While not the premier college basketball tournament in March, the NIT has three area teams that all won their first round games. Wichita State, Tulsa, and Oklahoma State all advanced and will play again on Sunday.
On Tuesday night, Wichita State downed Wyoming 74-70 to move on. Freshman guard TJ Williams scored 17 points in just 18 minutes off the bench.
Their second round opponent will be nearby Oklahoma State, who advanced with an 84-80 win over Davidson. The Cowboys erased a 10-point halftime deficit to stay alive.
Lastly, Tulsa needed overtime to get by Stephen F. Austin, reigning 89-84. Another freshman was the hero there, as Jaylen Lawal led the team with 24 points, eight of which came in overtime.
The Golden Hurricanes will host UNLV on Sunday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU, while Oklahoma State welcomes Wichita State to Stillwater at 8:30 on ESPN2.
Both games are next to each other on the bracket, meaning there is potential for another local matchup in the NIT quarterfinal next week.
