It was a tale of two halfs, but the Caney Valley Bullpups came away with a 48-28 win and a regional championship last night at Caney Memorial Stadium.
Riverton scored on their first play from scrimmage; a 70 yard TD run, but Caney also scored on their first possession; it was 8-7 Caney early in the game. Riverton pulled ahead with another 70 yard touchdown run, and followed that up with a blocked punt in the end zone to make it 21-8 after the 1st quarter. Caney would score in the 2nd quarter, but Riverton would answer, and after a perfectly executed on-side type kick, Riverton recovered and look poised to expland their lead going into halftime. Riverton, however, fumbled the exchange on the 2 yard line; Caney would recover. The Bullpus were down 28-16 at the half.
The 2nd half was a different story for the Bullpups. They scored on their 1st possession of the half, and then would score again on a 5-yard touchdown run by Traxcyn Garton to take their 1st lead of the game in the 3rd quarter. Big runs by Jace Buckley and Boone White would help the Pups extend their lead, but the play that sealed the game came on an 89 yard fumble recovery and score by Angel Martinez late in the 4th quarter.
Caney improves to 9-1 on the season, riding a six game winning streak. They will face a 9-1 Osage City team, who defeated Atchison County last night 60-7. The game is scheduled for Friday night in Caney.
