Vera Mae Miller

Vera Mae Miller,85, of Sedan, Kansas passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2020 at Jane Phillips Medical Center in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

 

She was born on July 20, 1935 at Hominy, Oklahoma to James Joseph “Jim” and Vera Nettie (Miller) Lynn. When she was young Vera Mae’s family moved to the Elgin, Kansas area where she grew up and attended Elgin Grade School and Sedan High School. After graduating from high school she attended St. John School of Nursing in Tulsa, Oklahoma graduating as a Registered Nurse.

 

On August 17, 1957 she married Frank Allen Miller at Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Following their marriage they made their home in Wichita, Coffeyville, Cedar Vale, Wellington, Peru, Sedan, and Udall where her husband was a teacher, and school administrator and Vera as a nurse. For many years Vera was employed at the Winfield State Hospital and Training Center where she worked until retiring. Over the years she was a nurse for Doctors Hayes and Taylor in Cedar Vale and Sedan, was County Health Nurse and School Health Nurse. Her husband preceded her in death on November 27, 2011.

 

Vera was a member of St. Roberts Catholic Church in Sedan, St. Roberts Altar Society, Chautauqua County Historical Society, and V.F.W. Auxiliary. She loved researching genealogy, spending many hours walking cemeteries across the country searching out her ancestors. But her greatest joy was spending time surrounded by her family especially her grandchildren.

 

Survivors include her children, Guy Miller and wife, Becky of Geuda Springs, Kansas, Bill Miller and wife Krista of Mulvane, Kansas, John Miller and wife, Sherry of Sedan, Kansas, Jim Miller and wife, Tosha of Sedan, Kansas, and Mary Reeves and husband, Roger of Sedan, Kansas; one sister Charlene Herard of Bartlesville, Oklahoma; fourteen grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank Miller, and three grandsons, Joshua James McCann, Justin Keith McCann and Earl Joseph Miller.

 

Following Vera Mae’s wished cremation has taken place and inurnment will take place at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery in Sedan.

 

The family suggests memorials to the Chautauqua County Historical and Genealogical Society History House; contributions may left with or mailed in care of the David W. Barnes Funeral Home, 306 North Cline Road, Coffeyville, KS 67337.
