As part of the Army of Occupation, he was there to encourage people to work at factories in Regensburg building civilian boats.

David G. Sandon

David G. Sandon of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away at the age of 67 on July 23, 2021, at CRMC after several years of failing health.

David was born on July 7, 1954, to Herbert “Bud” and Betty Jo (Neese) Sandon in Coffeyville, Kansas.  David attended grade school at Garfield and graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High in 1972.  He attended Coffeyville Community Junior College prior to his employment with Roadway where he retired  after 25 years of services. He was a proud and active member of the Teamsters Union.

David married the love of his life Peggy Cooke on November 2, 1979, in Coffeyville in their home, of that union two children were born, Jennifer and Kyle.  After his retirement Peggy and David traveled to several places of interest taking full opportunity of enjoying retirement. In November of 1998 they moved to rural Labette County to fulfill their dreams of life back on the farm where they could be found working side by side with each other.  David thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors if he wasn’t working in the hay field, feeding cattle, or mending fence he was out hunting or fishing.

David was one in a million, he was tougher than a leather boot and the nails that holds the soles together.  David was first dedicated to his wife and family, he would have given the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it, and often helped people when they least expected it.  He has spent a lifetime of dedication to the Coffeyville Fair and Rodeo Association.  He was that no filter kind of guy that worked hard his entire life right up until his death.   David wouldn’t have called himself a teacher, but he was just that!  He enjoyed teaching the younger generation about the outdoors; teaching anyone who wanted to learn about hunting, fishing, raising cattle, farming, haying, working on farm equipment, anything they wanted to learn.

Family and friends often gather at David and Peggy’s house to share in a holiday, game night or just for conversation.  David was quite onery and you knew he liked you if he gave you a hard time.  A perfect example is he always wanted to make sure that no one left hungry from their home but would then razz you about eating all his food.

Family gatherings, a time to celebrate holidays, birthdays,  and anniversaries will never be quite the same for his wife, Peggy of the home; daughter, Jennifer Troutman and her husband Rick, son, Kyle Sandon and his wife, Tyler; grandchildren, Ashlie French and her husband Zach, Nick Nolen, Michaela Nolen and boyfriend, Gilbert Brignoni, Cooper Sandon, Claire Sandon, Corbin Sandon, Gunner Troutman and fiancé Ashleigh Dangerfield, Johnathan Troutman; great-grandchildren, Michael French, Benny Troutman; brother, Mark Sandon and his wife Tracy; sisters, Janet Wall; brother-in-law, Joel Leedy; mother-in-law, Lee Wanda Cooke, brother-in-law Tim Cooke and his wife Janet; sisters-in-law, Janet Groves and her husband Danny, Pam Payne; numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.   David was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Jean Leedy, his father-in-law, Gene Cooke and brother-in-law, Tim Payne.

Lee Edwin Harris

Lee Edwin Harris passed to his eternal home on July 14, 2021, at his home in Independence, Kansas, surrounded by his loved ones. He lived with a brain tumor, glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), from January 2019, until the Lord called him home. He leaves behind his wife, Stephanie (Plute) Harris; two sons and their families, Adam and Chelsea Harris and grandsons Ethan, Nolan and Jordan of Broomfield, Colorado; Austin Harris and granddaughter Teagan of Independence, Kansas; brother Gary and wife Debbie Harris of Lansdale, Pennsylvania; sister Donna (Don) Delp of York, Pennsylvania, and one sister-in-law, Stacy (Rob) Works. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews, cousins, and uncles. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Ruth Elaine (Overholt) Harris; grandparents Olin and Flora (Layman) Harris; Horace and Margaret (Schmell) Overholt; father-in-law Doyal R. Plute, and brother-in-law Stephen R. Plute.

Lee was born on May 14, 1954, in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, where he grew up. He graduated from Central Bucks East High School in Pennsylvania in 1972, and then attended John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Arkansas where he graduated with a degree in Construction Management in 1976. He met his wife Stephanie at JBU, and they were married on February 11, 1978. They made their home in Chanute, Kansas, before moving to Independence and began raising a family.

Lee worked in construction his entire life, and loved working with his hands, building and renovating structures. His first job after graduation from JBU was for DeMerritt Construction in Chanute, then worked for Guaranty Performance and Midland Construction of Independence. He took a position at Decker Construction, Inc. of Coffeyville, Kansas as VP and Project Manager where he worked from 1983 until his retirement in 2019. In the Southeast Kansas area, a few of the projects he managed were the construction of the two Appletree Inns, Sleep Inn, and Best Western; Veterans Memorial Stadium, CRMC, and Memorial Hall in Independence, other projects included Oklahoma Union, AmericInn of Hesston, doctor’s offices, school buildings, and hotels throughout Kansas and Oklahoma.

Lee enjoyed raising his family, and helped his boys participate in playing sports, and being involved in school and church programs as well as 4H. He set an example by his actions more than his words. He was a perfectionist in the craft of building, and had little tolerance for a job not well done. He took great satisfaction in each project he did, and especially his own. He preferred to renovate than remodel, and everything had to be done “right”.

When he wasn’t involved in construction, he and his wife enjoyed playing cards in weekly games with friends; and traveling.

Lee grew up attending First Baptist Church of Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and later was a member of the First Southern Baptist and First Baptist Churches of Independence, and Bolton Friends Church of Bolton, Kansas. Although Lee was not ready to leave his family, and his wishes were to have lived awhile longer to see his grandchildren grow up and enjoy his retirement years, he was a Christian, and ready to meet his Maker. It is with both sadness and assurance that we let him go.

Ethan Michael Smith

On April fools of 1991 Ethan Michael Smith's parents found out that he would be making his arrival into this world as their second born child. Grady A. Smith and Donna (Littlejohn) Smith welcomed Ethan into this world on Tuesday, November 19, 1991, in Coffeyville, Kansas.

On July 4, 2021, at the age of 29 Ethan's journey on earth ended unexpectedly in an auto accident near Tyro.

Everyone has a God given talent and Ethan's was the gift of compassion for people.  Upon his arrival he brought such joy to his family as he grew, he shared an infectious smile and such a big heart.  As a first grader he started playing organized sports and he developed into a tremendous athlete, excelling in football but was also very valuable as a teammate in basketball and baseball. After graduating from Caney Valley High School, he went on to play football for Coffeyville Community College as a guard then transferred to the University of Sioux Falls as an offensive lineman. Transferred to Pittsburg State University, to play football but the Rugby team saw him and recruited him to play Rugby.  Ethan fell in love with Rugby and continued to play until graduation.  After completing his bachelor's degree in Physical Education, head coach Trenton Kallenbeger chose him in the draft pick for the Green Country Phoenix Football Team a Semi-Pro Football team as a full back and middle linebacker; he helped the team win the championship game that year.  The team moved to Tulsa as the Tulsa Gators, and he continued as a full back and added position of defensive end.   If Ethan was not on the field, he was in the gym developing strength and endurance.

Ethan and his brothers could have WWE front room battles, arguments, knock down drag outs but the loved they shared was deep and they were always there for each other no matter what.  Blood is so much thicker than water.

Not often in life are you fortunate to have a good friend but to have a whole group of friends that stick together through life is often not heard of but, Ethan had just that.  In the middle of small-town Caney, Kansas USA a young group of teen boys developed a tight knit bound, those guys could still be found hanging out sharing stories and life together and Ethan valued each of their friendships.

On November 26, 2016, Ethan married his best friend, Jena Standlee and in addition to her becoming his wife, he gained Rhett Baker a child he has loved as his own.  Ethan has been active in coaching Rhett's little league soccer, baseball, and football teams.  A very important game will be played on Wednesday July 7, where Rhett and his teammates will play in a play-off game in position to advance to the championship game. Hot off the press is the news that Rhett Baker first at bat and he hits a HOME RUN! In addition to a season of great teamwork that has advanced them to this position they will dedicate the game to Coach Ethan.   Ethan and Jena's little girl Kamdyn arrived five years ago introducing Ethan to the world of little girls.  This was something he was totally unfamiliar with coming from a household of all brothers and sharing life with Rhett.   Ethan took the title of "Dance Dad" with pride, he could be found playing dress up and having tea parties but he was Kamdyn's #1 fan on the T-Ball Field too.

After Semi Pro Football Ethan started working for CVR Nitrogen in Coffeyville in the Maintenance Department, where he was currently employed until his death.  He was also a part of the Emergency Response Team at CVR and the Volunteer Fire Department in Caney.  Ethan and Jena are the owners and operators of Raising the Bar Fitness in Caney where they shared the love of physical fitness, not only for themselves but with the community.

Beloved son, husband, father, friend is how most will remember Ethan. His first love was for his family, his friends, football and working out.  He loved family game nights, hanging out with friends, and cooking on the grill to share a meal with them.  His family and friends lovingly referred to him as "Big E" and his infectious smile and big heart just drew people to him; the kind of man anyone would be proud to call "friend."

The family that will forever cherish the time they had with Ethan is his wife, Jena of the home; children, Rhett Baker, Kamdyn Smith; father, Grady A. Smith and step-mom, Debbie; mother Donna Hawthorne and a man that has accepted him as his own, David Phillips; step-dad, Gary Hawthorne; brothers, Grady L. Smith, Brycen Hawthorne and Brandon Hawthorne and his wife Wendi; extended family and a host of friends.  He is now at rest with his maternal and paternal grandparents and he and Jena's baby that they loved.

Funeral services Ethan's life will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at 2:00 pm at Tyro Christian Church with friend, mentor, pastor and coach, Jeff Wyrick officiating, burial will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Coffeyville.  The family will receive friends on Friday, July 9, 2021, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave., in Coffeyville.  The family has requested memorial contributions be made payable to the Ethan Smith Children's Education Fund and those contributions may be left in care of the chapel or taken to Community National Bank in Caney or Coffeyville.  To share a memory or to leave the family a message of condolence, please visit www.fordwulfbrunschapel.com

Dennis Wayne Garr

Dennis Wayne Garr age 63 of Springdale, AR passed away July 1, 2021 at Washington Regional Medical Center in Fayetteville, AR.

Dennis was born on September 4, 1957 in Coffeyville, KS to Steve and Betty (Pittman) Garr. He was raised in Coffeyville and attended local schools graduating from Field Kindley High School with the class of ‘75. He then attended Coffeyville Junior College where he met the love of his life: Sheryl Manley. The couple was united in marriage on August 8, 1976 and would enjoy the next 44 years together. Dennis continued his education at Kansas State University where he earned his bachelor’s degree. They made Dewey, OK their home where Dennis began working as an agent with the 4-H Extension then transferring to Great Falls, MT, then North Carolina where they were blessed with the birth of their son Andy. The three then moved to Stillwater, OK where Dennis earned his master’s degree from Oklahoma State University, and they were blessed with the birth of their second son, Dillon. The family would then move to Nevada, MO before calling Springdale, AR home, where Dennis was currently managing the Orscheln’s Farm and Home.

Dennis loved being a dad and keeping up with his boys made him complete. Even though Dennis lived in many places, he always found his family to be his home. Having spent much of his life working in western stores, building custom cowboy hats, and team roping in his youth, his wardrobe was consistent: he wore jeans and boots no matter the occasion, even on the beach or at the lake. He was quick with a joke and anyone who had the pleasure of meeting him would agree he was a good, kind-hearted man. His life was a living example of Ephesians 4:32 - “And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.” Dennis’ smile, laugh, and pleasant disposition were infectious and will be greatly missed by those blessed enough to have experienced them during his life.
