Carol Edwana Powell, age 85, of Independence, Kansas passed away on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Medicalodge of Independence Nursing Home.
Carol was born on June 18, 1940, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to James Edward “Ed” and Nellie Emily “Nell” (Hall) Huckaby. She grew up in Stillwater where she graduated high school. Carol furthered her education at Eastern Oklahoma State College where she earned her Associate Degree and became a Licensed Nurse Practitioner.
On August 21, 1955, she married the love of her life, Doyle C. Powell in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The couple had five children, Cynthia, Ed, Doyle, Tami and Toni. In addition to taking care of the house and kids, Carol had a fulfilling career as an LPN where she spent many years taking care of others and helping those in need. She was a member of the Tyro Christian Church, the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary.
In her earlier years she loved traveling, playing slot machines and attending Gene Watson concerts. She even met him several times. She loved her Oklahoma Sooners and Dallas Cowboys. She enjoyed watching sports in general, but football was her favorite. She was an avid rodeo fan who cherished every opportunity to watch the sport, especially when her family was competing.
If you knew Carol, she was a spitfire. She was ornery, and she wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, but she could also be gentle and offer a listening ear to anyone in need. She was lovingly known as “Facebook Grandma” to keep up with all that was going on with her family and friends.
She was proud of her Native American heritage and enjoyed telling stories of times gone by.
Carol loved her dogs. Annie was her most recent companion and they were attached at the hip for many years.
She enjoyed plants, hummingbirds, music and dancing, but most of all she loved her ever-growing family.
