Jo Ann Carney

Jo Ann Carney of Edna, Kansas passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 2, 2023, at her home in rural Edna, Kansas.

 

 

 

Jo Ann was born on July 9, 1929, on the Lowry Ranch east of Lenapah, Oklahoma to James (Tex) and Goldie (Harrison) Cook.  She grew up in the So. Coffeyville area, attended Prairie View Country School through eighth grade, graduated from Lenapah High School in 1947, graduated from Coffeyville Community Jr. College and Pittsburg State University.

 

 

 

Jo Ann was an elementary teacher.  She taught in Chautauqua County one year, Trenton four years and Valeda five years both in Labette County; thirty years at Lowell School in Coffeyville where she retired.

 

On June 30, 1953, Jo Ann married her true love, Marvin Carney in the Trinity Baptist Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.  They left shortly after for Colorado where Marvin was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado.  After he was honorably discharged, they returned to the Edna area making it a permit home.  Marvin passed away on June 7, 2015, they enjoyed almost 62 years together.

 

 

 

Jo Ann enjoyed helping Marvin with the farm work and taking care of the cattle.  She loved all animals, especially horses and enjoyed riding in her younger years.  She enjoyed traveling with Marvin, attending rodeo’s especially the bigger ones, National Finals in Las Vegas, Cheyenne Frontier Days and Calgary Stampede in Alberta Canada.  They enjoyed visiting several of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii.  They also visited France, Italy, Monte Carlo, Switzerland and cruised several of the Islands.

 

 

 

Jo Ann was a member of the Edna United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the Lowell PTA and Pittsburg State Alumni.  She was proud of her Cherokee Heritage.

 

 

 

Jo Ann is survived by her several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; the dearest of friends that checked in on her every day and helped with the chores and everything in between, George Owens, and his wife Janice.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Marvin and one brother, J. R. Cook.

 

 

 

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at 10:30am at Edna First United Methodist. Visitation will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023, also at Edna First United Methodist from 5 to 7 pm.  Jo Ann request memorial contributions be made payable to Coffeyville Salvation Army Community Service Volunteers and those may be left in care of the chapel.  Services will be streamed live under her obituary page www.fordwulfbrunschapel.com  where you may also leave an online condolence or share a memory with the family.
