Preview: Bullpups battle Council Grove in playoffs

The Caney Valley Bullpups continue their quest for a 2A state football championship, with a game Thursday night against Council Grove. Both teams enter this matchup with a 7-2 record on the season.

Caney enters fresh off of a 44-16 win over the Eureka Tornados in the opening round of the postseason, while Council Grove had no problems with Fredonia, winning 48-8 over the Yellow Jackets.

The Bullpups, all season long, have showcased a ground and pound style of offense, designed by coach Criss Davis, and primarly executed by the two-headed monster of Jackson Griffin and Aston King. The two star running backs have combined for 300+ rushing yards in six different games this season, including last week against Eureka.

On the defensive side of the ball, Ben Matthews has become a massive presence off the edge for Caney, rushing the quarterback and sealing off the edge, not allowing running backs and receivers to get to the sideline. Another key piece of the Bullpups defense is Drake Stapleton, a senior who plays a large role in making sure each member of the defense is in the correct spot.

The Council Grove Braves offer talented players at both quarterback and running back, according to Davis. The defense is also stout, only giving up more than 16 points twice this season.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night, with pregame at 6:15. You can catch the Bullpups this week with the voice of Caney, Chris Freund, on the mighty 690 KGGF AM.
