James Michael Hanna

***Update*** Due to the predicted inclement weather, the Hanna family has moved the date of Jim’s Celebration of Life Service up a day, to Friday, January 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Tyro Christian Church.  The family will be present to greet friends at the church prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.

James Michael Hanna, age 73, of Coffeyville, Kansas, was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at his home.

Jim was born on August 20, 1952, in Coffeyville, Kansas to David George (D.G.) and Mary Jo Hanna.  He attended the Coffeyville school system and graduated from Field Kindley High School in 1970.  He went on to attend John Brown University on track and swimming scholarships.

In 1972, Jim married Karen Wallace, and to this union were born two children, Rebecca (Hanna) Brake and Sol Hanna.  Their marriage lasted ten years.  On January 7, 1983, Jim married Ricki Christine Thomas, and together they made their home in Coffeyville.  They later welcomed their son, James David (J.D.) Hanna, as an addition to the family.

Jim dedicated 42 years of service as a machinist at Funks/John Deere.  During his career, he was elected Alternate Union Safety Representative for UAW Local 2366, a role he faithfully served in until his retirement in 2015.  Jim took great pride in his work and treasured the friendships and camaraderie he built over the years.

Jim had a lifelong love of racing and NASCAR, spending decades attending races at the Caney track and others throughout the region.  He often helped his good friends Mike and Andrew Deal and even sponsored Andrew through Racing Rummage.  His passion for racing was evident to all who passed his home, where sprint cars were proudly painted on his garage.

He was an active and devoted member of Tyro Christian Church, where he volunteered with Vacation Bible School, ushered, served communion, and participated in workdays.  After retiring, Jim also gave his time helping at the Presbyterian and Episcopal Church thrift shops in Coffeyville.

Jim enjoyed riding his motorcycles, attending car shows with his father’s 1974 orange Ford F-100 and his own red-and-white 1959 Ford F-100.  He cherished float trips and many memorable family vacations.  His favorite journey was a 28-day cruise with Ricki to Bora Bora, Tahiti, and the Hawaiian Islands.  Jim lived life with a positive spirit and a wonderful sense of humor that will be deeply missed.

Jim is survived by his wife, Ricki Hanna of Coffeyville, Kansas; his brother and sister-in-law, David and Rita Hanna of Coffeyville, Kansas; his daughter, Rebecca (Hanna) Brake and husband Darren of Tyro, Kansas; his son, Sol Hanna and wife Robyn of Coffeyville, Kansas; his son, J.D. Hanna of Coffeyville, Kansas; his daughter, Erin Schonherr and husband Wayne of Nowata, Oklahoma; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of other family members and friends whom he dearly loved.  He was preceded in death by his parents, D.G. and Mary Jo Hanna.

Cremation has taken place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held by the family on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Tyro Christian Church, with Allan Swinson officiating.  Visitation will be held prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made payable to Tyro Christian Church.  Contributions may be left at the funeral home or mailed to David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 N. Cline Rd. Coffeyville, KS 67337.
