Three Wichita State Alum to be Inducted to Kansas Sports Hall of Fame

A trio of Wichita State athletes were named to the 2023 class of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame.

Lynbert Johnson, Sara Lungren Walkup, and Brent Kemnitz all were announced to the annual Hall of Fame class last week.

Johnson had a prestigious career on the Shockers basketball team, scoring over 1900 points and a Top 5 scorer in school history. He was three-time all-conference and an honorable mention for the All-American honor in 1979. Johnson was inducted into the Wichita State Sports Hall of Fame in 1986.

Walkup was a dominant outside hitter for the Shocker volleyball program. She was Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in both her junior and senior seasons, and was an honorable mention All-American in her senior year in 2007.

She now serves as the head coach at Cheney High School, in her 11th season, and has taken the program to a pair of Class 3A runner-ups.

Kemnitz still serves with the Shockers as the assistant athletic director, but his legacy lies on the baseball field. He spent 38 seasons as the pitching coach of Shocker baseball, and helped the program reach seven College World Series appearaces, including a national championship in 1989.

The three alumni, along with the rest of the Class of 2023, will be inducted on October 1st.
