Right-handed pitcher Seth Lugo will be staying in Kansas City for the long term, signing a two-year extension with the organization.
The deal pays Lugo $20 million a season plus a $3 million signing bonus and includes a vesting option for a third season.
Lugo finished second in AL Cy Young voting last season and has been sharp again in 2025, with a 2.95 ERA in 113 innings. He was expected to enter free agency after the season, but expressed a desire to stay with the Royals organization.
The 35-year old will be tasked with leading a rotation that has been decimated with injuries, with left-handers Cole Ragans and Kris Bubic out long-term, and Michael Lorenzen and Daniel Lynch also on the injured list.
Lugo has one of the most versatile pitch mixes in the sport, throwing two types of fastballs, three sliders, two curveballs, a changeup, splitter, and cutter. He will start for Kansas City tonight when they face the Atlanta Braves.
