E. Harold Schafer

 

E. Harold Schafer, age 90, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Monday, June 22, 2026, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.  

 

Harold was born on June 6, 1936, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Ernest and Eva (Corn) Schafer.  He grew up in Coffeyville where he attended local schools and graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School.  He furthered his education by taking classes at Coffeyville Community College.  

 

On November 17, 1956, he married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Stephens.  Together, the couple raised their three children, Stephen, Robert, and Ginger.  They spent 30 wonderful years living on the Lake of the Ozarks where they enjoyed countless outdoor activities and family gatherings.  After spending 68 wonderful years together, Shirley preceded him in death on December 18, 2024.  

 

Harold spent his career as a pipefitter for Bendrix (now known as Honeywell) in Kansas City, Missouri.  Harold was a member of the Kansas City, Missouri Masonic Lodge, and Ararat Shriners, recently receiving a rarely achieved 50-year pin, and a member of The Jaycee Club in Lee's Summit,, Missouri. Harold also started a little league football organization which he enjoyed for 13 years. He was a St. Louis Cardinals fan that began when he was very young. Harold also enjoyed raising cattle on his ranch after his retirement.  He loved his Welsh Corgi named Bullit that went everywhere with him.  Most of all, he loved the time he spent surrounded by his family and friends.  Harold was a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend.  He was hard-working, dedicated, and admired by those around him.  

 

Surviving to cherish his memory are his son, Stephen Schafer and wife Brenda Schafer, his daughter Ginger Schafer Jones; daughter-in-law, Robin Schafer; grandchildren, Julie Schindler, Sarah Schafer, Shannon Schafer; great grandchildren, Jude Strahm, Nora Schindler and Ava Schindler; sister, Irene Betts along with numerous extended family members and friends.  Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Eva Schafer; loving wife, Shirley Ann Schafer; and son, Robert Schafer.  

 

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  The family will be present to greet friends on Wednesday evening at the funeral home from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  

 

Graveside Services will take place on Thursday, July 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Robbins Cemetery west of Coffeyville.  Evangelist David Bycroft will officiate.  

 

The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to Shriners Hospitals For Children; these may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home 306 N. Cline Rd. Coffeyville, KS 67337.
