Sharon Kay Coons

Sharon Kay Coons, age 78, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center.

Sharon was born on January 15, 1943, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Hank and Mary Elizabeth (Roberts) LaForte.  She grew up in Coffeyville where she attended local schools and graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School.

Sharon met and fell in love with Harold Coons.  The couple were married on June 30, 1979, in Coffeyville, Kansas where they made their home.  Sharon stayed busy with several different jobs, including managing KFC for several years, working at K & S part-time and still found time to do her friends’ and family’s hair.  She enjoyed bowling and shooting pool; for years she was active in pool league.

The majority of Sharon and Harold's time was spent at the local V.F.W. Post #1022.  For over 20 years, she worked as club manager of the "V" and volunteered alongside Harold in the V.F.W. Auxiliary for most of those 20 years.  For Sharon it wasn't just a job, it was more of a calling.  Her selfless generosity to those around her was apparent.  The people who spent time at the "V" weren't just patrons of the club, they were people Sharon grew to care about and treat like they were family.  She touched the lives of all the people around her and will be missed by many.

Surviving to cherish her memory is her loving husband of 42 years, Harold Coons of the home, children, Tim Pitts of Tyro, Kansas, Dan Pitts of Coffeyville, Kansas, Michael Coons of Charlotte Michigan, Mark Coons of Coffeyville, Kansas, fifteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, brother, Wilfred "Red" LaForte, sister, Beatrice Cox, numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives and close friends.

Sharon was preceded in death by her parents, Hank and Mary LaForte, son, Eric Pitts, daughter, Mary (Pitts) Thornbrough, brother, Gordon LaForte and two sisters.

Following Sharon's wishes, cremation will take place under the direction of David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville.

There will be a graveside Memorial Services at a later date, with details to be announced.

The family suggests memorial contributions can be made to the local V.F.W. Auxiliary and may be left
