Ravens Split Home Doubleheader With KCK

Coffeyville split its home doubleheader with Kansas City Kansas on Saturday, taking the first contest 2-1 but dropping the second 16-4.

The first game featured yet another great pitching performance from Ravens starter Christopher Spry, just a week removed from a 7-inning, 2-run performance against Cowley. With his pitch count low, and facing only 26 batters, Spry was able to go the distance once again. He pitched the full 7 innings and allowed just 1 run to cross in the top of the 5th.

Meanwhile, the offense was able to get just enough going for themselves to pass the Blue Devils by. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom half of the 5th, right fielder Jack Bell ripped a line drive into right field that allowed AJ Craft to score from third base. The very next inning, Coffeyville pulled off a risky double steal, with Jackson Mannix drawing enough attention for pinch runner Kolby Adams to make a mad dash for home. He'd slide just underneath the tag, giving the Red Ravens a lead that would prove decisive after a scoreless top of the 7th. Spry was the winning pitcher, improving his record to 1-1 on the season. The loss was KCK's first of the Jayhawk Conference season.

The second game looked good for Coffeyville, at first. The Ravens shook KCK starter Eli Tormes, putting 3 runs across in the bottom of the 1st. The fun mostly stopped there, though. The Blue Devils slowly ramped up their own offensive efforts, scoring 1 in the 2nd, 2 more in the 3rd, and finally, 3 in the 5th to take a 6-3 lead. Coffeyville briefly brought it back to within 2 after another RBI single for Jack Bell, but KCK poured on 10 more runs in the game's final 2 innings to bring the game to a anticlimatic conclusion. Coffeyville starter Marcos Lopez took the loss for the Ravens, dropping his season record to 2-1.

The Red Ravens are now 14-14 this season. They'll return to Walter Johnson Park for a weekday showdown with Labette Community College. You can catch the broadcast at 1:00PM, on Sonshine 98.9, KQQF.
