Janet Marie (Jennings) Freel, 69, of Coffeyville, Kansas passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2018 at her home.

 

Janet was born on December 11, 1948 in Coffeyville, Kansas to Jerald and Marie (Benning) Jennings.  Janet grew up in Coffeyville where she graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School.  She earned her Associate Degree in Business from Coffeyville Community College Janet was also a graduate of the Coffeyville Beauty College that was located above the Midland Theatre.

 

In June of 1972 she was united in marriage to Richard “Dick” Freel at the First Baptist Church in Coffeyville.  They had two children, Erica and Richard “Bo” Jr.  In 1987 the couple divorced

 

After college Janet worked as a beautician until having children.  While the kids were growing up all her time was spent taking care of them and the home.  She was an excellent cook and enjoyed trying new foods and recipes.  She would often watch cooking shows and was considered to be a foodie.

 

In 1988 Janet worked as a Clerk for the City of Edna until 1992.  She was the City Manager for Kinsley, Kansas for 3 years.  She was City Clerk for Belle Plain, Kansas for 4 years.  After returning to the area, Janet worked at Watco Railroad in Cherryvale, Twin Valley Utility Billing in Altamont, Kansas for 2 years, Eagles Security for 4 years.  She also did personal taxes for many years.  Most recently she worked at Coffeyville Chiropractic for Dr. Heath Haffner, D.C. as his secretary for the past 8 years.  She worked as recently as last month until her health kept her home.

 

Janet enjoyed playing bingo at Holy Name, visiting casinos and playing crossword scratch-off tickets.  She used to be active in a local women’s bowling league.  She liked to travel and go on car rides, reading and thread crocheting.

 

She is survived by her daughter, Erica Ann Freel of Coffeyville, Kansas; grandchildren, Kayla and Damon Freel of Independence, Kansas; sister, Jerrie Ann Lowrance and husband, Jerry of Coffeyville, Kansas; many nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.  She will be dearly missed by so many people.

 

Preceding her in death are her parents, Jerald T. Jennings, Marie E. Jennings - Metzinger and loving son, Richard “Bo” Freel, Jr.

 

Funeral Services for Janet will be held on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Dearing Christian Church in Dearing, Kansas.  Pastor J.B. Brown will officiate.  Graveside services will immediately follow at the Fairview Veterans Memorial Patio in Coffeyville with private burial in Calvary Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be held on Monday, October 29, 2018 at David W. Barnes Funeral Home in Coffeyville from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  The family will greet friends on Monday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
