John H. Saner

John H. Saner age 89 passed away on September 12, 2022, at CRMC in Coffeyville, Kansas.

 

John was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to George H. and Luetta (LeFever) Saner on June 28, 1933, he was the oldest of eight boys and girls and spent nineteen years of his life there.  John married Dawn Showers in 1953, they were later divorced they had four children, Terry, Debbie, Dianne, and Donna.

 

John married Sarah (Cullison) Antle on September 3, 1988; they were married 30 years at the time of her passing on December 7, 2018.  She had three sons, Dennis, Douglas, and Curtis. 

 

John was drafted into the US Army in May of 1953 and served three, three-year tours in Germany and one year in Korea.  Positions held while in the Army were tank crewman, tank commander, tank platoon sergeant, tank battalion operation sergeant.  John is a graduate of The Advanced Armored Non-Commissioned Officer school at Fort Knox, KY.  He returned from a tour in Germany to the Armor School in 1959 and became Senior Weapons Instructor at the school.   He retired from the military at the end of June 1974 after 21 years of service as a First Sergeant E-8.  During his time in the Army, he earned the following awards and decorations, The Meritorious Service Metal, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters which totals four awards, Good Conduct Medal five awards, National Defense Medal.  Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, The Korean Defense Service Medal, Expert M-14 Rifle Badge, and Expert .45 cal Pistol Badge. 

 

After retiring from the military, he started work as an automotive technician for several automobile dealerships in the area.  He worked as Service Manager for Perl Chevrolet for ten years before retiring, then for Auto Zone for five years before retiring for good.  

 

John was a member of Emmanuel Southern Baptist Church of Coffeyville and the VFW Post 1022 and American Legion Post 20 which he was Commander of for one year.  He also served on the funeral detail for many veterans who preceded him in death.  

 

John is survived by daughters, Debbie Rich, Dianne Ringler (Mike) and Donna Mitchell (Clay), stepson, Curtis Antle, stepdaughter-in-law, Cindy Antle, four grandsons, six granddaughters, two great grandsons and one great granddaughter, and siblings.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and his son Terry, stepsons, Dennis, and Douglas Antle.   

 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 19, 2022, at 1pm at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel, 2405 Woodland Ave., Coffeyville with Pastor Charles Pitts officiating and will be laid to rest next to his wife, Sarah in Fairview Cemetery, military honors will be provided by Fort Riley Funeral Detail, VFW and American Legion Funeral Detail Team will be Pallbearers for their fallen comrade.  Friends are invited to sign the register and pay their respects on Sunday, September 18, 2022, from 3 to 5 pm at Ford-Wulf-Bruns Chapel.  The family has requested memorial contributions be made payable to the VFW Post 1022 and may be left in care of the funeral home.
