Former Arkansas Quarterback Dies in Drowning

A former Arkansas star quarterback and NFL veteran has died following an apparent drowning.

Ryan Mallett played two seasons for the Arkansas Razorbacks in both 2009 and 2010, becoming one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in school history. He finished his career with 7.493 passing yards and 62 touchdown passes in less than 30 career starts.

Mallett was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Legendary NFL coach Bill Belichick called Mallett "a winner everywhere he's been" as well as an "impressive guy to talk to."

Following seven NFL seasons, Mallett went to the coaching side of football, serving as the head coach at White Hall High School in his home state of Arkansas.

Mallett finished seventh in the Heisman Trophy voting in 2010. He was 35 years old.
