Beulah Mae Shields

Beulah Mae Shields, age 93, of Independence, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at the Labette Health hospital in Parsons, Kansas due to complications from Covid-19. 

Beulah was born on April 5, 1928, in Okay, Oklahoma to Ruben Boganey and Dosha Perry.  She attended school in Kansas and worked several different jobs through the years.  She married Olander Shields, to this marriage they had eight children. 

Beulah was a long-time member of the St. James Church.  She served as an usher, she was a member of the choir and she served on the church board.  She attended church whenever she could, she was a daily Bible reader.  Beulah enjoyed shopping and traveling.  What she cherished most was the time spent with her family.  Due to health reasons, Beulah relocated to Independence, Kansas.  She became a dedicated member of the St. John’s Church of Independence where she attended church regularly and made many dear friends. 

Beulah was preceded in death by her father, Ruben Boganey, her mother, Dosha Perry, loving husband, Olander Shields, two daughters, Betty and Connie Shields, a brother, Elijah Watts, granddaughter, Regina McCoy, two grandsons, Eric and Cornelius Maxwell, Jr., two sons-in-law, William “Mike” Britt and James Pouncil, Sr. and a niece, Marsha Watts. 

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children, Ella Mitchell of Newport Virginia, Claudia and Cornelius Maxwell, Sr. of Dayton, Ohio, Cloretha Pouncil of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Arlene Britt of Independence, Kansas, Lester Shields of Lithonia, Georgia and Victor Shields of Des Moines, Iowa, fourteen grandchildren and a host of great and great-great grandchildren, her sister, Australia Jackson of Coffeyville, Kansas, a sister-in-law, Angie Watts of Denver, Colorado along with many extended relatives and friends that love her. 

Following Beulah’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville, Kansas.  No public memorial service is scheduled at this time. A private family service will be held at a later date.
