For the second straight week, the Caney Valley Bullpups and head coach Criss Davis played spoiler in another Homecoming matchup, running away with a 38-14 victory over the Neodesha Bluestreaks on Friday night.
Both teams traded empty possessions to begin the game, but on the first play of the Bullpups’ second offensive series, Traxcyn Garton sped for a 55-yard gain to set up Caney Valley inside the Neodesha red zone. The senior running back punched it in from two yards out a few plays later to give Caney a 6-0 lead.
The score remained the same heading into the second frame until the Bullpups went to the air in Neodesha territory, with Layne Denny finding Boone White streaking down the middle of the field for a 44-yard touchdown pass to put Caney Valley up 14-0.
Senior defensive lineman Jace Wren forced a fumble on Neodesha’s next possession, with Angel Martinez recovering to give Caney Valley a short field. The Bluestreaks held firm, however, stopping the Bullpups on fourth down to keep it a two-score game heading into halftime.
Caney Valley extended its lead to 22-0 early in the third quarter after Davis went deep into his playbook for a flea flicker, with Garton finding Drake Roberds for a 28-yard touchdown pass, Roberds’ fourth touchdown catch over the past two games.
Neodesha answered with a scoring drive on its next series, using a heavy air attack to find the end zone and cut the deficit to 16 after a failed two-point try.
Jace Buckley and Garton would both find the end zone on methodical, bruising scoring drives from 17 and six yards out, respectively, while the defense continued its onslaught with a blocked punt from Buckley and an interception from Huck Seger to deflate any hopes of a Bluestreaks comeback.
Neodesha would tack on a late score with under a minute left, but the Bullpups took to victory formation to kneel out the game and move to 5-0 with a vintage performance.
Caney Valley will be back in action next week during its Homecoming week when the Bullpups host the Cherryvale Chargers in Week 6. Pregame coverage begins at 6:30 p.m., with kickoff set for 7 on US 98.
