Rowena Marlene Thompson, age 83, of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2026, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.  

 

Rowena was born on April 23, 1943, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Marvin and Ruth (Goldsmith) Hine.  She grew up in Edna, Kansas where she attended local schools through 8th grade.  She then attended LCCHS at Altamont, Kansas graduating in 1961.  

 

On November 19, 1961, she married the love of her life, Darrell Thompson in Alluwe, Oklahoma.  The couple made their home in Fort Scott, Kansas where they raised their son, Steven.  After Darrell's retirement, the couple moved to South Coffeyville, Oklahoma.  Darrell preceded her in death on November 7, 2023.  

 

Rowena worked at Edna Cafe, Ben Franklins in Coffeyville, and Western Insurance Company and Whitesides IGA in Fort Scott.   Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, and cross stitching.  She crocheted hundreds of prayer wraps for those in need.  She was a member of the Grace Fellowship Church in Coffeyville.

 

Surviving to cherish her memory is her son, Steve (Cindy) Thompson, several cherished nieces and nephews and cousins.

 

Following Rowena’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.  

 

Graveside Memorial Services will take place on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Lake Creek Cemetery.  Pastor Doug Mund will officiate.  

 

Memorial contributions can be made to Grace Fellowship Church; these may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home 306 N. Cline Rd. Coffeyville, KS 67337.
