Michael Albin Banta, 90, formerly of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, December 8, 2020 at Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. 

 

Michael was born on September 7, 1930 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Loyd and Jenny (Shufflin) Banta.  After graduating from high school, he went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Geology from Kansas State University. 

 

Michael proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from January 9, 1951 until he received his honorable discharge on August 11, 1954.  He made his home in Coffeyville, Kansas where he was the owner and operator of Coffeyville Mill Supply.

 

On January 1, 1961 he married the love of his life, Joyce L. Smith in South Coffeyville, Oklahoma.  They made their home in Coffeyville where they raised their two boys, Michael and Mark.  She preceded him in death on January 30, 2020. 

 

Michael was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Coffeyville, the American Legion Post #20; he was an active member of the Coffeyville Lion’s Club for fifty one years and served as their District Governor from 1997-1998 and past club President.  He was also a member of the Kansas State University Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

 

Surviving to honor his memory are his sons, Michael S. Banta of Coffeyville, Kansas, Mark A. Banta and wife, Lauren of Centerburg, Ohio; grandchildren, Jacob Banta, Ellen Banta, Olivia Banta, Andrew Banta, Madeline Grace Banta; nephews, John Banta and wife, Sharon of Mansfield, Texas and Lloyd Banta and wife, Sandy of Lyon, Colorado.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Loyd and Jenny Banta; loving wife, Joyce Banta and by his brother, E. S. “Bill” Banta. 

 

Following Michael’s wishes, cremation has taken place.  A public Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
