Marvin Ray Newton

 

Marvin Ray Newton of Elk City, Kansas, passed away on January 13, 2025.

 

He was born July 22, 1946 to Ernest O. and Pauline Ruth Newton (Crow), in Miami, Oklahoma, the youngest of four children.

 

Marvin served in the Navy and lived in California while working on a commercial fishing boat. Marvin was an accomplished and respected master welder, millwright and construction supervisor, helping build mills and plants across the United States and Puerto Rico for 51 years. He retired from SCA Construction of Independence, Kansas, as a top supervisor in 2015.

 

Marvin met Velva Bright in 1972 and they spent the next 53 years together, living in Elk City the entire time.

 

Family and friends will remember Marvin with a cup of coffee and handful of playing cards, his favorite games were poker and pinochle.

 

Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, brother Ernest H. Newton of Independence, Kansas, and sister Lavada M. Robinson of Utah. He is survived by his brother Daniel O. Newton of Elk City, wife Velva, sons Dave Rasmussen (Patti) of Wichita, Kansas, Eric Kessler (Jessica) of Moline, Kansas; daughters Jennifer Grupchinski (Bob) of Lake Almanor, California, and Donna Kessler of Elk City; grandchildren Ben Rasmussen and Molly Brown (Todd) of Des Moines, Iowa; Elias Frye and Jeremy Frye of California, Nicole (Richard) Hanks of Coffeyville, Whitney Kessler of Wichita, Jacob Renaud (Samantha) of Elk City, Nicholas O'Daniel (Kiersche) of Independence, Kansas and Robert Kessler of Moline; great grandchildren Kinley Frye of California, Kabe Kessler of Wichita, and Remington, Willow and Sullivan Hanks of Coffeyville, Kansas; as well as many nieces and nephews.

 

Visitation Saturday Jan. 18,  2025 at 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. at Church of the Nazarene, 407 S. Lincoln St. Elk City, Kansas.
