A new look offense was on display in Humboldt in the Caney Bullpups 28-12 loss to the Cubs.
While the Pups showed the running attack fans are accustomed to, with an 81-yard touchdown run by Traxcyn Garton in the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter and am 82-yard TD by Logan Burnett later in the half, the offense was run efficiently by freshman QB Layne Denny, with several mid to long range passes mixed in with the running game. Freshmen running back Boone White also had good runs and several first downs for the Pups.
Humboldt's senior leadership was on display, as senior QB Blake Ellis rushed for two touchdowns in the victory. The defense also scored in the second quarter, with a 58-yard scoop and score off a Bullpup fumble. Seniors Mason Sterling and Cole Mathes scored key first downs to keep drives alive for the Cubs.
Caney falls to 0-1 on the season. They will take on Erie a week from tonight in their home opener.
