JL was born on June 3, 1933 in rural Parsons, KS to Joe and Opal (Pate) Paul.   JL grew up farming with his father.  He loved to fish and hunt.   His elementary years were spent at Service Valley and his high school years he attended Labette County High School.  After high school JL farmed with his father and worked at the Ammunition Plant in Parsons.    Through a mutual friend JL met the love of his life Jean (Maxson) Paul.   They were married on March 29, 1953.   They had three children Doug Paul, Gregory Paul, and Alesia (Paul) Malone.  In 1956, JL went to work in the oil and refining business at COOP-CVR Energy and retired after more than 40 years of service.

JL loved raising sheep, hogs and horses for his children so they could participate in 4H and FFA. He was an avid gardener and would share his produce with many of the residents of Edna. Every summer, JL would plant 2 acres of sweet corn just to share with the entire community and surrounding areas.   JL loved to travel and was fortunate to take numerous overseas trips and many cruises with Jean.   His favorite being Australia and New Zealand.  Fishing was a passion of JL’s in his later years.   He and Doug went on many guided fishing trips.  One of his favorites was a trip to Canada.   He would get up in the wee hours of the morning if someone wanted to go.     JL was an active member of the Edna United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge in Edna, as well as Edna Saddle Club and the Southeast Kansas Mounted Posse.  Many weekends were spent at parades and shodeos with his children.
