Bluestreaks Spoil Yellowjacket's Homecoming In Crazy Final

The Neodesha Blue Streaks traveled to their in-county rival Fredonia looking to ruin the Yellowjacket's homecoming celebrations. The boys in blue jumped out to an early lead and stayed in control for most of the game. Once again, in a hole early, Fredonia was forced to be a passing team, and while their tandem of Joel Dutton and Jadin Archeval amassed over a hundred yards in passing/receiving, and Neodesha was able to disrupt the Fredonia offense at times, what hurt the Yellowjackets the most was themselves with inopportune penalties and turnovers. They also were unable to convert on 3 and 4th down, turning the ball over on downs at least 4 times.

But the end of the game left everyone on both sides of the ball shaking their heads in disbelief. With about 4 minutes left in the game, Fredonia had scored and pulled to within 2 at 20-22. Neodesha put together their best drive of the night mixing the run and the pass and ate up the clock, so much so that when they scored their final touchdown they only left :48 seconds for Fredonia to come up with 10 points. Neodesha squib kicked the ball hoping to eat up a little more time but, Joel Dutton of the Yellowjackets showed why he is the captain of the team as he reversed direction on the return and broke at least three tackles on his way to a touchdown to bring the score to 26-30 with the failed 2 point conversion. So with 32 seconds, Fredonia attempted the on-side kick and Neodesha was able to cover it up.

Now all Neodesha had to do was snap the ball twice in the victory formation and the clock would expire and they would win. The first snap was fine, a knee was taken and the team came back to the line this time, now, was it the cold rain that had started to fall that might have made the ball slippery or just nerves, but the QB center exchange was botched and the ball rolled down the line of scrimmage and a Fredonia lineman scoped it up. Fredonia unbelievably had its shot to win the game and steal one from the Blustreaks, but Dutton dropped back and threw a ball that was as high as it was long toward the end zone and it fell right into the hands of a Neodesha player to end the game.

The Bluesteaks roller coaster emotional ride was over and the visitors celebrated on their cross-county rival’s field, much to the agony of the home team who knew they could have had a much different outcome to the game. Fredonia is a young team and there were many lessons for both teams that they can build on this week. The #1 lesson had to be: never ever give up.
