Cherryvale controls Neodesha in Week 8 GOTW

Few things feel better than entering the postseason playing your best football of the season, and that's exactly the case for the Cherryvale Chargers, after shutting out rival Neodesha 38-0 on senior night.

The defense was tested early, with Neodesha having four first-quarter possessions starting across the 50 yard line, courtesy of a pair of onside kicks, an interception, and a 4th-down stand. But the Charger defensive line created penetration in the backfield all night, and completely neutralized the option offense of Neodesha.

The star of the night for the Chargers was junior utility player Stetson Schafer, who lined up as a receiver, tight end, linebacker, safety, and punter throughout the night. Schafer finished with a pair of interceptions, a long 68 yard TD catch, and outstanding athletic displays all evening long.

The Chargers run game also showed up in a big way, led by senior Trevin Elam. As the night went on, Elam continuously found ways to fall forward and drive his legs, turning plays that appeared to have no hope into consistent six and seven yard gains.

Neodesha's season comes to an end after failing to qualify for postseason play, while the Cherryvale Chargers earn the 2-seed in the District 1 portion of the bracket, and will host the Humboldt Cubs in the first round of the playoffs on Friday night. Humboldt defeated Cherryvale 46-0 in the two teams' earlier matchup this season.
