The Kansas Jayhawks snapped a 19-year drought Saturday afternoon, taking down the Baylor Bears 25-24 on a last-minute blocked field goal to secure their first Big 12 win of the season and their first victory over Baylor since 2007.
Trailing by 11 to begin the fourth quarter, Kansas chipped away at the deficit, adding nine points before a Baylor field goal briefly extended the Bears’ lead. Quarterback Isaiah Marshall then scampered into the end zone from 15 yards out to give the Jayhawks the lead for good with 1:13 remaining. Head coach Lance Leipold says his team was confident it could get penetration on the kick and was proud of its perseverance.
The Jayhawks improve to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in conference play. They’ll look to get back to .500 next week when they take on the TCU Horned Frogs, who also enter with a 3-4 record. Pregame is scheduled for 1 p.m., with kickoff at 2:30 on Classic Hits 104.1.
The K-State Wildcats fell to Arizona State 28-17, playing without starting quarterback Avery Johnson, who was sidelined with a neck and shoulder injury for Saturday’s contest.
The Wildcats struck first, but the Sun Devils responded with a 28-10 run to close out the game, as Arizona State running back Cordae Mack found the end zone four times. Head coach Collin Klein says struggles on third down and in the running game contributed to the loss.
The Wildcats fall to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in conference play. They’ll be back in action next week against Colorado, with pregame at 11 a.m. and kickoff at 1 p.m. on the Mighty 690.
