missing key athletes for much of the season. Denton says the Patriots will also continue expanding the roles of underclassmen who have stepped up in their absence.

West Elk’s JV team finished the season undefeated after wrapping up its final game, while the varsity squad will hit the road this Friday to face South Sumner, looking for its second win of the season.

Nado Girl's Golf Headed to State

The Field Kindley High School girls golf team is headed to the state tournament following a second-place finish at Sub-State.

Competing on their home course at Coffeyville Country Club, the Nado finished with a team score of 373 to secure second place and advance to state. Jessica Zimmerman led the way for Coffeyville, finishing tied for third place. Avery Sells tied for seventh, while Josie Murdock finished 13th and Addison Watts placed 14th. Kennadi Freedle tied for 15th and Halle Tatman finished 18th.

The state tournament berth comes less than a week after Coffeyville captured its second consecutive Southeast Kansas League championship in Pittsburg on October 6th. Zimmerman won the individual SEK championship, followed by Sells in second place. Watts finished third following a playoff, while Murdock placed fifth, Freedle seventh and Tatman 13th. The State Tournament is scheduled for October 19th and 20th at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson.

Oswego Continues Dominant Season With 61-12 Victory

The Oswego Indians and head coach Matt Fowler secured a 61-12 home victory over the Erie Red Devils on Friday night.

The win moves Oswego to 6-0 on the season following the non-district matchup. The Indians also hold a three-game lead over the next closest team in their district standings in 8-man football.

Oswego took down West Elk in Week 5, and Fowler says the defense was the standout, allowing just four first downs and 21 rushing yards on 45 carries. He also praised special teams for coming up with a big play on a punt return for a touchdown.

Heading into the matchup with Erie, Fowler says the Indians needed to be ready for a big, physical team and find a way to slow down the Red Devils’ star running back, Quincy Brown.

The Indians will hit the road one last time in the regular season, traveling to take on the Southeast Lancers. Oswego will look to move to 7-0 against a Southeast team aiming to secure a winning regular season.

Erie Looks to Get Back Above .500 Against Wildcats

The Erie Red Devils and head coach David Pitts fell on the road to the Oswego Indians, 61-12, on Friday night.

Erie was looking to hand Oswego its first loss of the year, but the Indians’ offense jumped out to an early lead they would never relinquish.

Pitts says his team moved the ball well but was unable to punch it into the end zone. He also says the Red Devils worked on throwing the ball and moving players around late in the game to prepare for next Friday.

The Red Devils will face Yates Center in Week 7, and Pitts says they’ll have to be ready for the Wildcats’ quick-footed quarterback and hard-nosed running back.

Friday’s matchup will be Erie’s final home regular-season contest, as the Red Devils look to move back above .500 when they clash with the 3-3 Wildcats.

Jayhawks Take Down No. 24 Colorado to Reach 10 Wins

The Kansas women’s soccer team reached its 10th win of the season after taking down No. 24 Colorado, 1-0, on Sunday.

After 83 minutes of scoreless play, sophomore Jordan Rowan fired a shot into the top-left corner of the net. A deflection off a Colorado player helped the ball find its way in, giving Kansas the lead and securing the road victory.

Head coach Nate Lie says it was a typical Sunday matchup where he knew it would take grit and heart to come away with a win, especially against a physical Colorado team that puts pressure on its opponents.

The Jayhawks went 2-1 on their road trip, with stops in Waco and Manhattan. Lie says his team will take a well-deserved rest and hopes to use the win over Colorado to build momentum heading into the final five games of the regular season.

Kansas is vying for a spot near the top of the Big 12 and will return home this Friday to Rock Chalk Park, where it remains unbeaten this season. The Jayhawks will host Iowa State, looking to improve to 5-1-1 in conference play, with kickoff set for 6 p.m.

Jayhawks, Wildcats Turn Attention to Sunflower Showdown After Losses

Both the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas State Wildcats fell to ranked opponents on Saturday as they turn their attention to this weekend’s Sunflower Showdown.

K-State hosted No. 22 Houston at 2:30 p.m., but the Cougars jumped out to a big lead they would never surrender, handing the Wildcats a 35-16 loss at home and dropping them to 3-2 on the season.

Head coach Collin Klein says his offense struggled to find a rhythm on the ground and through the air, failing to put itself in good positions to move the chains. He also says the defense couldn’t find ways to make life difficult for the Cougars.

The Wildcats fall to 0-2 in conference play but will look to bounce back this Saturday when they host Kansas. Pregame coverage begins at 9 a.m., with kickoff set for 11 on the Mighty 690.

The Jayhawks traveled to Utah and battled the Utes before falling 41-24, dropping to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Big 12 play.

Head coach Lance Leipold says his team still believes it’s in a good spot despite the loss, but needs to improve in key moments to get over the hump.

Kansas will hit the road for the second straight week, heading to Manhattan this Saturday to take on the Wildcats. Pregame coverage begins at 9 a.m., with kickoff set for 11 on Classic Hits 104.1.

Red Ravens Drop 29-28 Rivalry Battle on Stadium Anniversary

The Coffeyville Red Ravens and head coach Nick Dobler fell to Butler 29-28 in a rivalry game on the 25th anniversary of Veterans Memorial Stadium, dropping to 2-5 on the season.

John Nicholas opened the scoring with a 14-yard scramble, diving inside the right pylon for his first rushing touchdown of the year to make it 7-0.

After a field goal by the Grizzlies, Messiah Cage caught a five-yard touchdown pass from Nicholas to make it 14-3 before another three points from Butler cut the lead to eight heading into halftime.

Coffeyville recorded its first defensive touchdown of the year on a blocked punt return, extending its lead to 15 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Butler responded with 17 unanswered points, taking its first lead of the night on a 44-yard field goal. Nicholas then found Cam Hunter for a 37-yard touchdown pass to put Coffeyville back in front 28-23 with a little over five minutes remaining.

The Grizzlies found the end zone again with 1:52 left in the fourth quarter, and Coffeyville stopped the two-point conversion attempt. However, the Red Ravens were unable to put together a game-winning drive, as Malachi Berg was sacked on the final play after coming in for an injured Nicholas.

Coffeyville drops to 1-2 in conference play and will face No. 1 Hutchinson next week in another KJCCC matchup. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

Bullpups Earn Fourth Shutout in 46-0 Win Over Chargers

Head coach Criss Davis and his Bullpups shut out an opponent for the fourth time this season as Caney Valley took down rival Cherryvale 46-0 on Homecoming night in Week 6.

Jace Buckley got the scoring started on the Bullpups’ third play from scrimmage, finding a seam on the left side of the offensive line and bursting into the end zone for a 68-yard rushing touchdown.

Layne Denny then found a streaking Traxcyn Garton down the right sideline for a 58-yard touchdown pass, putting Caney Valley in the driver’s seat with a 16-0 lead after the first quarter.

Buckley added two more rushing touchdowns to finish with three on the night in another dominant performance on the ground, as Caney Valley entered halftime ahead 32-0.

The Bullpups’ defense once again made life difficult for the opposing offense, recording an interception and stopping the Chargers on fourth down twice to preserve the shutout. Garton and Boone White added two more rushing scores in the third quarter.

With a running clock for the final 20 minutes, Davis put in a slew of underclassmen, who all gained valuable playing time. Caney Valley came away with another 40-plus-point win before the players celebrated Homecoming night.

The Bullpups will move on to face Riverton on the road next week, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

Nado Fall to Labette on Homecoming Night

Field Kindley High School football falls on Homecoming Night to Labette County 41-6.

Labette County jumped out early to a 21-0 lead at the half.  They would extend their lead to 28-0 before Coffeyville would get on the board 28-6 with a 43 yard touchdown catch by Carsten Voss.  The Grizzlies would seal the win with two more touchdowns.

Coffeyville is back on the road next week traveling to Emporia.

Nado Host Labette County On Homecoming Night

The Field Kindley High School football team returns home tonight for their homecoming matchup against Labette County, looking to bounce back from last week's loss to Winfield.

The Nado have struggled with consistency through the first five games of the season. Head Coach Mike O'Connor says last week's performance showed several areas where the team needs to improve. With injuries impacting the Nado roster, the team has made several position changes ahead of tonight's game. O'Connor says the adjustments are intended to help the team both this season and moving forward.

Labette County enters the matchup following a loss to Fort Scott in its league opener. O'Connor says the Grizzlies have shown an ability to stay competitive even when trailing. The Nado and Grizzlies meet tonight at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Coffeyville. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30pm with kickoff at 7:00pm on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

Red Ravens Ride Defensive Takeaways Into Butler Showdown

The Coffeyville Red Ravens and head coach Nick Dobler are coming off a 31-19 victory over Ellsworth in a non-conference battle last Saturday.

The Red Ravens traveled seven hours to Iowa Falls, Iowa, to take on the Panthers and jumped out to an early 14-0 lead they would never relinquish on their way to a 12-point win, moving to 2-4 on the year.

The defense forced five total takeaways, including three interceptions and two fumbles, while not allowing an offensive touchdown in the final 30 minutes of the matchup. Dobler says his team stuck to the game plan, as the defensive line capitalized on sacks while Ellsworth was forced to go to the air while trailing late in the fourth quarter.

Dobler says his offense did a good job of finding a rhythm and responding in the third quarter with 10 straight points to build momentum, but penalties and turnovers derailed some of that steam, something the Red Ravens will continue to work on heading into Week 7.

Coffeyville will take on Butler tomorrow night in a Kansas Jayhawk Conference battle, as the Red Ravens look to move to 2-1 in conference play on the 25th anniversary of Veterans Memorial Stadium. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

Bullpups Aim to Stay Perfect Against Chargers

The Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis are coming off a 38-14 statement win over Neodesha last Friday, improving to 5-0 on the season.

The Bullpups have never trailed this season and have taken double-digit leads into halftime in all five contests.

Davis says the aspect that stood out to him most after the clash against the Bluestreaks was his offensive line, which gave his running backs great lanes to run through while also showing improvement in the footwork of his blockers.

Caney Valley will face Cherryvale as the Bullpups return home for Homecoming tonight, and Davis says the Chargers are a team that can put points on the board. With a week full of festivities and distractions, he also says staying focused will be important for the Bullpups.

Caney Valley has won eight straight games against Cherryvale, including 13 of the past 15, and will look to make it nine straight this evening. Pregame coverage for the game begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

West Elk Underclassmen Making Impact Through Injury-Plagued Stretch

The West Elk Patriots and head coach Ian Denton fell to the unbeaten Oswego Indians, 54-8, last Friday, dropping to 1-4 on the year.

The Patriots have faced a tough stretch of opponents and have been without several key starters over the past few weeks, creating opportunities for younger players to step into bigger roles.

Denton praised freshman Michael Best, who hauled in his first touchdown catch for 44 yards, along with running back Carson Tindle for stepping into larger designations as the Patriots deal with injuries.

The Patriots will begin a two-game road trip in Week 6 with a visit to Yates Center, a team West Elk hasn’t faced in a few years. Denton says the Patriots will face a left-handed quarterback and are preparing for the challenge.

West Elk will look to secure its second win of the season while keeping the Wildcats at two wins when the Patriots hit the road this Friday.

Bluestreaks, Cubs Meet in Key 4-1 District Showdown

The Neodesha Bluestreaks and head coach Nathan West dropped a 38-14 decision to Caney Valley in Week 5, suffering their first loss of the season.

The Bluestreaks entered the matchup at 4-0, looking to begin the second half of their regular season with a statement, but couldn’t mount a second-half comeback after going into halftime down 14-0.

West says his team didn’t match the physicality of the Bullpups, and that will be something the Bluestreaks will have to work on as the season progresses.

With an important game against Humboldt coming up in Week 6, West says the Bluestreaks will have to prepare for the Cubs’ dual-threat quarterback and be ready to play from kickoff.

Both Neodesha and Humboldt enter the district clash at 4-1, as the Bluestreaks will look to rebound at home against another tough opponent.

Fredonia Defense Continues Strong Play in Loss to Jayhawk-Linn

The Fredonia Yellowjackets and head coach Lucus Lanning fell in a stout defensive battle to Jayhawk-Linn, 14-6, last Friday.

Fredonia was coming off a 30-8 defeat to Humboldt, but the Yellowjackets’ defense continues to play well, holding the Cubs to a single touchdown in the first half in Week 4 and the Jayhawks scoreless in the second half last week.

Lanning says his team moved the ball well, but penalties and ball security stalled some drives as the Yellowjackets will look to clean up those areas while continuing to build on their strong defensive performances.

Lanning also says his offense is beginning to flow as his players continue to adapt to a new playbook and build better communication.

Fredonia will take on Prairie-View on the road this week, looking for its second win of the year while trying to put a stop to the Buffaloes’ two-game winning streak.

Labette Prepares for Third Straight Road Game

Labette County High School football is back on the road for the third straight week as they travel to Coffeyville.

The Grizzlies are coming off a 38-35 loss to Fort Scott. Head Coach Bradley Argabright says he was impressed with how the team fought to get back into the game. It is homecoming week for Coffeyville and Argabright says they know the will get the Nado's best shot.

The loss to Fort Scott drops the Grizzlies to 3-2 on the season and 0-1 in League Play. They finish with three straight League game with Coffeyville, Independence and Chanute.

Red Devils Shut Out Southeast, Set Sights on Unbeaten Oswego

The Erie Red Devils and head coach David Pitts shut out Southeast for a 24-0 win last Friday, moving to 3-2 on the year after another stellar defensive performance.

Over their past two games, the Red Devils have outscored their opponents 74-0 while continuing to make life tough for opposing offenses, as Erie’s offense has also put together strong, consistent series.

Pitts says he hammers home the importance of physicality in practice, and his players are thriving when they take that message onto the field and put it into execution.

The Red Devils will face undefeated Oswego this week, giving Pitts a chance to go up against former student and current Indians head coach Matt Fowler. Pitts says one of Oswego’s biggest strengths is its unison and discipline before and after the snap.

Erie will look for its fourth win of the year and try to hand Oswego its first defeat when the Red Devils travel to face the Indians in Week 6.

Cherryvale Looks to Hand Caney Valley First Loss of Season

The Cherryvale Chargers and head coach Harry Hester dropped a 35-6 decision to Baxter Springs last Friday night.

Cherryvale was coming off a comeback win against Galena thanks to a big second half, but the Chargers were shut out over the final 24 minutes against the Lions in Week 5.

Hester says he liked his team’s resiliency in the first two quarters, as the defense created multiple turnovers, but the offense was unable to capitalize on drives that reached Baxter Springs territory.

The Chargers will face undefeated Caney Valley this week, and Hester says the physicality and ground attack of the Bullpups will be two things Cherryvale will have to look out for.

Cherryvale sits at 3-2 and will look to spoil the Bullpups’ Homecoming when the Chargers travel to Caney Valley this Friday.

K-State Returns to Action With Top-25 Showdown

The K-State Wildcats and head coach Collin Klein are coming off a bye week as they prepare to host the 22nd-ranked Houston Cougars.

The Wildcats will face their first ranked opponent of the year in an important matchup as K-State looks to bounce back from its loss to Cincinnati and avoid a second defeat, which would put a dent in the Wildcats’ College Football Playoff hopes.

Klein says the bye week has its advantages and disadvantages, especially coming off a defeat, but it gave his team time to recover from injuries, as the Wildcats will be hungry to get back on the field and put another win in the record column.

The Cougars are coming off a 10-point win over UCF, with their lone loss coming by two points to No. 11 Texas Tech. Klein says Houston is a great situational football team with a strong run defense and a high third-down conversion rate, all things the Wildcats will have to prepare for.

The Wildcats will look to move to 1-1 in conference play and put themselves back in position to compete for a Big 12 title as the midway point of the season approaches.

Field Kindley Girls Golf Claims SEK Title With Podium Sweep

The Field Kindley girls golf team captured the SEK Tournament championship in Pittsburg yesterday, winning the event for the second straight year.

Three Nado golfers took to the podium, with Jessica Zimmerman taking first, Avery Sells finishing second, and Addison Watts placing third after a playoff to sweep the top three spots.

Josie Murdock, Kennadi Freedle and Halle Tatman also finished fifth, seventh and 13th, respectively, for a strong all-around team performance.

Field Kindley outshot its next closest opponent by 66 strokes and will head to Osawatomie Thursday before hosting Sub-State at Coffeyville Country Club on October 12.

Oswego Follows Shootout With Dominant Victory Over West Elk

The Oswego Indians and head coach Matt Fowler remain unbeaten after a 54-8 win on the road against the West Elk Patriots last Friday.

Oswego was coming off a 66-56 barnburner victory against Yates Center in Week 4, a game where the Indians ran 47 fewer plays than the Wildcats, stringing together an extremely efficient night on offense.

Down 34-20 at halftime, Fowler says his team didn’t panic and did a great job weathering the storm, as their physical style of play helped the offense erupt over the final 24 minutes.

In their latest game against the Patriots, Oswego scored 48 points in the first two quarters while limiting West Elk to a single score. Fowler says the Patriots do a great job with play action and play fakes, which was an emphasis for his defense entering Week 5.

The Indians will return home this Friday to take on Erie with a chance to improve to 6-0 and continue their offensive supremacy, as they’ve scored 54 or more points in four of their five games.

St. Paul Continues to Fight Despite Depleted Roster

The St. Paul Indians and head coach Keith Wiatrak are coming off a frenetic 56-48 loss to Crest in Week 5.

St. Paul was looking for its first win of the year against another winless team in the Lancers, and its comeback bid late in the fourth quarter fell just short after Crest returned a kickoff for a touchdown to extend the lead with seven minutes to go.

Even with the injury bug heavily impacting his squad, with four starters out on both sides of the ball and all three quarterbacks sidelined with either a separated shoulder or broken collarbone, Wiatrak says he was proud of how his team performed and never gave up.

With a big chunk of underclassmen now getting varsity experience, Wiatrak says his team is improving every week and moving in a positive direction, with their competitive spirit never waning.

The Indians will face Flinthills this week in Week 6 at home after three consecutive road games, looking to secure their first victory of the season.

Jayhawks' Volleyball Nine-Match Win Streak Ends Against BYU

The Kansas Jayhawks and head coach Matt Ulmer saw their nine-match winning streak end Friday after a top-20 matchup against BYU ended in a 3-0 sweep for the Cougars.

The Jayhawks were coming off a ranked win against Utah in straight sets to move to 10-3 on the year, taking down the Utes 32-30, 25-20 and 26-24.

Ulmer says he thought his defense, especially the team’s blocking, made some big plays, while several players stepped up to help Kansas come away with close-set victories.

Heading into the matchup with BYU, Ulmer says he likes his team’s ability to win close sets under stress and pressure and is enjoying seeing the Jayhawks continue to improve as Big 12 play progresses.

Kansas will look to bounce back Sunday on the road against UCF, with first serve set for noon.

Bulldogs Shut Out Chanute in Regulation, Win in Overtime

The Independence Bulldogs and head coach Kendall Fiscus improved to 3-2 after a 16-8 overtime win over Chanute, moving back above .500 with 3 games remaining in the regular season.

The Bulldogs and Comets battled throughout the night, going scoreless through the first four quarters, as Independence’s defense stepped up in overtime to help secure the victory, giving Fiscus and his team an important win as they head into the heart of league play.

Before the matchup, Fiscus says Chanute had played several quality football teams and that his Bulldogs couldn’t solely focus on the Comets’ record.

Independence will move on to face Ottawa next week in its fourth straight home game, looking to build on the momentum from the overtime victory and push its win total to 4.

Chiefs Take Over in the Fourth Against Raiders to Remain Undefeated

The Kansas City Chiefs used a furious offensive burst in the fourth quarter to take down the Las Vegas Raiders, 30-27, in a clash that came down to the wire, keeping Kansas City as one of three undefeated teams in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes threw for two touchdowns, while Kenneth Walker added two rushing scores on his way to a 177-yard day. The Chiefs’ defense also came up with crucial turnovers in the final frame, including a recovered fumble on a kick return and an interception on the Raiders’ final offensive snap.

Head coach Andy Reid says he liked the performance he got from his offense, especially in the ground game.

While Kansas City improved to 4-0, receivers Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton both suffered injuries in the victory, potentially leaving the Chiefs without a significant portion of their most productive pass catchers moving forward.

The Chiefs will enter Week 5 with a bye before returning to action Sunday, October 18, against the Chargers at Kauffman Stadium, with pregame coverage beginning at 2 p.m. and kickoff set for 3:25 on the Mighty 690.

Jayhawks and Wildcats Set for Ranked Matchups in Week 6

The Kansas Jayhawks and head coach Lance Leipold cruised past the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, 55-0, Saturday in Lawrence to get back to .500 on the season.

Three Jayhawk rushers carried the ball more than 12 times, with Dylan Edwards and Isaiah Marshall surpassing the 100-yard mark as Kansas set a single-game school record with 706 yards of total offense.

Leipold says he was proud of his team’s all-around performance and how the Jayhawks handled the Blue Raiders, especially the defense, which allowed the fewest yards in Leipold's 6-year stint with the Jayhawks.

The Jayhawks will move on to Week 6 looking for a Big 12 road upset against No. 12 Utah, with pregame coverage beginning at 8:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 9:15 on Classic Hits 104.1.

K-State football had a bye this week but will return to its home field for a top-25 matchup with Houston, with pregame coverage beginning at 12:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 2:30 on the Mighty 690.

Ward, Red Ravens Defense Finish Strong in Win Over Ellsworth

The Coffeyville Red Ravens and head coach Nick Dobler came away with a 31-19 win over the Ellsworth Panthers in Iowa Falls, Iowa, Saturday, delivering the team its second win of the season.

The Red Ravens snagged an interception on the second play from scrimmage to set up their offense with a first-and-goal, but a fumble two plays later gave the ball right back to Ellsworth. Coffeyville would score on its ensuing offensive series after the Panthers punted, with Jahmir Joseph finding the end zone on a two-yard touchdown run for his first rushing score of the year.

The early 7-0 lead would be doubled when Coffeyville gave a Wildcat snap to TJ Ward, who powered his way into the end zone to make it 14-0 with 3:43 left in the first quarter. Ellsworth responded with two scores of its own in the second, including one after a Red Raven interception, but Conner Pierce blocked the Panthers’ extra-point attempt to keep Coffeyville’s advantage at one going into halftime.

The Red Ravens added a field goal on their first drive out of halftime to extend the lead, and Ward added another rushing score after Pierce picked off the Panthers for Coffeyville’s second interception of the game. With a 24-13 lead, the Red Ravens defense continued to make life difficult for Ellsworth, picking off the Panthers for a third time and forcing another fumble to give Coffeyville five total turnovers.

But Ellsworth wouldn’t go away, and with 4:50 left in the fourth quarter, the Panthers recovered a sack fumble and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown to make it a five-point game after a failed two-point conversion. With the ball back in the hands of the offense, Dobler called a Wildcat formation for all eight plays of the next possession, with the majority of them going to Ward, who finished the drive with a 20-yard rushing touchdown that took nearly four minutes off the clock.

The Panthers couldn’t race down the field to cut into the lead, and Coffeyville exited Cadet Field with a 12-point win to move to 2-4 on the year.

The Red Ravens will be back in action next Saturday when they host Butler, with pregame coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

Caney Valley Defense, Big Plays Power Win Over Neodesha

For the second straight week, the Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis played spoiler in another Homecoming matchup, running away with a 38-14 victory over the Neodesha Bluestreaks on Friday night.

Both teams traded empty possessions to begin the game, but on the first play of the Bullpups’ second offensive series, Traxcyn Garton sped for a 55-yard gain to set up Caney Valley inside the Neodesha red zone. The senior running back punched it in from two yards out a few plays later to give Caney a 6-0 lead.

The score remained the same heading into the second frame until the Bullpups went to the air in Neodesha territory, with Layne Denny finding Boone White streaking down the middle of the field for a 44-yard touchdown pass to put Caney Valley up 14-0.

Senior defensive lineman Jace Wren forced a fumble on Neodesha’s next possession, with Angel Martinez recovering to give Caney Valley a short field. The Bluestreaks held firm, however, stopping the Bullpups on fourth down to keep it a two-score game heading into halftime.

Caney Valley extended its lead to 22-0 early in the third quarter after Davis went deep into his playbook for a flea flicker, with Garton finding Drake Roberds for a 28-yard touchdown pass, Roberds’ fourth touchdown catch over the past two games.

Neodesha answered with a scoring drive on its next series, using a heavy air attack to find the end zone and cut the deficit to 16 after a failed two-point try.

Jace Buckley and Garton would both find the end zone on methodical, bruising scoring drives from 17 and six yards out, respectively, while the defense continued its onslaught with a blocked punt from Buckley and an interception from Huck Seger to deflate any hopes of a Bluestreaks comeback.

Neodesha would tack on a late score with under a minute left, but the Bullpups took to victory formation to kneel out the game and move to 5-0 with a vintage performance.

Caney Valley will be back in action next week during its Homecoming week when the Bullpups host the Cherryvale Chargers in Week 6. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

Bullpups Prepare for Undefeated Battle with Bluestreaks

The Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis are coming off a 64-26 victory over the Baxter Springs Lions last Friday.

Caney continues to use a strong ground game paired with a timely, lethal passing attack to topple opponents, while the defense has allowed just four touchdowns over the past four games.

Davis says the most impressive thing about last week’s game was his team’s ability to answer whenever the Lions gained momentum. What was a seesaw contest in the first half turned into a rout over the final 24 minutes.

The Bullpups will face undefeated Neodesha in the Bluestreaks’ Homecoming game tonight, looking to make it 11 straight victories over the Tri-Valley League opponent. Davis says the two teams know each other well, and he’s expecting another good game against a fundamentally sound squad.

Caney Valley took last year’s matchup in a defensive slugfest, with Neodesha clinging to a 6-0 lead entering the fourth quarter before the Bullpups rattled off 22 unanswered points to take the win. Pregame coverage for tonight’s marquee matchup begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.

Red Ravens Look to Turn Season Around at Ellsworth

The Coffeyville Red Ravens and head coach Nick Dobler depart for Ellsworth, Iowa, today for a seven-hour bus ride in preparation for tomorrow’s Week 7 matchup with the Ellsworth Panthers.

The Red Ravens are coming off a 19-14 defeat to Garden City during Homecoming weekend and are looking to turn their season around, sitting at 1-4. Ellsworth also enters the matchup at 1-4 after dropping four straight games.

Head coach Nick Dobler says he sees the desire in his players to come away with a win after a tough start to the season. The Red Ravens are also looking for consistency at quarterback after using two different signal-callers over the past two contests.

Dobler says the Panthers are also searching for an identity, as both teams continue to make adjustments and figure things out halfway through the KJCAA campaign.

The Red Ravens have won the past five matchups with the Panthers and will look to extend that streak tomorrow, with pregame coverage beginning at 10:30 a.m. and kickoff set for 11 on the Mighty 690 and US 98.

Nado @ Winfield Kickoff Moved up to 2:00pm

Field Kindley High School football travels to Winfield for their week 5 matchup with the Vikings.

The Nado are coming off a week 4 loss to rival Independence 56-16, a game they saw themselves take a 8-0 in before the Bulldogs scored 56 unanswered points. Head Coach Mike O'Connor says he was proud with how the team started the game but they have to put together four complete quarters.

The Nado take on the 2-2 Vikings who are coming off an overtime win against Augusta. Coffeyville has won the last two matchups with Winfield in 2022 and 2023. O'Connor says it isn't a team the Nado are super familiar with.

Kick off for tomorrow's game has been moved up to 2:00pm due to an official shortage. Pregame will start at 1:30pm on Sonshine 98.9 KQQF.

Neodesha Takes Perfect Record Into Homecoming Clash With Caney Valley

The Neodesha Bluestreaks and head coach Nathan West are coming off a 47-6 win over the Central Heights Vikings last Friday.

The win moves Neodesha to 4-0, with an average margin of victory of 41 points per game, as the Bluestreaks have cruised through most of their competition heading into the second half of the season.

West points to the collectiveness of his offense, along with assistant coaches Chris Hinshaw and Jake Carpenter, as reasons for the unit’s success and its ability to harness the potential of both the run and pass game.

Neodesha will enter the next stretch of its season with a big matchup against undefeated Caney Valley, and West says he expects it to be a four-quarter football game on the Bluestreaks’ Homecoming night.

The Bullpups won last year’s matchup 22-6 on their home field, and Neodesha will look to return the favor on a festivity-filled Friday evening.

Red Ravens Soccer Teams Set for Saturday Action, Volleyball Eyes 10th Win

The Coffeyville Red Ravens are entering the final stretch of their fall sports seasons, with several teams continuing to battle for wins as conference play winds down. The men’s and women’s soccer teams will both be back in action Saturday, while the volleyball team prepares for its next match next week.

The Red Ravens men’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against second-ranked Cowley Saturday before following up with a 5-1 win over Metropolitan. The men move to 4-2-4 on the year and will face Garden City this Saturday, with kickoff set for 2 p.m.

The Red Ravens women’s soccer team fell to Hutchinson last night, 5-0, dropping their third straight match after an impressive start to the season. The women move to 6-4-1 and will take on the Broncbusters this Saturday, with kickoff set for noon.

Lastly, the Red Ravens volleyball team took down NEO in four sets Saturday before falling to top-ranked Johnson County, 3-0, yesterday. Coffeyville moves to 9-15 on the year and will take on Seminole State next Monday at 5:30 p.m., looking for its 10th win of the season.
