Shirley Ann Newton

Shirley Ann Newton, age 86, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at The Journey Home in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

 

Shirley was born on August 29, 1939, in Coffeyville, Kansas to George and Julia (Conners) King.  She grew up in the area, attending local schools and graduated from Wann High School.

 

While working at Armstrong’s Ice Cream she met and fell in love with Melvin “DeWayne” Newton.  The couple were wed on July 6, 1963, in Coffeyville, Kansas.  From this union, three children were born. Mindy, Dub and Melissa.  In addition to raising kids and taking care of the home, Shirley worked as a secretary for Field Kindley High School for many years.  She was a fantastic cook; she hosted many family fish fry and loved making her Christmas candies.  You could often find her tending to her garden or spending time with her family when she wasn’t catching the newest episode of Survivor.  Shirley was a dedicated long-time member of Tyro Christian Church.  She loved to worship and spend time with her church family and friends.

 

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Mindy Browning and husband, Robert, Dub Newton and wife, Nita, Melissa Robertson and fiancé, Wes Wasden; grandchildren, Niki and Josh McClain, Michael Browning, Nick and Meera Brown, Zack and Sara Brown, Keith and Amber Coy, Damon Coy, Jordan and Easton Julian, Grant Newton and fiancé, Marisol; 11 great-grandchildren with another coming in March; 1 great-great grandchild; sisters, Carol Benson, Kathy Siegel and husband, Larry, numerous niece, nephews, extended family and friends.  She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Julia King; husband, DeWayne Newton and her sisters, Alice Wright and Jean Roberts.

 

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.  The family will be present at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.  Following Shirley’s wishes, the casket will be closed.

 

Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Tyro Christian Church in Tyro, Kansas.  Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Coffeyville.

 

The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to The Journey Home; these may be left with the funeral home or mailed in care of David W. Barnes Funeral Home 306 N. Cline Rd. Coffeyville, KS 67337.
