A Hutchinson Correctional Facility dies while in custody.
49-year old Scott Edward Wood was found unresponsive in his cell this afternoon. Life-saving measures were performed by staff members and emergency medical services. Wood was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased by medical staff. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.
Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
Wood was serving a 50-month sentence for convictions of drug possession and aggravated escape committed in Sedgwick County, Kansas.
The Hutchinson Correctional Facility is the state’s third-largest facility, serving only adult males. Its capacity is 1,788 residents.
