Gonzales Game-Winner Leads Coffeyville Over Butler

Late-game heroics lifted the Coffeyville Red Ravens over Butler, 9-8, Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday's game was a rare single, 9-inning contest. The Grizzlies scored the game's first 3 runs, coming after a 2-RBI homerun and an RBI groundout. The Ravens fought back, tying the game at 3-3, but were forced to make another comeback after Butler plated another 3 runs in the top of the 5th. Luckily, Coffeyville was covered. After scoring a run in the bottom half of the inning, bringing the game back to within 2 runs, shortstop Orlando Gonzalez took Butler reliever Denton Whiteside deep to left to tie the ballgame back up. Later in the inning, first baseman Jackson Mannix found himself an RBI single to give Coffeyville its first lead of the game at 7-6, a lead they'd hold till near the end of the ballgame.

The Red Ravens had a chance to close the game in the top of the ninth, leading the Grizzlies 8-7. Coffeyville came as close as to take Butler to its final strike, but clutch hitting from the bottom of the lineup tied the ballgame up at 8. Fortunately, the Ravens came on strong in the bottom half, getting pinch runner Kolby Adams on base and bringing him around to 3rd. Designated hitter Austin Gonzales then chose that opportunity to come through with his first hit of the game.

Coffeyville improves to 18-15 on the season, 10-11 in Jayhawk Conference play. They'll next take on Allen County, traveling to Iola on Thursday for a doubleheader.
